Given the owners have billions, besides the billions they already have, they can't find their way to raising the minimum wage to over $700,000 ( I forget the exact figure). Is this really that much of a sticking point. Those kids deserve that kind of start in the big leagues.
Anthony Franco
2:56
The unwillingness to bend on the league minimum is pretty irritating. I get why they don't want revenue sharing cuts or broader arb, but as you said, the proposed minimum increases are a drop in the bucket relative to their overall spending levels

Toronto- Gausman is no replacement for Ray. He is poised to go backward...in my opinion. (Maybe I'm still remembering the Baltimore years)
Anthony Franco
2:56
He's definitely better than he was in Baltimore, but I agree that Ray's the better pitcher
Steve and Tim disagree with that
Or at least they did at the start of the offseason
I assume they still do
2:57
Gausman's a more consistent strike-thrower, but Ray feels like the higher upside play given the elite swing-and-miss stuff

John Means...who has the best chance of nabbing him in a trade.
Anthony Franco
2:57
Twins?
2:58
Giants, Rangers, Mariners, Braves, Mets, White Sox are among the other teams I could see trading for a starter, but the Twins absolutely have to do something about the rotation

AU timeline... Oakland owner John Fisher watches "Major League" the night after the lockout ends and the new CBA is ratified. He walks into Beane's office the next morning and says "Here's an extra $50 MM, let's win the whole f-ning thing." What moves does Beane make?
Anthony Franco
2:59
Probably make a run at Story and one of the free agent outfielders (Castellanos, Suzuki, etc.)
3:00
Then roll the dice on a couple relievers and some low-cost rotation depth

What prospect do you think will be #1 at this time next year?
Anthony Franco
3:01
I think I answered this last week in either the main chat or the FO one but Noelvi Marte's my pick
Coco Laboy
3:01
It would be nice and all but the Jays don't really need a 5th starter do they? Stripling, Pearson, Hatch, Logue, etc...
Anthony Franco
3:01
Feels like more of a luxury than a need, I agree
3:02
Wouldn't surprise me if they just added a Matt Moore type on a minor league deal as depth and prioritized the infield/bullpen
Paul
3:03
Should I be worried about Trouts health. He is having his share of injuries
Anthony Franco
3:03
They've all been unrelated to date, which I think is a good sign
That the calf just basically never progressed last year is a little alarming, but I wouldn't say I'm worried yet

3:04
First MASSIVE move after the lockout ends is....?
Anthony Franco
3:04
Probably Freeman signing somewhere
3:05
It seems like he's holding up a first base market that has a lot of other potential moving parts (Rizzo in free agency, Olson/Voit in trade). I think teams will be motivated to move on that ASAP so they can determine whether they're allocating big payroll or prospect capital to that posiiton
3:06

Braves need a SP (Greinke?), a 1B (Frederick or Olson?) a lefty bench sub (Brad Miller?) and bullpen stud (McHugh?).  Am I missing anything?
Anthony Franco
3:07
That's more than I expect them to do given where their current spending level lies, but they're all sensible enough moves in isolation
I think it's more likely they sign someone like Greinke and Rizzo or just Freeman

With the lack of progress on financial matters, is there any hope for items to enhance the games for fans such as better replay technology, eliminating or severely modifying the runner on second debacle or even the DH?
Anthony Franco
3:08
DH feels like it's happening. Don't think there's any discussion on replay, I'd guess we return to pre-pandemic rules on the extra inning thing but it has been oddly quiet on that front
I certainly hope they scrap the extra inning runner, or at least delay it an inning or two rather than diving right into it in the tenth

3:09
Considering how quickly everyone is going to want to get signed after the lockout, do you see a lot of one year deals?
Anthony Franco
3:09
I think the bulk of the mid-tier guys who might've gotten squeezed from two years to one signed before the lockout
Carlos Correa and Freddie Freeman are going to be fine
3:10
Tommy Pham was going to get one year anyways
3:11
Maybe there's a couple guys in that gray area -- Eddie Rosario, Ryan Tepera, Joc Pederson, etc. -- who miss out on a chance at two, but I think the bulk of that type of player jumped at solid offers if they were available in November

Just circling back to my question from last week as to why a year of service was ever agreed to equal 172 days, instead of something like the actual number of days (186) in a season? I've wondered if changing that could serve as a springboard to the owners accepting 5 yr free agency - along with several major concessions from the players, like arb after 3 and 4 yrs only and accepting (mostly) the owners numbers on the big stuff.
Anthony Franco
3:11
Yeah, I looked into this and found absolutely nothing, sorry
3:12
No idea when they even started calculating a full year as 172 days, much less why
