What would a return package on IKF look like? Good athlete and solid infield defender who's a below average but not unplayable hitter with some team control. A top 7 prospect from a teams farm system? Two top 15 guys? What would the rangers want?
Anthony Franco
2:22
IKF feels more like two guys in the 10-20 range on a typical system, although obviously the strength of each team's farm varies. He's a nice player but might be better suited for a utility role on a contender
2:23
I think the big thing on him comes down to how teams view him as a shortstop. Public metrics were split -- DRS loved him there, Statcast didn't. If you think he's a plus defender, then he's a regular who you can certainly live with near the bottom of the order
2:24
If you think he's just ok at shortstop and better suited at second or third base, then he probably ends up in that Leury Garcia/Jonathan Villar high-end utility guy range
Matt Olson
2:24
Realistically, what does my return package look like? Something similar to Gallo or is it more likely Oakland gets a top 25 prospect for me
Anthony Franco
2:24
Should bring more than Gallo. Better player with two full seasons of club control
2:25
Getting a headlining prospect who falls between 25 and 50 overall on most public prospect lists (plus a couple interesting mid-tier types or big league ready complementary pieces) feels about right to me

Seems like the White Sox are looking to give up Craig Kimbrel. They could surely use a second baseman. Ideally someone who is on the cheaper side and has some team control. Say a... Nick Madrigal type? In all seriousness though, that trade has got to look pretty bad so far and arguably from the start
Anthony Franco
2:26
Yeah I'm sure they'd like that one back. They were in a bit of a bind given the state of their farm system, but that looked like a lot at the time

As always, thanks, Anthony for doing this.  Assume a month to 2 months of regular season games are cancelled;  will owners anticipate that attendance will drop this season because of bitter fans and then restrict spending of their front offices?   How will this impact your predictions for the Carlos Correa's of the world?  What about the Middle Class of free agents?  In that scenario, which teams will take advantage vs sit on the sidelines?   Were the Yankees for example anticipating this scenario and planning on discount hunting in April or May?  Were the Rangers ignoring the risk?  Or historically has attendance bounced back from sports league strikes fast enough that the whole assumption above is not in play?
Anthony Franco
2:27
Hmm, these are really good questions that I haven't given enough thought. We did see pretty significant spending cuts in the wake of 2020, but that was obviously a full season of no gate revenue
And April is the month that's least attended to begin with, particularly in the north
2:28
So I think we'd see a bit of downturn in spending but not at the level of the 2020-21 offseason
Yankee fan

At first I wanted Jacob Stallings so badly. But then I saw what the Marlins actually gave up for him: A controllable and cheap 28 year-old starter with a 3.24 ERA plus tow prospects in the Marlins top 25? I know stallings is good but that seems like a massive premium to pay for a 30-year old catcher whose a below-average hitter, no matter how good his defense might be.
Anthony Franco
2:28
I thought it was reasonable for both sides. Nice haul for Pittsburgh but perfectly defensible from Miami's perspective
2:29
They got Thompson as a minor league free agent last year, and he wasn't likely to be in their season-opening rotation based on their pitching depth. Connor Scott's stock has dipped since they took him in the first round, Kyle Nicolas is probably going to be a reliever
2:30
No one there I would take off the table for an affordable Gold Glove catcher, particularly given how young the Miami pitching staff is. I'm sure they value having that kind of veteran defensive presence
Brian Cashman
2:30
There's no shot I actually trade Joey Gallo, right? Pretty uncharacteristic of me to admit I lost a trade so soon, plus would the return even be that good?
Anthony Franco
2:31
I think it's possible but unlikely. It would be another sell-low type of situation and would be placing a lot of faith in Aaron Hicks staying healthy all year

With the talk about eliminating draft pick compensation, why can't they just do what the NFL does and give a pick to the team that looses a player without taking one away from the team that signs them? Seems like a solid compromise to me, if compromising even exists at this point
Anthony Franco
2:32
I expect that's what'll happen, yeah. Just take away the disincentive for the team that signs the guy and everyone's happy

2:32
For fantasy purposes this year in a redraft league Ohtani or Bichette as your first round pick?
Anthony Franco
2:33
Probably Ohtani but that's a better question for Brad. I've never played in a roto league and don't feel great about my ability to parse out the weird category structure it incorporates
Kevin Kieramier
2:33
I'm probably on the move after the lockout, right? Who might I go to? Any chance I get moved within the division? What's my return like? A teams top 10 prospect? Two top 30 guys? hard to see a super top guy given my injury bug and poor offense
Anthony Franco
2:34
Yeah I think he's gone. Phillies, White Sox, Braves, Giants, Guardians all make sense
Astros are probably fine with Chas McCormick and Jake Meyers but maybe James Click loves Kiermaier
2:35
I think two guys in the 15-30 range of a system, or maybe one and a middle reliever makes sense
One year and $14.5MM for Kiermaier is fine but not teeming with surplus value for the reasons you mentioned

2:36
What do the advanced metrics say about Josh Rojas? I love his position eligibility (second, short, third, and outfield) but I am hopeful is hitting is projected to improve. Thanks!
Anthony Franco
2:37
Plays a bunch of positions as you mentioned, none of them all that well. He's got really good plate discipline, makes a ton of contact but doesn't have much power
2:38
Most projections think he'll hit around .250/.330/.400 next season. I think that's about what I'd take, maybe a little above that if they limit his exposure to lefties
Good player, guy I'd want on my team, but I don't think he's a burgeoning star. Just don't see that kind of power there
RaysFan, but I'm realistic
2:39
With the backlash of the Split Season (all the negative feelings generated in the Tampa Bay Area) and the Split Season Plan being squashed, what do you think the chances are that Sternberg will ask to move the Rays (Nashville,Portland, Vegas...) before or by 2027? I have doubts that the Tampa side of the Tampa Bay Area taxpayers will fund another stadium -1 $B for a roof.
Anthony Franco
2:39
Yeah, I hate the stadium back-and-forth and can never really parse out what's PR for negotiations with the city vs. actual intent to move
2:40
And the moment, I'd lean towards the Rays being elsewhere by 2028. But I'd have said that about the A's six months ago and it now seems like they're trending towards sticking in Oakland, so I really don't know

Hi Anthony! New subscriber here. Thanks for the chat. Other than bullpen arms, what do you see as the Dodgers greatest need?
Anthony Franco
2:40
Appreciate you signing up!
2:42
Rotation help -- bringing back Kershaw ideally -- feels like the big thing. Maybe a complementary right-handed bat in the outfield, since Bellinger's a question mark and the bench skews a little left-handed. But I think that'd be more Kevin Pillar than Nick Castellanos
It’s not a chat without a Jo Adell trade
2:42
Jo Adell for Luis Urias and Eric Lauer
Anthony Franco
2:43
Ha, I'm not sure either team jumps on this one. Trading both those guys thins the Brewers rotation depth too much, but it feels like a bit of a sell-low from the Angels perspective given Adell's overall talent level
