Jacob DeGrom

With Mad Max out now until at least the end of June, or maybe until the all star break, is there a chance I’ll be back before the all star break? Especially if things start going sideways for us in the division?
Anthony Franco
3:26
I don't think they're planning to rush deGrom back just because Scherzer got hurt. That feels like a recipe for disaster given deGrom's health history

Is the Miami BP a complete mess? Who, if anyone, emerges as a full time close?
Anthony Franco
3:28
I'm not sure why you'd consider it a disaster. The Marlins had a good bullpen last season and rank sixth in relief ERA right now, I think it's fine
3:29
Anthony Bender regressed a little bit, but Cole Sulser and Richard Bleier are consistently good. Anthony Bass is fine, Steven Okert looks like a good find. Probably a borderline top ten relief unit for me

If you were James Click would you be looking for an upgrade at catcher? Who would you look at and what would they cost?
Anthony Franco
3:30
I don't think they want to replace Maldonado because of all the intangible stuff he does behind the plate and in the locker room
3:31
If there's a bat-first depth type available for cheap -- say Stephen Vogt comes back off Oakland's IL and hits well for two months -- then I could see a flier to upgrade over Castro as the #2. But I don't expect them to beat the market for Willson Contreras or anyone of that nature

When you think Oneil Cruz (PIT) gets called up?
Anthony Franco
3:32
That kind of depends on him. I think he might've been up already if he were performing in Triple-A
If he turns it on for a month, I expect the Pirates would make the call. But he has to play better first

Anthony, thanks for the chat.  Can you tell us exactly how the 'taxi squad' works?  How many guys?  Are they on the 40 man?  Do you think this hurts the guys on the taxi squad by them just working out and not playing?
Anthony Franco
3:33
The taxi squad is up to five players, one of whom has to be a catcher if you're going to use the full allotment. They can be players on the 40-man roster but don't have to be, although the team has to select the guy onto the 40 if they're going to activate him for a game
3:35
As for whether it hurts or helps, that's probably player-to-player. I don't think you want to carry a top prospect on the taxi squad unless you're on the verge of calling them up. Being around the MLB team probably has some intangible benefits just in terms of seeing how those guys prepare, but it can't be as good for skill development as actual minor league game play would be
For this reason, many of the taxi squad guys are journeymen third catchers and/or depth reliever types, not really guys with much developmental ceiling anyhow

Do you think Tyler O'Neill is going to join Paul DeJong in Memphis? He's not hitting and now isn't playing much.
Anthony Franco
3:37
Man, that's kind of a crazy thought. He hasn't been playing recently because of shoulder soreness, but if we get to a point where Dickerson straight up passes him on the depth chart, I think you have to consider an optional assignment
3:38
The thing is Dylan Carlson also isn't playing well so it's not like they're overloaded with productive outfielders at the moment

3:38
Okay, so I know this sounds crazy, but what if Boston instead of paying Bogaerts pays Aaron Judge? We desperately need some outfield help and the system has multiple middle infielders. He'd love the wall, and could play right seamlessly.
Anthony Franco
3:39
Yeah it's a viable fit. Kind of hard for me seeing Hal Steinbrenner let that happen for obvious reasons, but there's a pretty clear case for the Sox to make a run at him
3:40
As someone whose only rooting interest in hot stove season is chaos, I'll say that would be incredibly fun. The comment section on that post would be wild

Christian Vazquez will ultimately be playing for someone other than Boston next year, maybe before the end of the year. Plawecki will be a FA at season's end too. What does the future look like behind the plate in Beantown? Are we looking in house or on the trade/FA market?
Anthony Franco
3:41
There's a decent number of veteran stopgap catchers in free agency next year and I think they'll get a Mike Zunino or Roberto Pérez type, with Wong and Hernández staying in depth roles

Can you see us moving someone like pillar up to the bigs. He seems to be crushing it
Anthony Franco
3:42
Yeah I think he deserves and will get a shot at some point
Probably won't be a long leash. If he struggles over his first 30 plate appearances, he might get DFA again. But I do think the Triple-A performance is loud enough he'll be in the majors at some point this year

Of the current pitchers leading the pack for AL and NL Cy Young, which do you trust the least to remain competitive in that race over the length of the season
Anthony Franco
3:43
Hmm, Carlos Rodón if he stays healthy and Dylan Cease?
Joe Musgrove and Kevin Gausman are also really good obviously

3:44
On the flip side of the Vazquez question, what will his market look like? Maybe fill the spot Yadi frees up in St. Louis when he retires?
Anthony Franco
3:45
Kind of depends on how well he performs, I think. At the moment, it seems the Cardinals or any win-now team should probably be aiming higher
Which would leave him with like the Pirates, Tigers if they don't re-sign Barnhart. Guardians never seem to care about offense from their catchers so maybe they'd take a shot for a couple million bucks

Are the Mets going to push for Montas to head their way before July?
Anthony Franco
3:46
I'm sure they'll be one of about 15 teams that inquires. I probably wouldn't have them as my primary landing spot
Crash
3:47
Who could be a realistic trade target for the jays to get a ‘quality’ lefthanded bat?
Anthony Franco
3:47
Depends on what you mean by quality, I guess. David Peralta, Andrew Benintendi, Adam Frazier are all decent players I expect to move
3:48
Josh Bell's a switch-hitter and would be a big-ticket one, but that's probably too many bat-only guys for the Jays' taste
A's Fan
3:49
OK... who would be your primary landing spot for Montas?
Anthony Franco
3:49
Rays?

Tigers are running out of healthy ptichers...I can't remember a team's rotation being wiped out so early. Will they try to pick someone up even though they're pretty bad so far?
