For Singer, the plan should maybe just be "keep doing what you're doing."

For improving the rotation in general, first and foremost, get a new pitching coach in place.  That Athletic piece on the Royals' pitching development issues kind of underlined some more glaring problems in their organization, so one might imagine some personnel changes in that regard as well.  (I'd be more sure about such changes if Picollo wasn't a long-time employee himself.)
8:46
KC will look to get one or two veteran starters into the rotation to eat innings and provide some stability, and lessen the pressure on Lynch/Bubic/Kowar to produce immediately.

Royals are ranked one of MLB's lowest in salary, farm system and wins - where do the Royals start to improve?
Mark P
8:47
To be fair, the low farm system rank is because the Royals have graduated basically all of their top prospects from the last couple of years to MLB by now.

What are the odds of the royals signing mike clevinger to a 1 yr deal?
Mark P
8:48
Clevinger makes a lot of sense for KC.  Looking for a prove-it deal on a one-year contract, he gets to pitch in a pitchers' park and in a weaker division.  Plus, he's familiar with the AL Central from his days in Cleveland, and there might even be some further ties thanks to John Sherman

kc owners are too loyal and should’ve cleaned house after firing Dayton. Bring in a young exec from Houston. Look at Baltimore and Milwaukee success under Elias and Stearns
Mark P
8:50
They brought in a manager from Tampa, does that help?

Also, adding to my theory earlier about the PBO position....it wasn't any secret that Click and Astros ownership weren't seeing eye to eye.  Now that Click is free and clear, nothing is really stopping the Royals from hiring him as their president of baseball ops, and KC even has a familiar face from the Rays (Click's former team prior to Houston) already in the manager's office

Will Michael A Taylor be in centerfield on opening day for Kansas City?
Mark P
8:51
My guess is no, it'll be Drew Waters.  Taylor will be dealt.

If the Royals can't afford to pay Mondesi $3MM, then maybe this team should be under consideration for a relocation. What's his trade value? Seems some team would take a shot at home, as opposed to a straight non-tender.
Mark P
8:52
It's not really "can't afford," since $3MM isn't a huge sum even for a cost-conscious team like Kansas City.

But it might be a pretty big sum for a player who might not be able to play more than a handful of games in 2023.  ACL recovery is no small feat, and Mondesi's injury history might make his road back longer than usual.

Is it possible the Royals mistakenly passed on Rutschman because they had Perez?  Witt has talent and should improve, but I question how much his bat will improve with his strike zone judgment. Not even a one win player and only 30 walks in a full season.
Mark P
8:54
Rutschman went first overall, Witt went second.  The Royals didn't get a chance to pass on anyone.

Did I miss dodgers team chat?
Mark P

Nope.  It's coming soon!

Do you think Maikel Garcia is good enough to be the Second Basemen within the next 2 years?
Mark P
8:56
His speed and defense alone make him an interesting player, and if he can even be a good average/OBP type of hitting at the MLB level, look out.

Garcia shouldn't be ruled out as a shortstop of the future, let alone second base.  Depends on how Witt acclimates to the position.
8:57
Pause for a moment, I'm going to fire up a quick post about Jesse Chavez
9:01
To be clear, Chavez signed with Atlanta, he didn't make his return to KC
Bingo
9:02
Do you see the Red Sox lining up as trade partners for one of their younger outfielders or Barlow?
Mark P
9:02
Barlow, yes.  One of the young outfielders, maybe Olivares or Isbel, but not Waters or Melendez
D Hauser
9:03
Why is everyone down on Witt? I am writing last season off as a learning experience, thinking he felt pressure to make the team better. Kid will be a stud, agree?
Mark P
9:04
Agree.  Witt had a perfectly decent season for a 21-22 year old making his MLB debut.  Fans are spoiled by the Julio Rodriguez/Rutschman types of rookie breakouts, since most first-year players tend to struggle
Frank
9:05
Expanded role for Slugger? (Royals mascot....)
Mark P
9:06
Just so I'm clear.....Slugger has crown-shaped hair, right?  He doesn't have an adamantium crown built into his skull like some kind of low-rent X-Men character, right?
Ryan

What do you think about a package of Pratto, Taylor, and more (if needed) for young pitching from Miami?
Mark P
9:08
The Marlins are only trading a premium arm for a real hitting upgrade, not a question mark like Pratto or an all-glove player like Taylor.

Not to say that Taylor might be on the radar for Miami if they add bats at other positions, since Taylor is a great defender.  But the Fish are also in the same, uh, boat as the Royals as a team looking for some hitting.
(And, in a broader sense, as teams still waiting to see what they have with prospects that haven't yet panned out.)

9:09
Is Drew Waters assumed to be starting or will he have to earn it in spring training
Mark P
9:09
If not a starter in ink, I would surely think Waters is the favorite to be an everyday player, given how well he performed after the trade to KC.
Keller
9:10
Does Keller get traded?
Mark P
9:11
My guess is yes, another team will swing a deal for him prior to the non-tender deadline.

In fact, I wouldn't even be shocked if KC tenders him a deal but trades him after the fact, if a better rotation option emerges
Mvp
9:11
Is Nelson cruz an option ?
Mark P
9:12
My guess is no.  If you have a DH-only player, you're sealing up a position on a team that has a lot of younger guys who need at-bats
Aj pollock
9:12
Is pollock a good option for the talked about veteran hitter they want to add?

Mark P
9:13
On paper, but again, here's another player coming off a mediocre 2022 season.  The Royals might have faith in a bounce-back, but it's a risk.
Thor
9:15
Is signing thor possible?
Mark P
9:16
Syndergaard has some of the same logic as Clevinger, though 2022 was already Thor's one-year prove-it contract.  And....he only kinda sort of proved it.

I could see a scenario where he inks a multi-year deal but with an opt-out clause, so he'd have leverage if he suddenly returned to his old form in 2023.  The Royals might be game for such a deal.
