Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

Kyle Shwarber
2:20
Do I make sense as a dh for the dodgers if they Can’t sign Freeman
Anthony Franco
2:21
The corner outfield mix is already pretty crowded, and I'm guessing they'd rather rotate Muncy through DH (particularly with the elbow concerns) and get Gavin Lux some regular playing time
2:22
I could see it, since they have money and they take a general attitude of "get good players and figure it out later" but I think there are cleaner fits for Schwarber
Joe madden
2:22
What starting pitchers do you see us targeting once the lockout ends
Anthony Franco
2:22
(Angels)
2:23
I've said a few times I think the bigger concern is the middle infield. I'd guess maybe just a reliable innings, Michael Pineda type if they go back to the rotation well
Angels fan
2:23
What punishment will the other players who testified in the Tyler Skaggs trial face and C what punishment can the Angels team face
Anthony Franco
2:24
It seems like Matt Harvey's facing a suspension after admitting he gave Skaggs pills. The rest of the players involved are just going to be referred to a treatment board, unless they've previously been sanctioned for drug use
The Angels as an organization? Even MLB doesn't know that yet; they'll need to conduct a full investigation to determine who knew what was happening
Paul
2:24
How can mlb allow such a disparity between team payrolls where a guy like max sherzer makes more than a team like the pirates
Anthony Franco
2:24
I guess it depends on whose responsibility you think it is to fix that
2:25
The union would say it's the Pirates', that Bob Nutting can just spend more than he does and that's on him. The league would argue otherwise, but the MLBPA's not going to agree to a salary cap or a reduction of the luxury tax threshold
2:26
The league obviously has a revenue sharing system, but the MLBPA is of the mind that smaller-market owners don't reinvest that enough to actually help competitive balance or financial parity

2:26
Who will be my next SS and can you see me signing another big bat
Anthony Franco
2:26
(Angels again)
I think they should be in on Story but it seems likelier they'll look for an Ahmed-type stopgap
Feury
2:27
I am of the opinion that the Brewers should target Isaiah Kiner Falefa to play 3B regularly, spot start/3rd C/SS (when Urias starts at 3B) allowing Luis Urias to be the primary DH/Utility. Is there a fit there? Does Houser for IKF and Justin Foscue (or Aaron Zavala) work for both teams?
IKF
2:27
There's no chance I get traded now that Jung is hurt, right?
Anthony Franco
2:27
Yeah, I think Jung's injury pretty much kills the possibility of an IKF trade
2:28
I thought he'd get moved before that, but now it seems like he's just going to be their third baseman this year

2:28
If it's me I'd take the Rays FO/manager.
Anthony Franco
2:28
Yeah, the Neander/Cash pairing would definitely be in the top tier of candidates
Alan
2:28
Thx much for both the chats and the articles!  As a season ticket holder for a minor league team, I am curious if we will see any difference at this level. I realize no 40-man roster players, but beyond that it seems like things will be "normal". We are a High A team here.
Anthony Franco
2:29
Yeah I think it'll be pretty much status quo for you guys
Maybe there'll be renewed COVID concerns at some point, but I don't think the lockout will have any effect
Statcast
2:29
Did I (statcast) disrupt 50+ years of CBA and the current core economic system?  The MLBPA's forever mantra of "rising tides lists all boats" seems to have year and every year since ~ 2014 leaving more and more "boats" behind, first MLB middleclass and then pre-arb players.
Anthony Franco
2:30
I don't think it's about Statcast specifically. Batted ball or pitch metric data also got some guys paid beyond what they otherwise would've (Tyler Chatwood springs immediately to mind)
2:32
I do think the shrinking of the middle class was a key reason why we are where we are. I'd point more to WAR-type metrics that suggest those guys aren't as valuable as once believed, paired with improved player development techniques and a devaluing of the idea of "veteran presence"
2:33
In that sense, I think there were teams that looked at the market and said "why pay this 1.5 WAR player when we believe we can develop a 1 WAR player for 10% of the price"
And that dealt a blow to free agency the union's trying to recover from
Jeremy
2:33
Jays make 0 sense for Freeman yet do you think they will seriously be after him?
Anthony Franco
2:33
I do not
2:34
They have some money and Freeman's (kind of) Canadian
But like you said, they don't make a ton of sense from a roster perspective unless they're DHing Vlad Jr. full-time already. I think he lands elsewhere

2:34
I think Matt Olson would take two top 100 Braves prospects and a couple of B level prospects. does that sound close?  who?
Anthony Franco
2:35
Yeah I think that's the right kind of vicinity. Always tough to peg specific prospects since the A's will have different evaluations on these guys than public consensus
2:36
But guys like Michael Harris and Spencer Strider as headliners seem like they could be of interest
Jeremy
2:36
Do you see the Jays signing another big FA or trading for a big name IF or SP. They've already gotten 2 picks from Ray and Semien leaving so a trading some prospects is okay
Anthony Franco
2:36
I think they really could go either way and will actively explore both
They're probably my pick for Matt Chapman if he moves, but if they signed Kris Bryant instead, I wouldn't at all be surprised
