Hi all! Welcome to our Reach for Excellence Summer School Webchat. This is your opportunity to ask any questions you have about the residential. No question is silly and what you ask might help other people who are attending, so don’t be shy! We’ve got 4 members of the Contextual Outreach Team here today ready to answer all of your questions. Remember that any general questions not related to Summer School should be directed towards the RfE inbox at reachforexcellence@leeds.ac.uk, but bear in mind it may take us a while longer than normal to get back to you as we are now in the final stages of planning this event!
3:52
The webchat will begin at 4pm - questions that you post to us don't immediately appear in view to the public as they enter our moderation queue - once you have hit submit there is no need to post again
3:55
Its also a first time welcome to our Parent/Carer community today. We use this platform throughout the year to host online chats but wanted to extend the invitation to all for todays session!
4:00
It is now 4pm and the chat is open! The full residential management team are with you today - so you are welcome to ask us your questions!

What should we bring?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:03
Hi Bahar, hope you're doing well and are excited for the summer school! Have you received the handbook yet? :)
4:06
If not, here you go: ·        All bedding will be provided, so it is not necessary to bring any.
·        Towels will be provided.
·        Remember to bring all the toiletries you will need for the week (toothbrush, toothpaste etc.)
  • Bring comfortable clothes for attending classes
  • Comfortable shoes / trainers
  • A waterproof jacket – we will be doing activities outdoors regardless of rain
  • A warm jumper – it can get cold in the evening
  • Something smart-casual to wear for the Formal Dinner: a chance to dress up!
·        Suitable shoes for outdoor activities.
  • Students that have opted to take part in Leeds Activity Centre or Clip ’n Climb as part of our Give it a Go afternoon need to bring clothes suitable for the weather and sensible shoes. Please bring waterproof clot

Hi can you please tell me what arrangements we need to make for students food? 😊
AvatarJennifer Mchale
4:04
Students dont need to bring any food with them as all meals are catered by us. Each meal will include vegetarian and Halal food options, as well as taking into account students with special dietary requirements. If you haven’t already let us know, or if there have been any changes to your dietary/special requirements or medical conditions we should be made aware of, please email us at reachforexcellence@leeds.ac.uk ASAP

Does the booklet that's being sent out give details and instructions for drop off and pick up time and destination ?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:06
Directions/information about transport and reaching us at Henry Price were included in the transport forms that students returned with their activity choices :)

On arrival day I need to drop Sadie off earlier than 10am as I need to be in Ilkley by 10am - I’ve looked at the drop off point and there doesn’t seem anything on the doorstep. Will she be able to get access at all to somewhere in the building?
AvatarJennifer Mchale
4:07
You can bring Sadie to Henry Price Halls from 9am if that helps and staff will be avaliable to welcome her.

Hi, what time will students be available to be picked up by parents on the final day of the summer school on the Friday?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:09
Hi! The summer school ends between 2.30pm and 3pm. Students who have booked the train station shuttle will be taken back to Leeds Station and those who have opted to make their own way home will be signed out at this point.

Hello! When will the afternoon events typically end?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:12
Hi Lara the afternoon sessions will end between 4-5pm, where you then have some free time in your flat before the evening meal and activities :)

I am really looking forward to the summer school. I received my handbook yesterday and its very clear! Also thank you for last weeks information evening on campus that ran through the full week and everything it entails. My mum found it very useful but obviously I was aware of the full weeks plans as you went though it all before we applied :)

Hi John, we're glad to hear how useful you found the information session! Great to hear you received the handbook too!

Could you please let us know a rough outline of the day (I.e. structured/unstructured time/meal and break time)?
AvatarJennifer Mchale
4:17
Hi Tracey, Sadie should have received a Summer School programme in your Parent/Carer & Participant Handbook which was sent home in the first class post.  If its not arrived it should do in the next couple of days.   No two days at the summer school are the same, but every day is very busy with lots going on and many opportunities for students. The daytime activities are supplemented by a full and varied evening social programme, all of which is provided free of charge.  Meal times are usually at the same time each day and there are breaks factored in to the day time too if this helps.

Hello! If we haven’t received the handbook yet, when should we expect to receive it?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:17
Hi Juwariyah, we posted the handbook first class yesterday, so you should receive this tomorrow hopefully!
AvatarJames Leslie
4:19
the handbooks were sent to the addresses that you included in your summer school application forms (not your original RfE applications) so if you have moved - please drop us an email. as it went 1st Class - these should have been received in todays post

Thank you Jennifer - yes we look forward to receiving the booklet! 😊

Great there is lots of info in there for you both to digest, the individual programmes for students will be given out when they come on the first day so Sadie will see where she will be for the week.

Are we all going to see Grease the musical, or is this an optional event?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:21
We will all be going to enjoy the show :) this is one of the most favoured evening activities of the residential as this isn't an opportunity that many get to experience!

Could you explain what the showcase entails? Is there anything we need to bring for it?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:29
I can indeed! You don't need to bring anything for it :) Basically we want to know what you have learnt from taking part in RfE and the summer school week. So during the week you work in small groups marked "Showcase Planning" on the timetable to put together a 5 minute presentation for the end of the week "The RfE Showcase" on the timetable. As a student you have to present to an audience every day at University so this is really good practice but that doesn't mean everybody will need to speak. You will work with your team to decide who does what. Perhaps if your creative for example you will design a poster and others in your group who are more vocal will take a lead at the presenting aspect. Its nothing to worry about though we go through this with students and ambassadors are here to help! Every year student's tell us how much they get out of this element of the programme and that's why its included

how many people per flat will there be?
AvatarMeghan Clamp
4:26
The flats have a communal kitchen and living area, and there will be no more than 7 students sharing a flat with 1 or 2 student ambassadors.
Tracey McPhee
4:26
Is the evening programme also covered in the handbook?
AvatarJennifer Mchale
4:27
It is Tracey yes, all of the activities are shown including the theatre trip and info on the bowling trip etc.
4:32
I'm sorry you couldn't make it to the parent info evening last week information on the activities was given then but I hope the info that's in the handbook gives you some insight too.

What time do we need to arrive at the train station by if we are going to be collected?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:29
You need to be standing on the concourse no later than 10am or the last shuttle will leave without you. We will be at the station from 9am picking people up. Our staff will have a huge "Reach for Excellence" banner so you wont miss us!
