Trade Rumors Front Office Chat With Tim Dierkes

AJ Pollock, Robbie Grossman, and Wil Myers would be some decent matches for such a goal.  And that player could plug in at DH at times as well.    I figure they'll trade Flexen at some point but the team is looking pretty complete.

Are the Rangers looking for another starter
Tim Dierkes
10:36
Currently sets up as deGrom, Martin Perez, Gray, Heaney, Odorizzi, and Dunning.  I think they're mostly done, and a good FA starter might not want to go there unless they agree up front to boot Odo from the rotation or go to a six-man.  Certainly, they could trade for a guy though.
To your point, I think given health risk of at least deGrom and Heaney, another arm would be good.  It's not like they're getting through the season with those six.  But I do not think it's a current priority.

I'm a poor single father and it's hard to justify paying for the front office bit, however, you certainly go out of your way to make sure I feel like I get my money's worth! Just wanted to let you know that I truly appreciate your work and if I have to choose between my front office subscription and the athletic subscription I'm certainly staying with the mlbtr!  I think that says alot cause the athletic is great but, you guys do more for me pound for pound! Thank you again for all your tireless, hard work

Ah man, that sucks.  Drop me an email at membership@traderumors.com and we will figure something out.  I appreciate all of you but if money is tight, you should use it elsewhere.
And FWIW, I am a fan of The Athletic!

Do the Braves have any trade chips left, re: Bryan Reynolds? He'd be a good fit in LF.
Tim Dierkes
10:40
I don't know their farm system super well, but per MLB.com they've got five 50-grade guys.  Three of those are nowhere near the Majors; not sure if the Pirates would go for that.  Vaughn Grissom would be an interesting Reynolds headliner.  Guys like Mike Soroka and Ian Anderson would probably interest the Pirates as secondary pieces.
10:41
I've seen so many trades of the years where an established Major Leaguer was traded for prospects, and I'm like "who?" Teams often don't line up with public prospect rankings, so I'm hesitant to say that the Braves couldn't get another major trade doine.

Do you predict any "surprise" moves by the Dodgers or are they done for now?
Tim Dierkes
10:42
I think some relief help and a veteran OF would make sense.  But maybe this really is the year where they're going to try to let some kids play and get established.  They've got so much young talent.

Easy to say that the NL and AL Central are the weakest divisions in MLB still?
Tim Dierkes
10:42
Yeah, I'd sign off on that.

Good morning Tim, and thanks for doing this.  Do you folks have any sense of what the Yankees are planning to do with Matt Carpenter?  And what do you forsee for A.J. Pollack and David Peralta?  Again, thanks.
Tim Dierkes
10:44
I think with Stanton clogging up DH, a full IF, and likely little desire to see Carp in the OF, there's just not a spot for him.  I figure someone will take like a 6-8 mil flyer on Carp to take most of their DH ABs, at least against RH pitching, and that won't be the Yankees.
10:45
Actually think Carp is a nice fit for the Cubs as a Matt Mervis complement.
Starting to think Pollock can match the 8 mil he turned down, just because the OF market was and is thin and he can still hit LH and play a little CF.
10:47
Peralta I think still plays good LF defense and can hit RH pitching, so he should get a solid one-year deal somewhere.

Are my Tigers so screwed between bad free agent signings and an underperforming farm system that Scott Harris has inherited a hot mess and needs a season to assess what talent his club has, or is there some hope for us long-suffering fans>
Tim Dierkes
10:49
With the Boyd and Lorenzen signings, Harris seems to be emulating Farhan Zaidi.  It's easy to see the Tigers taking a Farhan-like approach to FA (minus the Correa splash) for the next few years.
10:50
Payroll in Detroit is basically just Baez and E-Rod as of 2024, so Harris has kind of a blank slate when it comes to signing free agents.
Heading into his age 31 season, will E-Rod opt out of his remaining three years and 49 mil?
10:52
If he can put up 160 innings of 4.00 ERA-ish ball this year, and I think he can, opting out is is a pretty good call when Taillon and Taijuan got 4/70-72.  If E-Rod's Ks return to pre-2022 levels, then he may be perceived as having more upside than they did.  The market for mid-tier SP moved this winter, and there's a fair chance he takes advantage of that.
10:54
Even Baez opting out of 4/98 in advance of age 31 - seems unlikely with the season he had, but it's completely out of the question with a good year.
10:55
But yes, to your question, 2023 is definitely a consolidation year after so many players disappointed.  Some will bounce back, some will not, and Harris will have a much clearer picture.
Thank you for the chat!
10:55
Reynolds to NYY for Peraza + Schmidt + two top 10-20 NYY prospects. Would this get Pirates attention?
Tim Dierkes
10:55
I think it should.  Not sure if all the rumors of them asking for the moon are correct.

10:55
Any news on Conforto?
Tim Dierkes
10:56
Just what's on the site.  I could see that getting done before Christmas.  Fast-moving market this winter.

Do you think the WSox go after another outfielder in the trade market?
Tim Dierkes
10:56
No, I think they want Colas to be the RF, have Sheets hanging around, and could select Victor Reyes' contract as backup.

10:56
No question. Just a big thanks for the Arizona outfielders breakdown.

You're welcome!

Feel like we are at a point where it feels like the Twins front office really doesn't have a plan. Its been 6 years, what progress at major league level and minor league development validates them staying around?
Tim Dierkes
10:57
I'm sure we could parse all their moves and find some gems in there, but that's true of most GMs with a six-year run.  I imagine this regime needs to make the playoffs this year to stay in place.

With two years left on his contract, Rob Manfred seems to have done a good job with steering baseball through the pandemic even with the brief lockout and the 2020 negotiation debacle. Seems like he could get an extension if he wanted to stay, no?
Tim Dierkes
10:59
Ehhhh...I mean, Manfred's job is not to serve the sport or fans, it's mostly just to make the owners money.  He's definitely succeeding there and I assume they're happy with him.  He's signed through 2024.
11:00
Perhaps owners will come to wish Manfred had talked more of them out of letting Steve Cohen in the club.  But a big part of Manfred's legacy will be the 2023 rules changes; let's see how those go.

If you had to bet, do you see the A's ending up in Vegas at the end of all of this (speaking of betting)?
