Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Anthony Franco

I think he's a good pitcher, just in a kind of atypical sense since they're basically never letting him see a lineup a third time
4:16
On the injured guys, Baz recently returned to throwing live BP's. Haven't seen anything new on the other two

After last year, we Jays fans said we never wanted to hear "it's still early" again. We are hearing it from the team now. Should the Jays take any pre-emptive action? If so, what would be available now instead of at the trade deadline? Or, just live with the cards dealt and hope for the best?
Anthony Franco
4:18
Yeah, I think it's mostly the latter. Just going to have to wait for Bichette to come around, getting Teoscar back so you can stop playing Tapia should help. Chapman's offensive concerns were pretty easy to see coming, but the defense is still going to keep him in the lineup even if he can't hit
4:19
To the extent I'm concerned about the Jays, it's that Berríos has been weirdly bad so far. I don't like Kikuchi nearly as much as they do, and Stripling's meh. So I'm a bit worried about the rotation depth, but that's not really anything you can fix right now

I don’t understand why Joe Maddon gave Mike Trout the day off on Wednesday. I know they have a schedule for his off days but this game should have been an exception. Trout is locked in right now and McClanahan is an extremely tough lefty. Why take the best right handed bat out of the lineup when the next day is a scheduled off day. Your thoughts ?
Anthony Franco
4:20
I think it's ok. Keeping Trout healthy is the most important thing the Angels can do this season. If they feel this kind of strict regimented off day set-up is the best way to do that, then stick to it

If you had your choice of two of these players which two would you select and why. Luis Urias, Brendan Rodgers, Gavin Lux, KeBryan Hayes, & Gleyber Torres.
Anthony Franco
4:21
Taking this from a real life perspective, not fantasy, and setting aside contracts -- give me Hayes and Lux
4:22
Ke'Bryan's glove is awesome and is just going to make him a ten-year starter even if he's like an average hitter. Lux vs. Urías was tough but I'm a little more confident in Lux's strike zone control
4:23
I'd have Gleyber a tick behind those guys based on the lack of defensive value, Rodgers an easy #5 because of all the strikeouts
Brian
4:23
Do you anticpate more trades in the next 30-45 days than usual?
Anthony Franco
4:24
Not really. I thought we might get a flurry of minor moves on active roster cut day and it didn't happen

Have you noticed teams using the injured list more frequently now on "out of option" players?  It seems, most players have enough bumps and bruises to sit on the injury list for a couple of weeks (particularly if they aren't playing well).
Anthony Franco
4:24
This probably happens -- Ryan Borucki jumped out as a possible example when I saw this question -- but I don't know if it's any more prevalent this year than in past seasons. I don't see why it would be
Cano
4:25
Cano to the padres?!?! No way he is still there at the the deadline. Tatis, Kim, Machado, Cronenworth, Hosmer, Profar, and even Nola can all play the infield.
Anthony Franco
4:25
Yeah I don't love it. They're looking for cheap offense, and if they think he can still hit then I guess go for it?
4:26
But I don't share that optimism and wouldn't really want to give him 50-100 plate appearances to try to figure it out
Juan Yepez
4:26
Am I going to keep up my hot start?
Anthony Franco
4:27
He clearly has power but I think he's going to be one of those low-OBP boppers that generally settles in as a fourth outfield type
Brian
4:27
With most of the Giants injured players coming back, not sure how much longer they can keep Mauricio Dubon.  Does he have any value?
Anthony Franco
4:28
Not a ton. I think he'd get claimed off waivers if it got to that point and maybe they could recoup a minor prospect (probably at the level of Prelander Berroa, who they gave up for Donnie Walton yesterday) via trade
But it's not going to be anything especially notable if he gets squeezed out. It does seem like we're nearing that point

25 year old Joey Bart (.167/.315/.333) has only 73 PA but his K = 47%, wRC =8….He has minor league options. How long before I need to find a new catcher?
Anthony Franco
4:30
Should probably be bugging Jed Hoyer about Willson Contreras already
4:31
I don't think you're going to find a better catcher than Bart on waivers or anything, but that looks like an obvious area for a trade deadline improvement (even if just a rental) to me
Brian
4:31
Hi Anthony,  If the Red Sox continue to play the way they are, doesn't Kike seem like a SF type of player?
Anthony Franco
4:31
Kind of but I wonder if they'd find him redundant to Dubón and Estrada
Kirt
4:31
Who is the odd man out when the Rays call up Josh Lowe?
Anthony Franco
4:32
Eventually probably Brett Phillips but right now the odd man out is Josh Lowe
4:33
Lowe has 17 strikeouts in 28 plate appearances since being sent back to Durham. He's nowhere close to getting called back up right now
Duffy
4:33
Right now, the Blue Jays would make the playoffs. Do you think there’s any chance the trade market could be affected, particularly in the AL, as to whether any players are unvaccinated and would have to sit out if a series went to Toronto? Or even for teams that have to play in Toronto towards the end of the regular season (Angels, Rays, Yankees, etc)? Do other teams have access to that information before a trade is made?
Anthony Franco
4:34
Other teams do know this stuff, yeah. Will it have any effect on the midseason trade market? I doubt it
Obviously, the Jays aren't going to trade for a player who's not vaccinated (unless the Canadian government changes its policy in the next few months)
4:35
For other teams, maybe it's a small consideration but it feels a little too cute and presumptuous to assume you might run into Toronto at some point during the postseason
Eddie
4:35
Who do you feel will be the top five starting pitching prospects...not yet called up...at the end of this season?
Anthony Franco
4:37
Hmm, I'd need more time to have a definitive top five but Jack Leiter, Andrew Painter and Jackson Jobe all jump out as possibilities for this
4:39
Gunnar Hoglund's probably not getting there this year coming off TJ but will eventually, I think. I love Tanner Burns and while he's probably a longshot to get to this level, it wouldn't shock me either
Brew Crew
4:39
Brewers have some holes in their defense & offense. Where do you think they should upgrade? And who do you think they could realistically acquire to fill the hole(s)?
Anthony Franco
4:40
The lineup has mostly been good except for center field, where there's not really an obvious solution. Maybe they should upgrade over McCutchen as a righty-hitting outfield option?
