Arizona has basically shown no inclination to let Marte go, and they're not rebuilding. They'll listen to offers as diligence, but I think you'd have to have one of Moreno or Orelvis Martínez in the deal to start with

Drew Rasmussen.  How good is he?
Anthony Franco
2:45
Solid multi-inning reliever. Don't think he's a true starter based on the injury history and inconsistent control
Just tough to count on a guy like that (already has two Tommy John surgeries in his career) throwing 140+ innings annually
2:47
But he throws really hard with a wicked slider, and he had success late last year turning lineups over a second time. So I buy him as a good 2-3 inning guy the Rays are really good at deploying situationally

Barring the necessity due to injury, which Ranger Prospects beyond Winn, Huff (2nd Debut) and Jung late in the year perhaps do you see making MLB debuts this season?
Anthony Franco
2:47
Josh Smith's the only one of the guys near the top of the system I expect to see this year
Besides the guys you mentioned in the question
2:48
Think Leiter, Foscue, Ezequiel Duran are all more likely to be 2023 calls

Among Kershaw, Jansen, Joe Kelly, how would you rank the chances of the Dodgers re-signing them?
Anthony Franco
2:48
Kershaw, Kelly, Jansen
I'd take the Dodgers over the field on the first two, think it's likelier Jansen leaves
Artie moreno
2:49
why am I vetoing the latest mlb proposal for the threshold on luxury tax
Anthony Franco
2:49
Moreno also was among the four owners (as were Kendrick and Castellini) who voted against Steve Cohen's approval as Mets owner -- presumably out of fear that Cohen would spend at the kind of levels he has this winter
2:50
He was one of the earliest owners to furlough employees during the COVID season, and he hasn't paid the luxury tax himself in almost two decades
2:52
He signs stars and the Angels have decent payrolls year after year (as they should as a team in that market). But Moreno also seems atypically choosy about what he considers justifiable spending, and he seems opposed to going beyond the CBT thresholds himself
If he's not going to do it, he'd prefer no one does
Arise, Sir Loin of Beef
2:52
How much of the MLB's refusal to negotiate the CBT is about Steve Cohen?
Anthony Franco
2:52
I think Cohen's a real concern for guys like Moreno who were already predisposed to want to keep the CBT low
2:53
I'm skeptical of the idea that Cohen flipped many owners who weren't already leaning towards approaching these negotiations with a real hawkish mentality

What will it cost me to trade for one of the reds pitchers
Anthony Franco
2:53
(Another Angels question)
2:54
Depends on the pitcher. I think on Castillo and Mahle, the Reds could justifiably ask for someone like Adell or Detmers as a headliner
I'd be willing to move Detmers personally, but I'm lower on him than consensus
2:55
Gray shouldn't cost as much in a vacuum, although it's hard to line anything up there because the Angels system is so bad
2:56
I doubt they'd give up Detmers for Gray, but Cincinnati should be able to do better than Sam Bachman or Arol Vera as a headliner somewhere else

2:56
Do you think there's any truth to what Bill Madden reported about it being Scott Boras' fault the CBA was rejected by the players this week?
Anthony Franco
2:56
I do not

I have read on your site that Rob Manfred cannot be fired.  Are you simply saying the owners will never do it.  Or is that a feature of his contract?  I join many in feeling Manfred has no real interest in the players, and even less in the fans.  I ask about the contract because many years ago Wm. Eckert was relieved of his position as commissioner.
Anthony Franco
2:57
I don't recall seeing anything that says he can't be fired
The owners extended him through 2024 a couple years ago. I'm guessing they could fire him with full pay through then at any point if they'd like
There's no reason for them to do so

If the Cards signed Correa, would they have the best defensive infield in the league? Ever?
Anthony Franco
2:58
Ha I have no idea about all-time, but yeah, it'd pretty clearly be the best on paper group in 2022

What impact does the lockout have on the National TV contracts?  Do the owners get paid regardless?  Or do they only get paid if games are actually played.  If the owners don't get paid, wouldn't it make sense for the players to sit out the year to make it as painful as possible for the owners even though it would be painful for the players?  As much as we'd all hate to see that, it might be the only way to get a fair deal.  There has to be a tipping point where the pain shifts more from the players to the owners and the playoffs seem to be the key for the owners.
Anthony Franco
2:59
I don't know exactly when they'd start feeling the heat on national TV deals (don't believe those terms have been reported publicly)
But I can't imagine ESPN and FOX are going to pay anything near full-price if those games don't happen

With all of Seattle's "Proven Closers"™ — Giles, Castillo, Steckenrider, Sewald, etc.— will manager Scott Servais pick-and-choose or name a prime closer?
Anthony Franco
3:00
I think it'll be Steckenrider to start with a good chance that Giles takes over at some point
