Will the Jays be in on any of the QO’ed starting pitchers like Odorizzi, MadBum, or Wheeler?
Tim Dierkes
10:38
My guess is that they won't go hard on those guys.

Marcell Ozuna only 3/45? Seems light give his age and statcast numbers. More like 4/100. Also, which of the top 50 or so do you think the Cardinals could/should make a play for?
Tim Dierkes
10:39
I'd put good money on the under if the bar was set at $100MM.  Or $80MM.  We know we're the low man on Ozuna, but with his underwhelming last two years, qualifying offer, and LF-only arm, we don't think the market will be all that kind to him.
Jeff Todd being the dissenting opinion.  Ozuna's defense is definitely Statcast.

Why do you think the Yankees chose not to resign Didi?
Tim Dierkes
10:40
They are being careful with their available funds - at least a qualifying offer would have made sense for a team with some cash to throw around.

Pirates will have a new GM and manager. not only that, but has a new team President who is trying to devise a new identity for a team who's fans are rapidly turning on due to lack of salary and smart decisions with the roster. That said, what direction you foresee the Pirates heading this off-season? A rebuild might be necessary but fans are already fed up. Any chance they go the route of the Reds last season with PR gems?
Tim Dierkes
10:41
I'd like to see the Reds route because it's more fun.  But I do think they'll lean toward rebuild moves and value free agent buys.

Didi still going to Cincinnati? I just don't see the fit.
Tim Dierkes
10:42
The fit seems good to me, they have a vacancy at shortstop.

Which free agent who got a QO (Outside of Abreu where a return to the White Sox is most likely) will see their market hurt the most by the offer?
Tim Dierkes
10:43
Will Smith, Ozuna, Odorizzi, even MadBum and Donaldson could all see significant adverse effects.
This is another one of those things teams do that we as fans should be questioning, the idea that they can't/won't sign a free agent because of a QO.
Phillies Hopeful for 2020

Castellanos to the Phils?
Tim Dierkes
10:44
I don't see a corner outfield fit, and there's a good reason the Tigers took him off 3B.

You put Lindblom in here at No. 42, ahead of Betances, Smyly, Wacha, Strop, etc. Is Lindblom really that valuable? And what are thoughts on Lindblom?
Tim Dierkes
10:44
Steve Adams' blurb in that post sums up our Lindblom thoughts pretty well.  He's kind of our Merrill Kelly, mildly interesting ex-pat SP guy this year.

I don't disagree with the logic behind a quiet FA offseason for NYY, but what Top of Rotation SPs are even available by trade?
Tim Dierkes
10:45
The problem for the Yankees and other teams is that the trade market does not clearly offer great starting pitching.  Kluber and Syndergaard could be dealt, but could easily stay put.
10:46
The Rockies have a few interesting guys, like Jon Gray.
How do you feel about Dylan Bundy?
Jacob
10:46
Michael Wacha to the Royals on a one year “rebound” deal? Team need + a Matheny reunion makes me think it could Be a possibility.
Tim Dierkes
10:46
I can buy that.
Astros
10:46
Who do you see as the next low key starting pitching target for the Astros?  After having success with Morton and, to a lesser extent, Miley, who could be next?
Tim Dierkes
10:47
Alex Wood, Wacha, Brett Anderson, Martin Perez, Drew Smyly, and Matt Moore could fit that bill aside from Lindblom.

Who's the dark horse team to make a big splash in the free agent market?
Tim Dierkes
10:48
I'd say the Twins and White Sox, in that they are not generally thought as huge free agency players.  I also think the Marlins could make a mid-sized splash (Castellanos or something) if they wanted to.

Is there a chance Puig goes back to Cincinnati?
Tim Dierkes
10:49
Not out of the question, but he wasn't great there and they traded him, so I wouldn't call them the favorite.

Why is Ozuna a good fit for the fake competing, rebuilding Giants?
Tim Dierkes
10:50
Zaidi talked about finding power, with a track record of hitting in their park, and Ozuna fits that.  It's not as if we're projecting a huge contract.

Does JDM not opting out close the door on Mookie being in a Sox Uni in 2020?
Tim Dierkes
10:50
No, I don't think JDM staying guarantees a Mookie trade.  I feel like JDM staying was always an 80% probability and Bloom and their other execs have known this.

Would someone like Gio Gonzalez fit in the Marlins plans, maybe an upgrade from Wei-Yin Chen. He's a veteran that can stabilize that rotation and be a key clubhouse figure for the young roster.

Also, do you see the Marlins trading for someone like Albert Almora? I think he could thrive on a team like the Marlins. Local guy and could roam the outfield at Marlins Park pretty well. With Brinson being a disaster thus far, and Anderson moving to 3rd likely, I think it will be a great fit.
Tim Dierkes
10:51
These are both completely plausible Marlins moves.
We had the Marlins on Puig for a while before remembering the fallout with Don Mattingly.
Buying Low
10:51
Of the players who didn't make your list, who do you consider to be the top buy low candidates?
Tim Dierkes
10:53
Jordan Lyles, Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, Hunter Pence, Eric Thames, Matt Moore, Jake Diekman, Brandon Morrow.

Yesterday, Keith law suggested a Nick Punto 2.0 trade where the sox package Xander, sale, and price to clear payroll. 1) I don't think that's the least bit viable 2) assuming it is possible who would even be interested? White Sox, Angels (where they send pujols back and subsequently release him), and rangers? Maybe nats to replace rendon and strasburg?
