Kirk for Killian and Alzolay from the Cubs? Who says no and why? The Cuba have about 10 guys on their 40 man who are number 4 or 5 starters. That is a lot of depth and resigning Smyly makes me think there must be a trade coming.

That's a hard pass by the Jays.  That Cubs offer just isn't close in my opinion.
I don't think that'd even get them two years of Danny Jansen.

Thanks for the chat.  Do you have any prediction on if the Bauer suspension is reduced?  It's a lot longer than any previous suspension, but he's had several accusers come forward, so it's unprecedented.  If it's upheld, do you see the Dodgers spending more?
Tim Dierkes
"The arbitrator’s decision is expected no earlier than next month," which means this month

Shaikin also wrote, "However, [Bauer] has filed defamation lawsuits against his accuser and five other parties, so any team that might be interested in employing him might well have to consider whether the possibility of years of legal proceedings would be a deterrent."

I assume MLB will drop in the news/results of the appeal without warning.  They have certainly buried things on Friday afternoons in the past, and this Friday or Dec 30 would be a good time to have fewer people paying attention to sports news.  The Super Bowl is Feb 12, they could drop it in there.  That all assumes that MLB considers whatever the arbitrator decides to be bad and worth burying, which is not necessarily the case since they don't control it.
This is an uncomfortable thing to speculate on though.  My guess is that the suspension gets reduced to some degree.

Minnesota has gone to scraping the bottom of the heap, just like always. Do player just not want to play in Minnesota. It seems to me with the change in the ownership chair the Falvey-Levine regime has been a failure (except for the 2019 outlier) and there needs to be a change there.

I mean, they have to make competitive offers to have a chance with free agents.  Their best known offer to Correa just wasn't competitive.  Doesn't have anything to do with the location of the team.  I haven't read anything on their best offer to Dansby.
It's been over six years with this front office, so yeah, they've had a lot of leeway for sure.

Who do you think is the Yankees opening day left fielder?
Tim Dierkes
10:13
AJ Pollock?

what are the Red Sox doing?   are they trying to rebuild the entire roster? I can see Justin Turner signing as a trade for Devers, which would leave none of the core team remaining. They didn't make the team better in the offseason, besides the bullpen. Hitting is much worse.   What do you think?
Tim Dierkes
10:14
From what I've read the Red Sox intend to use JT as a DH and to play 1B against tough lefties.  I don't really see it having anything to do with Devers.
10:15
If I'm Devers, I'm going to the open market unless the Red Sox offer me something ridiculous, which they have generally not done with their guys.
10:16
Maybe Bogaerts stings so much that this spring ownership just says "screw it" and backs up the truck for Devers.  Hard to say if they stick with their pattern, or break it.

Tim Dierkes and staff, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, thanks for all the GREAT ARTICLES and juicy gossip.

Long time reader. First time subscriber. Love what you do! As a Cubs fan, I'm excited to see the Cubs spending more, but it feels like the overall changes haven't been improvements. Swanson was a nice pick up, but the lineup still lost Contrares' bat. I don't see the offense being that much better in 2023. Feels like 2023 is going to be another rebuilding year, no?
Tim Dierkes
10:17
I think they've raised the floor a bit with Dansby and Taillon.  Up the middle defense is legitimately good now.  But yeah, the offense is suspect and the pitching staff is a collection of #3-4 starters.  There are worse things, but barring more major additions (which I do not expect), this doesn't look like a playoff team.

Santa Claus offers you box seats to any ballpark, which city would you pick?
Tim Dierkes
10:18
I've yet to visit Fenway so I think that'd be it.

Does Fried make it to FA, or do the Braves extend him? Their history with Freddie and Dansby don’t inspire confidence.
Tim Dierkes
10:19
My best guess is he makes it to FA and signs elsewhere.  Again, it's similar to that Red Sox thing: does the pattern and bad PR get so tiresome that they break it, or do they stay committed to what they think is right?

Victor Robles and Kyle Finnegan to the Red Sox for Jarren Duran and Bobby Dalbec. Who says no?
Tim Dierkes
10:20
The Red Sox would say no.  Duran as of a year ago was a 55 grade prospect.  He's 26 years old and while he has not hit in 335 PA in the Majors, I don't think they're writing him off.
10:21
Don't get me wrong - I think Dalbec gets traded, and Duran is possible, but not for those guys.

What do you envision is on Preller's Christmas wish list for the remainder of the offseason?
Tim Dierkes
10:22
I could see them on Nathan Eovaldi, having missed out on Bassitt.  Also, is this the year Preller finally reunites with Nelson Cruz??
Plus it'll probably kill him to see Profar leave.

With Benintendi off the market, do you anticipate the Yankees will shift to the trade market or roll with in house options? If a trade, who do you see as the most likely target? Kepler? Varsho?
Tim Dierkes
10:25
I know I said Pollock earlier, but with a luxury tax payroll of 293 mil or so, going cheaper on the trade market does make sense.  I could see Varsho or McCarthy here.  Thomas, less so since he hasn't hit in the Majors yet.

Will the Phillies trade Hoskins?  And what bullpen arms should they target?
Tim Dierkes
10:26
I don't see much reason to trade Hoskins this winter.  I know he's going into his walk year, but he's a good piece to have on a win-now team.  Relief market is thinning out but Ottavino did have a really good year.

Brian Reynolds to Dodgers for Pages Busch Pepiot Vargas.  Who says no?
Tim Dierkes
10:28
Can I just say, I think Bryan Reynolds might be a tad overrated?  He is really good, but he's not a superstar.  And he probably belongs in an OF corner.
I think the Pirates have (possibly unintentionally) given off this impression that they want a Juan Soto deal for Reynolds, and his apparent unattainability makes him seem better than he really is.
10:29
I don't know what it would take to get Reynolds, but the Dodgers decimating their farm system and giving up four 55-grade guys for three years of him would be insane.

Seattle POBO Jerry Dipoto keeps saying they want a RH hitting outfielder to platoon with Kelenic "so as not to expose him to lefty pitching" (which just grates on me, but that's for another day).  What kind of moves do you see them making to address this, or any other moves for them for that matter?  Thanks for all you and the guys do.
