After 2020's historically disastrous bullpen, don't you think the Phillies will go hard after more than one high quality reliever? Middleton has the money and has to do something to stay in the same ballpark as Steve Cohen.
Tim Dierkes

I do.  Hendriks was kind of symbolic for them in a way.  There are only 9 relievers in our top 50 this year, and more than nine teams needing RP, so I like to spread them around.  Also worth keeping in mind that there are some solid RPs off the list, like Shane Greene or Jake McGee.

In regard to Bauer to the Dodgers, it seems like with Kershaw, Buehler, Price, Urias, May, and Gonsolin and Josiah Gray, they already are deep in starting pitchers. I’m not sure they’d be willing to make Bauer an offer without a corresponding trade or move
Tim Dierkes

They seem like a team that might be opportunistic in trying to acquire Lindor.  But listen...I wouldn't get too hung up on the Dodgers-Bauer pick.  We understand they're flush on SP, but it checked a lot of boxes nonetheless.  In reality, they might want nothing to do with him.  We went through every team and most have a reservation for one reason or another.

I’m still a #3 starting pitcher on a contender. Why did the Padres lose faith in me and put me in bullpen at end of year? I think I’m worth $12 mil/yr
Tim Dierkes
1:21
I think they just didn't need a fifth starter anymore at a certain point in September, and hoped he could be a multi-inning weapon in the playoffs maybe the way Urias was for the Dodgers.  That plan didn't really amount to much.
I was probably the biggest Richards guy, as Steve was pretty down on him for the lack of innings he's provided.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but what evidence do we have that the White Sox are planning to spend other than it making sense from a competitive window perspective?  Forgive me, but we Sox fans have been a bit scarred by the history of Reinsdorf stopping short with incomplete rosters.
Tim Dierkes
1:23
Aside from the Mets and Blue Jays, we don't really have clear evidence that any team is going to spend a lot of money, so some educated guesses had to be made.  But I don't think the contract we gave Springer is crazy, and they offered something similar to Zack Wheeler just last winter.  Plus, the La Russa hire suggests they are pushing in chips right now.  I guess a LH bat would be a little better, but I like Springer there.
Cody

I think the Joc/Cardinals fit is good but why don't the Cards just go after Springer rather than sign Joc who would most certainly be a platoon player?
Tim Dierkes
1:23
I don't think the Cards have the payroll space for it.  Just this morning we had Yadi/Waino/Wong/Joc all going to STL and it just felt like too much money for them to be spending, so we moved Wong off.
1:24
Gave strong consideration to putting Yadi on the Yankees.  Would have been fun, the reactions to that one.
Where will Yadier Molina sign?

Tim I saw your list and I'm Impressed. But I can't afford Cesar Hernandez, what do I do?

The D'Backs can't toss $6MM at a free agent?  I think they can.

Put on your agent hat - would you be pushing your clients to take a 1 year deal and hope for a better market in 2022?
Tim Dierkes
1:27
It would depend quite a bit on the individual player.  Steve advocated for Semien to take a multiyear deal given the potential SS free agent class next winter.  So maybe he's a guy who should max out if the offer is decent.  Meanwhile if you're Gausman, maybe you accept the one year, $18.9MM in an environment you enjoyed, then hit the market without a QO and with teams at least a little more willing to spend.
Then again, next winter we've got the uncertainty of the CBA expiring.

Where am I on this list?

Somewhere below Honorable Mentions.

Sox are supposedly going to be big spenders. Are they in on Bauer?
Tim Dierkes
1:28
They've got some money to work with, but I don't think they're ready to go all-out this winter.  The team would need too much work.  Plus, did they really hire Bloom just to give him a mandate to sign all the best free agents?

As a Phillies fan, I also believe they'll miss out on JT. Besides having to watch Sixto pitch for Marlins now, will McCann be a good replacement for JT?
Tim Dierkes
1:28
I think McCann would be a solid signing.  A guy who really came into his own recently, improved his defense...Steve pushed a three-year deal for him.

Why do you expect LeMahieu to leave the Yankees?  And why Simmons?  If DJ leaves, won't they try going heavy on Lindor?
Tim Dierkes
1:29
I think it's possible the Yanks hit a wall on what they're willing to pay DJLM and someone else tops it.  Simmons would be a nice way to improve the infield defense without overcommitting.  But are the Yankees a good match for Lindor?  Absolutely.

Could we get Bauer , Realmuto and Springer ?
Tim Dierkes
1:30
I would be shocked if the Mets got all three.  The excitement about Steve Cohen really seems to be off the charts.

I'd rather see LeMahieu on the Angels rather than Semien.  Long term with DJ at 2B and Fletcher at SS.  Then you can have DJ?Fletcher hitting right in front of Trout Rendon.  Good God pitchers would be hard pressed to get out of the first without giving up multiple runs.
Tim Dierkes
1:30
That seems viable to me.

Are you anticipating any bigger non tenders than Wong?
Tim Dierkes
1:31
Wong was not a non-tender...they simply turned down a $12.5MM club option.  And let me tell ya...I think they would have turned that down in a normal offseason.  It's just not the type of player who gets $12.5MM/year in free agency.
Let me think about non-tenders for a minute.  The biggest would be Kris Bryant...tiny chance, but not zero.

Travis Shaw, Mark Canha, Kyle Schwarber, Austin Hedges, Steven Matz, Tommy Pham, Josh Bell, Jon Gray, Matthew Boyd, Nomar Mazara, Carlos Rodon, Gary Sanchez
All possible for me.

MLBTR projects the White Sox to go after one big fish (Springer) and two smaller acquisitions (Paxton, re-signing Colome). Do you think if they didn’t go after someone like Springer, they could get 2-3 guys instead such as a different OF option (Brantley), another SP (Morton, Quintana) and another RP (Hendriks)?
Tim Dierkes
1:35
Your scenario seems plausible to me, yes.  One reason we like Springer there over a Brantley is that Eloy can't really play RF, nor can Brantley.
Braves
1:35
Do you think that the Braves will go after Brad Hand, Liam Hendericks or Trevor Rosenthal? They have shown that they will spend money on Relivers in the Past?
Tim Dierkes
1:35
I could easily see the Braves going after one of those guys.  We brought the prices on relievers way down after 29 teams passed on Hand at one year and $10MM.
