I could see it being fun for him, but what if the Jays don't even play in Toronto next year?  Plus, there was drama after they drafted him...I'm not sure whether any of that still lingers for him.

Who do you see the yanks pursuing the most this offseason?
Tim Dierkes
1:38
It's easy to see the Yanks diving in on Realmuto or Yadier Molina, try to find a catcher they like.  I could see them on just about any SP up to and including Bauer.  They can bring back DJLM if they'd like to.  They're the Yankees...none of these free agents are out of reach for them.

Why did you not predict any top 35 free agents going to SD? Their window of contention just opened.
Tim Dierkes
1:39
Mainly didn't see top free agents that make a ton of sense for them.  Their rotation need is fairly most if Lamet and Clevinger are healthy.  If you want to put them on just about any non-Hendriks RP, I'd buy that.

Do you think the La Russa hiring in Chicago helps or hurts the Sox's chances of landing a big free agent?  On one hand, players may love the opportunity to play for a hall of fame manager.  On the other, some (like Bauer) may prefer to sign somewhere with a more analytically-minded skipper.  Thoughts?
Tim Dierkes
1:40
I could see La Russa being a turnoff for some free agents, but it's not a winter where guys can afford to be too picky.  Also, I think they will go for a pitching coach about half his age.

No chance Stroman takes QO? Or Mets offer to extend him?
Tim Dierkes
1:40
From what I understand, it wasn't a great marriage there.  Maybe a new regime erases that.  I think Stro thinks that even after missing the season, he can get a nice multiyear deal and doesn't have to accept the QO.
Jamison

You realize you're just giving people ideas for the free agent contest, right?
Tim Dierkes
1:41
That's good!  Last winter we had a guy get 15 correct which was quite impressive.
Pirates
1:41
We are embarassing. Didn’t even have one guy in it
Tim Dierkes
1:41
It's hard to be a Pirates fan right now.  I could find a lot of spots to upgrade, but I don't see them being active in free agency.

With teams not putting a claim on 1 yr/10 mil for Brad Hand, does this put a ceiling on what relievers get this offseason? Will anyone get more money?
Tim Dierkes
1:42
We kind of decided it did put a ceiling on everyone below Hendriks.  But, it may be that teams just don't want to commit the $10MM right now, before seeing how things shake out.  Or maybe there's something about Hand, as a lefty with a 91.4 mph fastball, that serves as a red flag for some despite an excellent season.

I see you have Bauer to the Dodgers....but going forward don’t you think it’s more important to re do the bullpen for LA?
Tim Dierkes
1:43
I think signing Bauer would strengthen their bullpen, as it would push a good pitcher into it...but yes, it's easy to see the Dodgers adding a good late-inning RP.

Will Schoop and Cron be back in Detroit. When they were in the lineup we had a chance to win every game
Tim Dierkes
1:44
I feel like they might be able to find more interesting players than that pair.
Chicolini

Can you explain Simmons to the Yankees?
Tim Dierkes
1:44
Bump Torres over to 2B, improve the defense possibly a lot (especially with a catcher upgrade as well), avoid large commitments in "these uncertain times"

Your website predicts George Springer will sign with the White Sox, but Sox owner Reinsdorf is said to be very bothered by the Astro's cheating scandal and the Sox need  a middle of the order left handed bat.  Comment?
Tim Dierkes
1:47
Springer has a 139 wRC+ against right-handed pitching over the last three years, so if mashing righties is the motivation for wanting a LH bat, he does that.  As for Reinsdorf being abnormally bothered by the Astros thing, I hadn't heard that.  If that's true, it could be an impediment, sure.  Historically, Reinsdorf hasn't had any issue at all bringing in the "bad boys" - Albert Belle, Carl Everett, and Dennis Rodman come to mind.  And Springer isn't a bad dude in the way Belle was.

Do you think the Dodgers would sign a guy like Hamels or Lester for the backend of the rotation?
Tim Dierkes
1:47
I'd think they'd either go big, or leave it be.  I'm reminded of when the Nationals signed Max Scherzer.  They didn't need him, they just wanted him.

Quite a bit of payroll coming off the books for the Cubs and most likely trading 2 core hitters who make money coming off the books next Cubs have to be players for guys like Brantley and DJ. You'll them just sign Archer which they might.  I think they will be bigger players than that
Tim Dierkes
1:48
We actually had the Cubs as the pick for Brantley for a while.  But reading about the layoffs, looking at their last two pre-pandemic offseasons...unloading Schwarber to bring in a $14-15MM/year Brantley, it didn't quite click for me.
1:49
A guy like Brantley could possibly cost less.  Or maybe they do unload Bryant early and want to spend a little.  It's just hard to project the Cubs spending right now.

Where would Justin Turner fit if a return to the Dodgers is not in the cards?
Tim Dierkes

The Nats and Braves came up in our discussions.

Charlie Morton is going to get more than the 8 million predicted. I know it's nitpicky, but it's my opinion.
Tim Dierkes
1:50
I could certainly see that.  But he's also a guy who may be willing to pitch for like 2-3 teams, so that can result in a bargain.

Does LHP Jose Quintana have some quality years left as a starting pitcher?
Tim Dierkes
1:50
I think he can be a 160 inning, 4.25 ERA guy.  It's not nothing.

Does Kevin Gausman even hesitate at the QO?
Tim Dierkes
1:51
Yes...we anticipated the QO and were leaning toward him turning it down.  The perfect middle ground might be a three-year deal with the Giants in the $39-45MM range.

Will teams wait to see if universal DH is coming to 2021 before offering contracts to some players.
Tim Dierkes
1:51
I'm surprised they couldn't figure it out definitively by now.  I think both GMs and agents would prefer to know.  It matters a ton for guys like Cruz and Ozuna.

Predictions are so hard. TThese are human beings Not robots. Sometimes the Real boss their wife or gf influences where they go. Be close to family, comfort with city, kids in school/lose friends etc. Supposedly wife of Wheeler was a big reason he signed with PHI and I painfully remember when we lost  John Olerud to SEA when his wife wanted him to play there. We had a great IF Edgardo, Ventura, Ordonez, What might have been...  wipes away tears Argh. Thats why Nostradamous retired from making predictions. Too much criticism and maybe church leaders jk
Tim Dierkes

It's really hard to present team picks for each player that make sense as one coherent scenario that could happen.  If I had a time machine and got the actual teams, and went back and published them early, people would still say, "Well, THAT will never happen."
