Top 50 Free Agents Chat With Tim Dierkes

Two years ago they walked away from free agency with Sabathia and Neil Walker for $14MM.  Four years ago: Brendan Ryan for $1MM.
So I'd say it can be, because it has been.
10:22
That said, don't take the list as some kind of conviction that the Yankees will mostly do nothing this winter.  We just didn't like them as the favorite on the two big gun SPs that are out there.  Doesn't mean they can't sign one.

Besides Gardner, what other players do you see the Yankees being in on with regards to the list? It seems like someone that Yankees fans would like is Drew Pomeranz. Is he a potential fit?
Tim Dierkes
10:22
Related question!  Yes, signing DrewPom is very much something that fits within the Yankees' playbook.  Whether they want to pump another $6-7MM per year into their bullpen, I don't know, but they certainly like to go after the best relievers.
Anthony
10:22
I’d understand if he was offered a big number. But, why would Betances go to another team for a low $7 million when NYY could pay that easily?
Tim Dierkes
10:24
Here's a good read on their luxury tax situation post-Chapman.  It relates to our thinking - $7MM is actually a big deal when you're already flying past the first luxury tax threshold and possibly aiming to stay under the second.
10:25
If I were a Yankees (or Cubs, or Red Sox, or Astros, or Dodgers) fan, I'd direct my ire toward the con job of these teams acting like that first luxury tax line is some kind of hard stopping point.  It's not a salary cap!  It's a minor tax on the overage!  All these teams can easily sign any free agent - if they don't, it's because they don't want to, because they're being run more like a business than the way George Steinbrenner used to.
Rant over!

Is it possible that the Cubs might go after Rendon, and then trade KB for a couple of young guys like Julio Urias and Alex Verdugo?
Tim Dierkes
10:26
Hmm.  Honestly, I don't find that plan all too plausible.

Do the Astros try to trade Reddick this offseason?  If so what for?
Tim Dierkes
10:27
if Reddick was a free agent right now, age 33 coming off a pair of 1 WAR seasons, we'd be talking a few million bucks with the possibility of a minor league deal.  So if Reddick is to be traded, it would be to any team willing to take on a few million dollars.  It won't create much payroll flexibility for the Astros.
10:28
But, one path could be to find a bad contract where the player is owed $13MM over two years or something, and then swap those out to reduce the hit in 2020.

I’m not trying to be critical, but I can’t see the Phillies signing just Wheeler and a risky bullpen arm.
Tim Dierkes
10:29
My feeling is that the Phillies are viable candidates to sign any of the free agents this winter.  So if you think they'll land Cole, I wouldn't argue.

I'd like keuchel to go with minor and lynn. Possible?
Tim Dierkes
10:29
Absolutely.

Why was the MLBTR team convinced the Phillies will miss out on both Cole and Strasburg?
Tim Dierkes
10:30
With Strasburg, coming off a WS win from a team with tons of payroll space, and a player who already signed an extension on the eve of free agency, the more likely choice for us was for him to stay.
10:31
If you want to make a Phillies argument for Cole over the Angels, that's reasonable.  We're kind of going with the signals that the Angels will be aggressive this winter (Maddon being one) as well as the California connection.

What are the odds of Theo being able to retain Castellanos and keep him in the Nor
Tim Dierkes
10:31
The Cubs have the money to retain Castellanos, though I'm unconvinced they would commit to him as their RF for 3-4 years and Heyward in CF.

Could Milwaukee shoot for the stars and try and get a guy like Baumgarner or Hamels? Or is that just to expensive?
Tim Dierkes
10:32
I think the Brewers could afford either of those players.  David Stearns has been modest on free agent pitching to date, but that doesn't rule anything out.

You know might type when it comes to SP. I love spin rate more than tex-mex. Give me two potential mid rotation guys that fit my m.o. from previous years.
Tim Dierkes

Hence the Lindblom pick, which also factors in them being quite tight on payroll at present.

Love the Top 50, just wish my Blue Jays were more represented. Were their any players outside of Roark that you felt they have a shot at? I have heard a lot of Keuchel chatter....
Tim Dierkes
10:34
We like them for Keuchel and had them for his team for quite a while.  Sometimes we have to change one pick and it leads to a bunch of other changes, though.  The issue with the Jays is one I'm sure you know - it's not a top free agent destination, so they need to overpay to get guys.  Like a second year for Roark, third for Keuchel, etc.  Which is why the Chase Anderson trade made sense.  We thought that if the Braves had picked up Julio Teheran's option, the Jays would have traded for him.

any chance Mets resign wheeler and what are your thoughts about Porcello being a back-up plan to the loss of Wheeler
Tim Dierkes
10:35
Certainly there's a chance, though it seems payroll may be too tight to accommodate $18-20MM for Wheeler.  I do find Porcello a viable backup plan.
Red Sox
10:35
Any chance the Red Sox could sign Julio Teheran for a 4th or 5th starter??
Tim Dierkes

It's not crazy.

Indians Outright Four Pitchers. By Jeff Todd | November 4, 2019 at 2:11pm CDT

The Indians announced today that they have outrighted four pitchers from their 40-man roster... Danny Salazar elected free agency in lieu of a minor-league assignment. How does he NOT end up on  the Top-50 list?
Tim Dierkes
10:36
By virtue of pitching four MLB innings in the last two years.
Yasiel Puig
10:36
Only $8M for 1 season with the Tigers? I think I'm worth more than that. Why do you think I'm worth $8M?
Tim Dierkes
10:37
Better question would be, why do you think he's worth more?  Aside from the baggage, Puig is a dude who's been worth more than 2 WAR once in the last five seasons.  He was healthy all year this year and was exactly league average as a hitter.  If there's something great in there, we haven't seen it in a while.

For me to sign Cole, I need to dump sum salary.  Think the Dodgers will take Stanton if he waives NTC?
Tim Dierkes

Nope
