Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

Reports at the time of his injury suggested June or July as a possible return date. I haven't seen anything to suggest that's changed. I think it's viable he could return after the All-Star Break, but there's enough uncertainty the Braves can't bank on anything from him
2:31
If he comes back and looks like his pre-injury self, great. But Soroka shouldn't stop them from adding a starting pitcher at the trade deadline or anything

The Padres are 5-3 but it doesn't feel sustainable. What is one move they can still pull off this month to keep them on point?
Anthony Franco
2:32
I disagree this isn't sustainable. The Padres are good. I don't think they're going to do anything notable in the first couple weeks of the season, teams don't behave like that
2:33
They could still sign Yusmiero Petit or Tony Watson to add bullpen depth or something, but I don't expect a blockbuster trade for a shortstop or left fielder any time soon

Marathon games increase injury risk to MLB players and cause promotion for AAA players who wouldn’t be otherwise promoted. If we want the best players in the game to be on the field for the whole season, then we should support the ghost runner rather than “tradition.”
Anthony Franco
2:34
I think we're just going to disagree on this one. Injuries happen, and again, I think you can kill marathon games by doing this in the 12th
2:35
I don't like it in the tenth, but it's not the end of the world. I do think you'll get your way and it's here for good
Oakland
2:35
way too early to make real judgment but how are my a’s lookin??
Anthony Franco
2:36
Impressive start for those guys. They've played well. I don't think the A's are actually going to be good this year, but credit to them for what they've done so far

The Minnesota Twins are a complete and total repeat of last year. Sure it's early but they can't hit their way out of a cardboard box and the bullpen is just as crappy as last season. Correa has to be wondering why the hell he signed with these sand lot losers.
Anthony Franco
2:37
It has been six games

The Jays trading Randall Grichick, in the rear view mirror, looks a bit mis-guided? what they see (or saw) in Tapia looks not so good. He was not great in the Yankees series. Grichuk could play right, Springer stays at center and Gurriel (not so great himself) could stay in left. I don't really know what they saw in Tapia. Atkins choked on this one.
Anthony Franco
2:37
Same caveat with Tapia. I don't care that he's been bad for four games
2:38
That said, I agree with you that I wouldn't have made that trade as the Jays
2:39
They presumably think Tapia and Grichuk are similarly valuable overall players. Tapia hits left-handed and makes more contact, and there's a certain stylistic diversity compared to their starting outfield that they seemed to prefer with their fourth outfielder over Grichuk's power-based, low OBP game
2:40
I think Josh Palacios, who they lost on waivers to the Nationals today, could've just done what they want Tapia to be for cheaper. Grichuk's a flawed player, to be sure, but I'd rather have him and Palacios than Tapia

2:40
who is the most likely player to sign an in season big extension with their team?
Anthony Franco
2:41
Hmm, interesting question. Dansby Swanson maybe?
2:42
He's got ties to the Atlanta area, so maybe he takes a bit less to stay there. The Braves haven't been afraid to work out extensions with some impending free agents midseason
2:43
Swanson would be a much bigger investment than 2/16 for Travis d'Arnaud and 1/20 for Charlie Morton, but I could see him signing an extension

2:43
Does Montas get moved from the AS break?
Anthony Franco
2:43
I don't think so
2:44
Most of the top guys on the market every year stick around until the week before the deadline

Do you think the Mets will extend Nimmo?
Anthony Franco
2:45
I'd be surprised on Nimmo. He said a couple times this spring that he was open to extension talks but they apparently didn't approach him

do you think Aaron Judge over estimated his value in today's climate. even that big numbers were paid out to some proven players in 2022 and that same monies weren't there for some FA players. do you think turning down this contract will come to bite him in the ass?
Anthony Franco
2:46
If you set the over/under on the actual guarantee Judge receives in free agency at $213MM, I'd take the under
2:47
So in that sense, I guess you could say my answer to your question is yes. I think the Yankees make a perfectly fair offer
That said, Judge has already banked quite a bit of money in salary. I'm sure he's raked in a lot via endorsements as a superstar for the biggest franchise in the sport. He's not hurting for money
2:49
So if he wants to set a demand that the Yankees would never meet (as he reportedly did at like 8/288), he's in position to do that
2:50
I don't think he's getting there or especially close. Rendon money (7/245) feels like a ceiling to me. But he's made enough to bet on himself, and some guys just want to go through the experience of being courted by a bunch of teams. He's earned that

What is the commissioner waiting for with Bauer. If he is cleared we can use him
Anthony Franco
2:51
I have no idea

2:51
what’s the market for Conforto?
Anthony Franco
2:53
It doesn't seem especially robust. I thought he had a shot at like 4/75 coming into the offseason, but I'd set the O/U now at like 1/15

Vladdy and Arenado the WAY too early MVPs?
Anthony Franco
2:53
Too early to have that debate. They've both been awesome so far and they're incredible players, so I could see them being in the mix, sure

What Pittsburgh is doing right now seems to be the right way of doing things. Am I dreaming here or is it true the Pirates don't have to go through another 20 straight years of losing again. How safe is Derek Shelton?
Anthony Franco
2:55
Cherington has a proven track record of building from the ground up in Boston. I think a lot of the foundational moves they've laid in Pittsburgh and their philosophy to the draft are very encouraging
