Apparently teams and players will be meeting every day until (at least) Feb. 28.  I mean, anything less than that would be foolish, right?
Anthony Franco
2:37
I guess but the substance of the conversation matters a lot more than the frequency of the meetings

Brewer trade Hader next offseason... could it be Ashby that takes over, instead of Devin Williams? Would help create room for Ethan Small in the rotation with the Big 3 and Lauer, no?
Anthony Franco
2:38
Sure, it seems like the prospect community is kind of split on Ashby as a traditional starter vs. multi-inning relief weapon. I think he'd thrive in the latter role but would be tempted to give him a shot as a starter first

I read an article in the athletic the other day that said the MLB is the only pro sports league that has an antitrust exemption. How does this affect what the league actually does? I don't really understand it
Anthony Franco
2:38
Don't believe it has a ton of affect at the big league level, since the MLB - MLBPA relationship is collectively bargained
2:39
It's more relevant in the minors, where things like salaries below the minimum wage and unilateral axing of teams would be harder to pull off
2:40
Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post covered the exemption and the latest in a never-ending stream of lawsuits to get it overturned last month

2:40
What the return for a Glasnow/Meadows package?
Anthony Franco
2:40
Together, I think those guys could bring back a couple well-regarded prospects or controllable MLB relievers
2:41
Centering a deal for both Meadows/Glasnow on a prospect at the back half of the top 100 (with a couple additional pieces) feels about right to me

Just to give fans a larger financial context, do you know how long the average MLB player's career lasts and what is the average MLB player's total career earnings?
Anthony Franco
2:42
Travis Sawchik researched this a couple years ago and found that the average active player had around 3.71 years of service, down about a year relative to 2005
He also broke down career earnings by service bucket. Not sure if there's any public research that's more recent than that

Does the fact that the White Sox didn't give Carlos Rodon a qualifying offer concern you at all? I feel like that should've been a no brainer
Anthony Franco
2:43
It was a real surprise. Moderately concerning, particularly in conjunction with them exercising Kimbrel's option
2:44
Which suggested they had a similar amount of payroll space but preferred to allocate it to Kimbrel over Rodón. Even if the plan was later just to trade Kimbrel, it was an eyebrow-raising move

2:44
Weird question here but why are salaries written with two "M"'s after the number? Why $5MM instead of $5M
Anthony Franco
2:44
I have no idea if this is true but this website says it's rooted in Roman numerals
2:45
M = 1,000
M*M = 1,000,000
Tim included in the MLBTR style guide that we use two M's for what it's worth

After the CBA is agreed to, a) how long will the player ratification and owner concurrence take, and b) for when would the Rule 5 draft be rescheduled?
Anthony Franco
2:46
I doubt it'd take more than a day or two to get everything signed once it's all agreed upon, especially since they'll be motivated to get the ball rolling
On the Rule 5, I have no idea. But it has to happen relatively quickly because it obviously doesn't work if you do it after the season starts

2:46
Who could use Jeff McNeil and what would the return be? Adecent starter maybe?
Anthony Franco
2:47
White Sox, Angels and Blue Jays make the most sense as far as teams that could use a second baseman
2:48
I do think a solid starter with a similar window of control makes sense, although I don't know that any of those three teams are in position to make that kind of move specifically

2:48
All the focus and fuss from the media is on 1B when it comes to the Brewers... but wouldn't it make more sense to get a regular CF, or 3B, allowing Lorenzo Cain, or Luis Urias, to DH more? Cain's bat is still solid, but the injuries come from playing CF the way he does, and Urias improved greatly at the dish last season, but the glove could be better. Maybe Corey Dickerson from the UFAs?
Anthony Franco
2:48
Corey Dickerson can't play CF
2:49
I think you're right about CF being an area they could explore an upgrade -- I'd just leave Urías at third base -- but it's a pretty terrible offseason to be looking for one of those
2:50
Starling Marte was the only good option in free agency, and the trade market might just be Kiermaier

2:50
I read that the owners revenue is up 25 percent since the last agreement 6 years ago and they also stand to make and extra 100 million from the expanded playoffs yet they do not seem to be willing to share hardly any of that with the players. What they are paying the players  in the minor leagues is shameful. It looks like they are going to start canceling regular season games to try and get the players to cave in to their demands. If that happens it seems to me a lot of us fans will not be going to the ball parks this year but maybe the owners do not care as long as they get the TV money. What do you think?
Anthony Franco
2:52
Yeah I really don't know how many fans they'll lose if the lockout lingers. The answer can't be zero, but there'll be a lot of people who also a) blame the players for the work stoppage instead but still quit the sport or b) don't care about the delay and will be happy to go to games because they like to bring the family to the park on a summer afternoon and relax for a few hours
2:53
As for your second point, I think it's clear that owners value the TV revenue far more than they value in-person attendance. Fear of pissing off their TV partners might be a greater motivation for them getting a CBA done than would be the thought they can alienate some fans

2:53
In your opinion, where will Freddy Freeman sign? Does he go back to Atlanta, or somewhere else?
Anthony Franco
2:53
I've always been of the (minority) opinion that he was more likely to leave than return to Atlanta
2:54
I picked the Red Sox entering the offseason. There was no indication they were interested. So if I were starting over I'd probably say the Dodgers, but for consistency's sake I'll stick with Boston until they officially prove me wrong
