what sort of things do universities look for on applications that would make us stand out besides doing an EPQ?
AvatarJames Leslie

Hobbies/ Clubs/Societies/ Positions of Responsibility/ Sports / Extra Curricular Activities (Reach for Excellence ABSOLUTLEY)

How much enrichment should you be doing to include in your personal statement?
AvatarMolly
4:38
No hard and fast rule - it's more about how you talk about your experiences that counts! We don't just want a big checklist of stuff, we want to know how you've engaged with each thing and what you've learned from it - talking about one thing well is better than talking about 3 things in brief.

Is there a place where we can see all of our attendance so far on the reach for excellence scheme?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:38
All the events you have attended will be in the Reflective Learning Log :)

Would mentoring younger years in your school look good on a personal statement?
AvatarMolly
4:38
yes!

What will be different in the events in easter with regards to Ramadan?
AvatarMolly
4:41
There is a section on this in our arrival guide - it's attached to each event

is it going to be harder getting a place on a curse due to backlog because of covid?
AvatarMolly
4:42
Massively depends on the course and the univeristy - at Leeds there are more limited places on Law and some Business courses, but the vast majority are unaffected

What would you say most differentiates A and A* students?
AvatarMolly
4:45
I'm honestly not sure as I haven't ever had to mark an exam at sixth form. At university I was once told that for my course the difference between a 'first class' degree and a 2:1 was originality of thought - ie not simply repeating information you'd heard elsewhere, but actually coming up with your own ideas. But this is so unique to each subject so can't really be considered a hard and fast rule!

In terms of the libraries at University of Leeds, do all students have access to every library and do you have an ID which you have to use?
AvatarMolly
4:46
Yep, you get a student card that acts as your ID, and you use this to access the libraries and take books out
Shaiza Mehmood
4:46
Is university a lot of independent work?
AvatarMolly
4:48
Depends on the course - for arts and humanities stuff then yes definitely, for stem and healthcare stuff there is more class time. I would still say that there is overall more of a focus on independent learning than there is in school/college
Shaiza Mehmood
4:48
When you are given materials and resources to read, do you have to buy them or do the universities have them to borrow?
AvatarMolly
4:49
Mostly you can borrow them, but there may be some materials you are advised to buy. You can always get these second hand though and I would defo recommend looking for second hand rather than buying new!
Aliza
4:49
When applying to university can you apply for the same one multiple times but with different courses?
AvatarMolly
4:50
You can, but we'd always recommend spreading out a bit more. We'll cover this in more detail at get set for uni!
Simran
4:51
Is university just lectures or is there different ways to teaching?
AvatarMolly
4:51
There are a few different teaching styles - lectures, seminars (small groups, more discussion based), lab work, field work (for geography/environment courses mainly)
Robert
4:52
How difficult is it to tailor a personal statement to more than one course?
AvatarMolly
4:53
Quite hard - if the subjects are similar it's easier but if they're wildly different then it can be really challenging, as it comes across as though you aren't properly interested in either one. We cover this more in GSFU
Shaiza Mehmood
4:53
Do you have to go to university everyday or are there some days off with no lessons
AvatarMolly
4:54
Massively different depending on the course! I was typically about 6 hours a week across two or three days, but some courses are 9-5 Monday-Friday
umayyah
4:54
is it bad to apply to two courses at the same uni?
AvatarMolly
4:55
No not at all, as long as they're similar and you can tailor your application to both! I applied to both English Lit and English with Theatre Studies at Leeds
Simran
4:55
What is a typical lecture like?
AvatarMolly
4:56
Typically 1hr, with someone standing at the front explaining a particular concept or interpretation. Not much room for discussion, but they sometimes take questions at the end

Can you apply to as many universities as you want or is there a limit?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:55
you have 5 choices on UCAS :)
Shaiza Mehmood
4:56
When does this finish?
AvatarMolly
4:56
4 mins!
AvatarMolly
4:57
Last questions if you have them! 3 mins to go :)
