No, Shields is just a mild salary relief guy at best.

thoughts about twins having to make up 4 games this season already? seems like a lot...
Tim Dierkes
2:14
It is crazy to have three teams having played 17 games, and one having only played 11.  I wonder if something more can be done with the schedule to avoid these cold weather cities until April 15-20.

I'm worried that when Starlin Castro's contract is up he might be out of baseball..what do you think?
Tim Dierkes
2:16
No reason to think Castro will be out of baseball at age 30.  I guess he might have a hard time getting a starting job a few years after that though.

Is it wrong to be a bit bummed the Padres has to bring Lucchesi ASAP this year and will lose a year of service time? I can’t imagine he’s going anywhere.
Tim Dierkes

I wouldn't tell a fan how to feel about something, but why worry about the 2024 season?  Just enjoy what you've got now and maybe they can extend him along the way.

April 15, 2019? How can the Jays field a team to start 2019 with 2 players legitimate enough to pretend they are fits for the season/good enough to play in case of injury or learning curves, yet ready to be replaced 2 weeks into the season? Does Donaldson walk for sure? Do teh injuries to his calves over the past 2 seasons foretell a move to first?
Tim Dierkes
2:18
I really think they'll pretend that with Vlad Jr.  The Cubs pretended Mike Olt was the starting 3B over Kris Bryant.  I suppose doing it double-time would be pushing the envelope, but there's no mechanism in place to stop them.  I don't have a crystal ball on Donaldson, but I find that to be a tricky contract situation.  Steve Adams thinks five years, and I'm not even sold on four.  Being a late bloomer sucks for free agency.

A's wanted to sign long deal with Chapman. Scott Boras said no. Why?
Tim Dierkes
2:21
Impossible to evaluate without knowing the terms.  The guy has 100 big league games under his belt and was likely offered less than $30MM.  You can see why an agent would advise against that, especially for a position player, and particularly one who gets a lot of value from defense.  Even just two years from now he could be talking $60MM or something.

Is there anything to be excited about if you are a Cincinnati Reds fan.... Please tell me something good.
Tim Dierkes

Senzel coming up this year, Luis Castillo, enjoying potential HOFer Joey Votto.  Those are a few decent reasons.  Top 10 farm system.

Any thoughts on making double headers a regular event again? Could help with these early season crappy weathered games.
Tim Dierkes
2:23
I like the idea, though I'm guessing the players don't and it hurts team revenue.
Josh
2:23
Which team is more for real? Atlanta or Pittsburgh?
Tim Dierkes

Pirates.

With a lot of games getting postponed do you feel starting the season mid April and having Sunday double headers will help with that problem, plus players have less of a chance of playing in 30 degree weather (a lot of player complaints)
Tim Dierkes
2:25
Yes...maybe the players can also make it a bargaining point to go back to 154 games.  I imagine they'd support that.  That's obviously a concession to teams, dropping four home games.  But April games are pretty lightly attended anyway.  Sure would be nice to have some retractable roofs here in Chicago.

Should we be concerned about the rotation behind Kershaw?
Tim Dierkes
2:27
Yes.  There is a ton of volatility in all four of them, and what happens if Kershaw's back acts up again?  Don't forget that they got about 75% of a season's worth out of Brandon McCarthy and Yu Darvish last year, and they didn't really replace that.

2:27
Why do players even continue to use Boras after this past offseason?
Tim Dierkes
2:28
I'm sure the other agents are sniping at him after Moustakas and Holland, a couple of the highest profile free agency flops of the winter.  But the track record still speaks for itself.
Question
2:29
We have 423 innings that say Archer is a league average or slightly below pitcher with good strikeout and walk numbers and a nice contract. At what point do we just accept that this what he is now instead of pretending that isn't a significant sample?
Tim Dierkes
2:30
I think that gives too much credit to the predictive value of a guy's ERA.  But to say Archer has a real HR problem would be fair.  Still probably the best the market will offer, and a new situation could invigorat.e

How good is Ozzie Albies? His speed may turn singles into doubles, but is the homerun rate so far legit?
Tim Dierkes
2:31
I would have pegged Albies for 13-15 HR, so if you want to say that maybe he's already a 20 HR type, I could go with that.
Buccos

Pirates are a WC team. Tell me why they are and why they aren't.
Tim Dierkes
2:34
They are because Marte, Taillon, Polanco, Moran, Bell, and Vazquez are legit, and Austin Meadows can add to that.
2:35
They aren't because their rotation has been one of the league's worst even with Taillon, and none of their other SPs will  post an ERA under 4.15.

I just saw your free agent rankings. In my opinion and I am sure of others as well. The Yankees need a lefty power bat in the middle of that lineup to break up all the right handed hitters. Is there anyway they could fit  a Bryce Harper into the mix?
Tim Dierkes
2:35
Here's that post:
2:37
With Harper/Yanks, I just have to question whether that's a good use of $35-40MM per year.  Runs are runs, but if you already have a stacked offense, it could make sense to address deficiencies instead.

Who wins this game? A team of 9 present day Vlad Guerrero Sr or 9 Vlad Guerrero Jr?
Tim Dierkes
2:37
Jr easily.  Pitching would be interesting to watch

What shift will happen when Acuna comes up? Will Markakis still start, or will Tucker take his spot?
Tim Dierkes
2:38
I would think Tucker goes to the bench.  Works more neatly if he cools off, Acuna heats up.  Still got 25 guys in that clubhouse to justify decisions to.
Crap, I just ended a sentence in a preposition.  What was I thinking of!!!

Will they build Joe Kelly a statue in Boston for plunking a Yankee and having no fear?
