Suarez hadn't been especially good from 2020-21. That he bounced back in Seattle this year was pretty surprising really. It looked like he was kind of done
Done as a middle-of-the-order presence, I should clarify. Not that he was about to wash out of the league
5:27
But nobody was taking on the last three years of his deal without incentive. That had to be Winker for Seattle to bite on Suarez

How likely is it that we see some Reds reunions? Reds have lots of holes and ex-Reds Tucker Barnhart, Adam Duvall, and Aroldis Chapman likely to be affordable free agents.
Anthony Franco
5:28
Duvall makes sense, could see that. They need a backup catcher but I wonder if Barnhart targets somewhere with a clearer path to possible #1 reps
Take a flier on Chapman with an eye towards flipping him midseason? Guess I could see that -- they definitely need lefty bullpen help -- but they'll have to be certain he's a clubhouse fit

What does the rotation look like in ‘23? Sign another washed up veteran or go with 5 kids?
Anthony Franco
5:29
Lodolo/Greene are locks. I expect Ashcraft to be in there too. Probably add two starters from the outside
5:30
Brandon Williamson and Justin Dunn could pitch their way into the mix at some point, but they didn't play well enough this year to get handed a spot
Free agency has a bunch of depth types. Someone suggested Trevor Williams in here (lost the question, apologies) and I like that fit. Chad Kuhl, Kyle Gibson, Michael Pineda would be cheap
5:31
I like the idea of someone with a rotation need giving Matt Strahm another shot as a starter, Cincinnati could try that
Terry
5:31
How many people are in this chat compared to the others?
Anthony Franco
5:31
Of the ones I've done, this is the busiest
5:32
Little more than the Cardinals, quite a bit more active than Arizona/Colorado
Prospect appreciator
5:32
Does Vladimir Gutierrez fit in this team and could a job in the pen suit him better than starting
Anthony Franco
5:33
He might miss all of next year rehabbing from Tommy John and didn't show a whole lot in his MLB time before that. Not convinced he holds a roster spot the whole time

Best guess at the starting 8 as it stands now?
Anthony Franco
5:35
Stephenson, Votto, India, Steer, stopgap SS (Barrero back to Louisville, Farmer traded -- José Iglesias maybe?), Fraley, Senzel, Wil Myers-type FA

5:36
David Bell first manager fired? Who replaces him?
Anthony Franco
5:36
Feels like a question my brother would not actually ask, hmm
5:37
Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if Bell gets removed at some point during the season. He's not working with much but things are going to be rough and he's been around awhile. It's usually not a great combination for a manager
Bill Ponderosa
5:37
Any chance the reds sell high on Diaz? What would they want in return?
Anthony Franco
5:38
I think they'll listen, since rebuilding teams shouldn't make any reliever firmly off limits. But I'd be surprised if he goes, we usually don't see that kind of move actually coming through
5:39
Pirates haven't traded Bednar, Rangers didn't trade Leclerc at the peak of his value

5:39
Would you see trading some of our  good minor league pitching prospects for Trevor Rogers since he has 4 years of control coming off a down year?
Anthony Franco
5:40
Out of the box idea, I like it. Doubt it's something Miami has a ton of interest in though
If they deal Rogers, it's probably for immediate MLB offensive help, which the Reds can't really provide

Could Matt McClain be good?
Anthony Franco
5:42
I think he'll be solid, yeah. Doubt there's enough power to be an impact offensive player but he feels at least like a high-end utility type to me

CES by the all star break at hot corner or DH?
Anthony Franco
5:43
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, one of the players back from the Twins in the Mahle deal
All-Star Break feels a little early. Think he gets a bit longer than that in Louisville but I do expect him up in the second half at some point
Over/Under
5:44
Reds' win total in '23 (regular season, not playoffs haha): 68.5
Anthony Franco
5:44
A bit over, I'd probably peg them at like 71
5:45
They're not going to be good but they also had a bunch of rough injury luck that made this year's 62 wins a lower-end outcome, even with the midseason trades

5:45
Legitimate candidates for FA signings:  Myers level or Duval level?
Anthony Franco
5:46
Is there a difference?
Adam
5:46
Stephenson and India need extended right?
Anthony Franco
5:47
Yeah they could kick something like this around. The long-term books are clear so they can pick a few targets for an early-career deal
5:48
Both those guys are coming off up-and-down years (Stephenson because of injuries, India because of performance), so maybe they don't feel like it's a great time to talk contract, but it doesn't hurt to engage them in those conversations
