Monday chatters! Two weeks of games left for those in full-season leagues; playoffs for others. Y'all still showing up with tons of questions in the queue; feel free to add as we go. I'll try to get to them all.
Fun times ... let's go!
Bob
12:00
Which two would you keep from among Elly De La Cruz, Kyle Tucker, Jarren Duran and Paul Skenes?
Brent Hershey
12:00
Gonna make a guess that this is a keeper league question ... good reminder that when prepping a question, SOME context helps. Void of that, I'm going Elly and Tucker for 2025 ... but it's not an easy choice. Duran a clear #4 here, though.

Question regarding Mitch Keller and Tanner Houck.  Overall they have pitched decently, but do think either of them can take it to another level these next few years?
Brent Hershey
12:02
Would have more hope for Houck than Keller, in large part because of age/experience. We have seen flashes for both, but Houck's ceiling seems higher even though Keller's next step COULD be closer.

Brent, thank you so much for these chats.  So much to learn.  Love them!!  Today's the last day to pick up players we can potentially keep next year, as regulars or minor leaguers.  16 Team 5x5.  Looking for a list of high upside prospects who have been called up (currently active on a major league roster) but will likely be minor league eligible next year.  Looking for you to dig deep for a couple guys that are going to be studs that are under the radar.
Brent Hershey
12:08
Thanks ... tough question, b/c it's a very specific request, so not sure how deep we're digging here b/c these could all be rostered already (and the 'stud' qualifier). But Mayo, Lowder,  Jace Jung, Cantillo, L. Acuña, Dana are possibilities. More or less in that order.

I know some of Bobby Miller's struggles have been injury related, but how do you value him in a dynasty league?
Brent Hershey
12:12
From early chatter and trying to anticipate the offseason, my call is that Miller is going to be a polarizing figure when drafts get going next year. Overhyped this year (I fell for it), but eye-test can wow you. Others say his FB velo-over-shape props him up too high and are ALL the LAD SP injuries coincidental? I think I'll be below the market in redraft, and not value him as highly in a dynasty context as i was coming into 2024. Would not sell off necessarily ... but keep expectations in check.

12:14
Brent, thanks again for these chats.  You helped get me to the playoffs.  H2H points where wins are a priority.  Need 3 from a mix of iffy 2-start guys and 1-start guys with good matchups:  Woo(2), Boyd(2), A. Suarez(2), Schwellenbach, C. Schmidt.  Thanks,
Brent Hershey
12:14
Yes, congrats on the playoff run! Woo, Boyd, Schwellenbach. Best of luck!

12:23
Great work this season! In playoffs in 12-tm, H2H, but pitching shaky! For this and next week, is it worth dropping Heaney (9/22 vs SEA, after 3 ER/7 H/3 K5 IP vs SEA Sun.), Reese Olson (off IL today), G Williams or Peralta (not looking @ ‘25) — to grab Kremer (9/18 vs. SF), Cantillo (9/19 vs MIN), Canning (9/17 vs CHW) or Festa (9/20 @BOS) off waiver wire? Reasoning welcomed! Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:23
Let's eliminate:
  • Don't trust Heaney in a H2H playoffs
  • DItto for Kremer
  • Want no part of Canning, even with an awesome on-paper matchup
I'd then keep/throw Williams and Peralta and pick up Cantillo.
Last point would be Olson v Festa. I'd probably slightly lean Festa, b/c his skills have outpaced his results so far, and a bit risky taking Olson coming right off an injury. But the 2-start for RO is a decent counterpoint, and he looked good before getting hurt. Hope this helps... you win a title!

Thanks Brent,

Always enjoy these chats. A simply question of which 2 SPs offers the most upside for 2025. I do not "need" either SP having a solid rotation in hand. Neither are prohibitively expensive, though their salaries could perhaps be put to better use - but that's problematic at this point.

I'm talking about Yu Darvish and Walker Buehler. Options are:

1. Keep Darvish only
2. Keep Buehler only
3. Keep both
4. keep neither.

I'm leaning strongly to (1) as Darvish likely to outpitch Buehler. Buehler has struggled badly since returning and appears not to have fully recovered from surgery. Darvish appears simply rusty.

Thoughts, and thanks again.
Brent Hershey
12:27
Next year only, I'm wary of Darvish b/c of age and injury history, even though I'd rather have him here for the last two weeks over Buehler.
WB is the opposite ... has struggled since injury return, yes ... but way younger, high-level track record, you know LA will be a good team again. He's got more 2025 upside for me. So ... #2.

12:28
Who would you trust to start A.Garcia ,Texas or Larnach , Min, this week,in first place, need batting avg. Thanks
Brent Hershey
12:28
That last phrase is your clue. Ignore draft cost at this point. Larnach.

Thoughts on last keeper in fairly deep OBP dynasty league between Brayan Rocchio and David Hamilton?
Brent Hershey
12:31
Comparable OBPs this year; Hamilton obv has more roto juice than Rocchio. But Rocchio has better walk rate, is 3 years younger, and feels like at this juncture that his PT for 2025 is more secure than Hamilton's. Last spot, I'd probably lean Rocchio.

Greetings and thank you! Greene and Ray should be back this week. I hope. Looking at my roster would you replace Schwellenbach (@CIN) and/ or a reliever with one or both, all things being equal?
Brent Hershey
12:32
I'm keeping Schwelly for sure, even in CIN. Like Ray better than Greene; he's probably an upgrade over a reliever.

J. Montgomery has been a disaster for my team.  He's been on my bench every single time he's had a good outing, including last week's SV.  And he's usually on my active roster when he has a terrible outing.  He's likely to start in the next day or two.  Shall I activate him or bench him (substituting an IL player) for this next game?  I could lose a point by not getting his Ks, but I have 3 points at stake in WHIP and 1 in ERA. (Seems unlikely he will pitch enough innings to get a W as a starter.)
Brent Hershey
12:34
I'm wary of JoMo at this point. If you start him and he gets shelled and costs you; you'll look back and say "I shoulda known." He has limitations as you mention; my bet is that you can find something better.

12:36
Darvish with a 1.0 rating today and Arrighetti with -0.4. Write-ups dont' seem to match those. Trust either in H2H?
Brent Hershey
12:36
I'd prefer Darvish; though not sure about "trust" :-)  Track record; mainly -- SA has shown that his command sometimes eludes him, and things get ugly quick. I'll go with the vet.

Thanks Brent and your staff at BaseballHQ, made it to our championship!  Love the Daily starts breakdown & FAAB on Sundays.  Who do I start at 2nd this week 5x5, Nico Hoerner, Spencer Horwitz or Otto Lopez
Brent Hershey
12:39
Great to hear; thanks! Our numbers, based on opponent's SP ratings, say Hoerner easily. Horwitz not a bad play if you need power, though. Lopez a distant 3d.

Just saw SI headline that AHays is done for year??
Brent Hershey
12:42
Some concerning comments from Thomson yesterday; he did not go there explicitly but sounds like that is within the realm of possibility. At the very least, doesn't sound like he'll be back this week. Kidney infection has weakened his lower half, essentially.

Thoughts on Merrill Kelly this week? Desperate for wins and tempted to start him.
Brent Hershey
12:43
Can see it. Lots could go wrong in Coors ... but COL is so bad. Wouldn't recommend, but there are worse desperation plays.

FAlvarez or MAmaya ROS?
