If I settle on Biggio/Español as my 2b/utility infielder types how high would the AAV need to be to sign Kris Bryant as my 3b?  Can Bryant play 3b full time anymore?  I don't want to tie my IF spots up to long with Groshans and O Martinez coming on so strong do I?
Anthony Franco
2:44
Yeah he's still fine at third base, but we've got him signing a six-year deal, so it'd definitely be that kind of huge commitment you're saying the Jays would want to avoid
2:45
Maybe you push the salary and get him to take a higher AAV over four or five years, but I don't think he's going to settle for like 1/35 or anything like that
Crash
2:45
With all the defferal in salary the nats have, does this impact their ability to spend in the future?
Anthony Franco
2:46
Probably, does seem like they went for it late in the last decade and early in this one for a title at the expense of the late 2020's a bit
2:47
Which worked obviously. And Ted Lerner's 96 years old, so do it, absolutely. But I'd guess they eventually back up towards the 10-15 range in payroll when you set aside the deferrals

B martin, john king, good enough for D Smith or JDDavis
Anthony Franco
2:47
I don't think so

What do you folks project as the Tigers' actions after Miggy exceeds 3,000 hits?  As he already has more than 500 HR, and this is the last benchmark, will they ask him to retire, or simply keep him on the bench?
Anthony Franco
2:49
I don't think they'd ask him to retire. He's already said he wants to play two more years. But yeah, it does seem like we're heading towards some form of awkward resolution a la Pujols with the Angels after he gets to 500
2:50
They're trying to compete now. Torkelson's going to be up. I think they'd prefer to just make him an every other day kind of player, but it remains to be seen whether Cabrera would be cool with that

Any thoughts on ESPN’s Top 100 MLB Players of All Time list that just came out?
Anthony Franco
2:50
I haven't seen it, sorry
Rangers13
2:50
Wouldn’t Toronto and Mets match up as trade partners for texas in an IKF trade.
Anthony Franco
2:50
Sure, I could see the Jays having interest. Probably more so as a fallback if they miss out on a bigger impact player like Matt Chapman though

2:51
As a practical matter, won’t a CBA increase in the MLB minimum salary cause the salaries of second-year players to also increase, as well as third-year players, etc.?
Anthony Franco
2:51
That's kind of up for negotiation
2:52
MLB's proposals have set differing minimums for 0-1 players, 1-2 players and 2-3 guys, while the union just wants one number (read: a higher one) across the board
Either way, raising the minimum is going to push pre-arb salaries up, but it remains to be seen whether they'll be staggered by service like that

Is there any chance we get Ramon laureano? He seems great but what would it cost?
Anthony Franco
2:53
I'm pretty skeptical about Laureano going anywhere. I can't remember a player of that caliber getting traded while he's in the middle of a PED suspension, and he's within like one day of not accruing enough service time to get to free agency after 2024 as currently scheduled
2:54
He feels like a deadline trade candidate if he returns to form, but I think it's too complicated to move him before Opening Day
Bill
2:54
if, just for arguments sake, the current CBA rules as to “service time” remain unchanged post lockout, whom among Witt, Jr., Ruschman, Torkelson, Riley Greene, Julio Rodriguez, and Jeremy Pena do you see making their A.L. team’s opening day 26 man roster?
Anthony Franco
2:55
Witt only would be my guess
Zero incentive for the O's on Rutschman. Pena still hasn't played much at Triple-A. The Tigers guys are a tougher call but I lean more towards late April there

Brewers-D-Backs:                                   Adrian Houser, Garrett Mitchell OR Brice Turang and Antoine Kelly for Ketel Marte.                                     Fair value? Who says no?
Anthony Franco
2:56
Arizona says no

With Lorenzo Cain's injury issues over the past year plus, do the Brewers zig, when we thought they'd zag, and make Cain the primary DH, and then chase a CF replacement, perhaps Bryan Reynolds, Brandon Nimmo or (gulp) Joey Gallo? Assume Nimmo would be the cheapest to acquire, yes? I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Ketel Marte roaming CF in Milwaukee, but I think price is too rich.
Anthony Franco
2:57
Hmm, I don't see it. Doubt any of Marte, Reynolds or Nimmo get moved. I think Gallo's an interesting complement to Cain but at that point, Cain's probably getting most of the center field with Gallo in right and Renfroe at DH

Does state income tax have an impact on where a player signs/for how much? Seems like it should be a pretty huge difference in dollars between a $300 million contract over time from New York compared to Texas. I feel like that should be a factor but I never hear about it.
Anthony Franco
2:58
Yeah this definitely factors into the calculus
2:59
I think we don't hear about it a ton because 1) it's boring to discuss and 2) players often treat the top guarantee they're getting offered as having some form of intrinsic or symbolic meaning to Team X valuing them more than anyone else
3:00
So I could see situations where a guy takes a bigger guarantee that's actually slightly less in after-tax take home for that reason. But it's definitely a thing for agents to take into consideration and probably tips the scales in some instances

Response to Ranger above. Tim emailed and stated there has been a problem reported, he's looking into it. Just passing that along.

Glad to hear it

Just wanted to say I thought the Rockies piece you did was great! Any chance we'll see more teams covered in the same way?
Anthony Franco
3:02
Appreciate that! I could try to do a few more of that style of post, sure
3:04
There'll be some redundancy, particularly when it comes to pitching targets. Only one team can actually sign Chad Kuhl haha. But I think identifying areas of weakness on hopeful contenders and proposing some solutions makes sense. Glad people seem to have enjoyed it

Regarding Scott's question, the players "earn their salaries" and are paid in the location of the game played.  SO state income tax comes into play (no pun intended) where there game is .  Therefore only 50% of one's income is taxed in the higher-tax state if the player signed with the Yankees rather than the Rangers.

I forgot to mention this but this also true and a good point
