Hello and welcome to the panel discussion on 'The Impact of Digital Media on Individuals, Organizations and Society'. The panelists are Carla Wilke, Chief Strategy and Integration Officer, Taylor, Steven Lataska-Nicks, CEO, Slideshop.com, Aron Thrope, Expert, Digital Media, Bain & company, Javier Cortes, Studio Director for Brand, Gensler, George Creppy, Communications Executive for Global Risk Management, Bank of America, Reshan Richards, CEO and Co-founder, Explain Everything. The professionals are here to share their insights on disruptions that has happened in so many different fields because of digital media.

The opening question has been put up  by the moderator Dr. J.D. Schramm, asking how you gather expertise in digital media?

Erin Thrope, a digital media expert also responded to the question. She says that the game is always changing .Digital media practitioners are always adapting and there is inadvertently going to be different logos and platform and acquisitions and digital media practitioners have to be flexible to a larger media landscape.

Dr. J.D. Schramm moves over to questions on careers in social media , and asks the panelists on what are the trends, advantages and what draws people searching for jobs or switching jobs in this age of social media.

Carla thinks that the digital media is one of the most creative outlets that there are. She says," Anyone that has the track record and builds up digital media experience can pretty much open the door to any company." She also says, "These days a career in digital media opens up the door to any sector that one might be interested in, including to traditional kind of business occupations, like finance and strategy."

Wilke also gives examples of IBM and Accenture and says, "There's a significant trend in the marketplace now of corporations building up digital teams internally. So, a lot of the content creation, owned channel management etc. are happening within companies now.

Reshan Richards adds ," One thing I am constantly focused on is people's relationship with media as creators." He advises that one must be "reflective and intentional about the ways one is naturally communicating".

George Creppy, a communication executive at Bank of America, says that people interact with his organisation in a lot of ways and he is fascinated by the interactions.

The moderator asks, "Are there any examples you have seen of heightened focus on experience on interpersonal connection because we are so digitally connected."

Answering to the question Erin rightly points out that technology expands to realm of reaching out to more people, it enhances experience when people are there, and is world of applicability. She says that technology enhances experiences but also that there must be responsible use of technology.

Schramm acknowledges that there is a lot of negative  publicity around digital media, and he asks the panelists what is that the new graduates stepping into this era need to be thoughtful of as they approach careers?

Javier Cortes highlights the impact of "culture of everywhere at once" due to complete obliteration of the line between work and life.

Cortes also adds that as a consequence, "the idea of a single use space is basically obsolete".
He says that "designing spaces that allows people to do whatever its is they want to do "

He concludes by that that "Spaces have to be designed for multiple uses throughout the time of day. Knowing is important to activate different modes of experience."

Erin also shares his piece of mind with a positive spin and says that, "There is an exploding world of marketing and technology, advanced analytics, and that there is huge demand and supply need. There is a limiting belief data science/analytics is hard but actually the learning gets."

Steven also replies by saying that ,"What we do is at the most basic level is key notes or power point templates". "It is a primary work flow. We telling stories trying to convey information. When it is used in a good way it becomes very powefull way of telling story."

Wilke replies to this question by saying that it depends on the kind of company one is going onto. Startups are exciting but can also be dangerous because of the uncertainity.

She also adds, " One of the most sought after attributes in digital professions today is the ability to understand the data, what is good and bad data, what is actionable and really insightful as a result of that data and then able to translate that to something that is really compelling from a story telling standpoint and enables you  to broker a relationship with  the customer in a completely different way."

Wilke concludes by advising that one must look for organisations that gives one a little bit flexibility to explore both the the qualitative and quantitative sides because both can be used to tell different kind of stories.
