Are you surprised the Royals didn’t go outside the org for a new GM?
Mark P
9:19
I was a little surprised they fired Moore at all, but it looks like ownership wanted more immediate results.  Replacing Moore with a longtime internal exec was an interesting choice in that regard, since while obviously Picollo and Moore might differ greatly in their approaches, it can't be viewed as entirely fresh start, or an entire change from how the Royals have done business

With where KC is do you see any reason to potentially deal away Sal Perez with the amount of teams looking for a starting catcher?
Mark P
9:21
Highly doubtful.  I guess if Moore can go, another longtime organizational staple like Perez could possibly be moved as well.  But, Perez is seen as such a leader and cornerstone, plus he signed his extension with Sherman's blessing

Are we shooting to be competitive this year
Mark P
9:22
Not really.  Seems like the plan is another evaluation year, to see if the changes in the FO and at manager can better help reveal what the Royals have

Joey Gallo to the Royals?
Mark P
9:24
As a pure bounce-back option, maybe.  Not that Gallo might exactly be swimming in offers this winter, but you'd think he would want to go to a more homer-friendly ballpark

Mark P to the Royals as 2nd baseman?
Mark P
9:26
Second base was indeed my preferred position on the diamond.  But, as a teenager, I was once cut by a house league baseball team.....so I'm not exactly Joe Morgan out there.

Is Longoria or mccutchen a better fit for the veteran right handed bat?
Mark P
9:28
Longoria has said he isn't playing anywhere except San Francisco, Tampa, or Arizona.  And McCutchen as a veteran leader would be fun, but he would surely prefer to sign with a team that has a better chance of contending

Oh come on Mark! You’re better than that. I’m disappointed in you that you got cut.
Mark P

In fairness, it was more due to an unusual league set-up that year than a pure lack of talent on my part.  But still....I'm no Charlie Gehringer.

Which young team that underwhelmed this season do you think is in the better position right now between the royals and marlins?
Mark P
9:30
I'd say KC, just because their division is thin enough that I wouldn't be utterly shocked if the Royals were competitive in 2023.  For the Marlins, a lot more has to happen for them to leapfrog any of the Mets, Braves, or Phillies
Tyler Gentry
9:31
So, do I earn a starting role out of spring training? Good enough to become a long-term piece as we return to contending status? How do you see my upside?
Mark P
9:32
Gentry has looked great thus far, but he has yet to reach Triple-A.  Making the Opening Day roster is a reach but he has made himself into an interesting prospect, and yet another player to consider going forward

Sad the Pine Tar name hasn’t helped get a question in.

I don't want to risk an enraged George Brett coming after me.

The question I'm going to ask is-what would Mondesi be capable of if he could stay healthy.  The question I'm not really sure I want the answer to is what you think the chances are that the Royals will be competitive before Witt, Melendez, et al. start getting dealt away...and stay competitive.
Mark P

My issue with Mondesi is that he's already been part of seven MLB seasons.  He turns 28 in July.  Dayton Moore was already describing him as a non-everyday player (albeit maybe more in kind of a supersub fashion) even before the ACL tear.

Due to all these injuries, it's simply hard to tell even what Mondesi "could" be since he's barely played.  He has shown flashes, but even fewer flashes than another oft-injured player like Byron Buxton did.  At least when Buxton was able to play, you could see the five-tool ability there, and you can understand why the Twins would ultimately want to extend him.
