What do the Tigers really have to deal? My issue with dealing Skubal is that is sends a message - we’re another three years away. Did we learn nothing from the Guardians? The Central can be had with a couple of smart signings and good player development. My (second) question - why are the Tigers so far behind on player development (compared with the “Guards”, the Braves, the Dodgers, the Rays and numerous others)? My God, the Dodgers and Astros seem to be able to develop players other teams have failed with - is this really that hard? Thanks for taking the questions and the rant!

This is the million dollar question, isn't it?
Perhaps there's some hope in the Harris hire. He was with the Cubs when they built the team that eventually won the World Series.
12:28
He's recently been with the Giants, who surprised everyone by eclipsing the Dodgers last year.
Perhaps he will be a positive influence on all the behind-the-scenes stuff. But we shall see.

In his presser when he was introduced to Tigers fans Scott Harris talked about the possibility of "taking risks." Is one "risk" the willingness to bring Justin Verlander back home where he belongs?
Dafee
12:29
Any chance Verlander comes back to Detroit? I’d love to see him retire as a Tiger.
Darragh McDonald
12:29
I would love to see it, but I wouldn't bet on it.
12:30
I'm guessing that Verlander, in addition to money, is looking for a team that will be in contention.

Have heard nothing much about Jake Rogers and Spencer Turnbull and their rehab. What can you tell us?
Darragh McDonald
12:32
I haven't seen anything official, but they're both over a year removed from surgery at this point. I would assume they're good for spring until hearing otherwise.

Do the Tigers go big this offseason, or do they wait until all their pitchers will be healthy in the 2023-2024 offseason to make those significant moves?
Darragh McDonald
12:33
I think it's the latter. So many question marks in the rotation right now that I think it makes sense to be patient.

Most high-profile player the Tigers have a decent chance of acquiring? (via FA or trade)

What positions will Scott Harris target in Free Agency?
Darragh McDonald
12:35
I think the Tigers would make sense for short-term contracts, guys who are looking for bouncebacks after down years.
12:36
Michael Conforto, Sean Manaea, Zach Eflin. How about a Matt Boyd reunion?
12:37
They can either help the team be decent or become deadline trade chips. If not, they probably won't cost too much.

Do the tigers count on the return of Austin Meadows after what was a truly disastrous  2022 season
Darragh McDonald
12:39
I don't know if you count on him, but there's logic to giving him another shot if they think he can be healthy.
When he was on the field, he wasn't a nightmare or anything. 101 wRC+.

If Tigers continue to be unsuccessful through 2024, do they do a full tear down or a light rebuild
Darragh McDonald
12:42
Depends on what they do between now and then. As of right now, Baez and E-Rod would be the only guys on the books at that point.
If those are still the only commitments, there's little need for a full teardown.

Scott Harris indicated in his introductory press conference that they needed to take calculated risks this offseason.  Do you think he means trades or might we see some free agent signings.
Darragh McDonald
12:44
I would guess it's somewhat similar to the "intelligent spending" promised by the Cubs a year ago.
They signed a whole bunch of veterans, mostly on short deals. But they also signed Stroman because he was willing to do a short-term deal with an opt-out.
12:45
Of the veterans they signed, a lot of them were hurt or not good. But they were able to trade a few, such as Chris Martin, David Robertson.

12:46
With bullpens melting down all over the playoffs will the tigers look to make the moves they should have been able to make at the trade deadline and move controllable bullpen arms
Darragh McDonald
12:46
Yeah, if they're really motivated to stockpile young talent, this might be their best play.
12:47
You could get some decent returns for Soto, Cisnero, Jimenez. Sign some veterans to replace them and maybe trade those as well when the deadline rolls around.

Lets say the Tigers use their payroll flexibility to help bring in young players. How about signing Kenley to a 2 year 30M deal- but frontloading the contract (lets say 20M+10M), then trading him at the deadline. What kind of prospect package could that fetch them?
Darragh McDonald
12:51
Might not even have to do a two-year deal for Kenley. Last offseason, he only got one year and was roughly the same guy as 2021.
12:52
But, yeah, I think something like that would be a fine play.
Bill
12:53
Who do you think is the next prospect we should be really excited about?
Darragh McDonald
12:54
Dillon Dingler spent all of 2022 in Double-A. He's considered a glove-first prospect but had a nice year at the plate.
He should be in Triple-A next year and could jump to the majors at some point.

Miggy, E-Rod & Candelario for Kris Bryant. COL eats $20M paid over 5 yrs to DET. Who says no?
Darragh McDonald
12:57
I appreciate the creativity but Bryant has a full no-trade clause. Miggy has 10-and-5 rights.

What can we expect next year for starting pitching? Mize and Skubal ready by mid-season?
