Trade Rumors Front Office Fantasy Chat with Brad Johnson: 9/8/22

Brad Johnson
11:58
Welcome everyone. We'll get started in a few moments
Perplexed
12:01
With the Orioles piggybacking Dean Kremer last night with Wells and Jordan Lyles coming back, should I hold Kremer or acquire available options like Waldichuk, Varland, Heasley, Cessa, Adrian Martinez, etc.?
Brad Johnson
12:03
Kremer doesn't seem like he's in danger of losing his starting role. It would actually be beneficial in wins leagues (but not QS) if he was a bulk reliever. That said, I don't think that's what's happening.
They're trying to stretch Wells back out and with off days today and Monday, he wasn't going to get a natural turn otherwise.
12:04
Now, we could debate if there's a better option in that mess of names you provided. Maybe it's worth streaming the spot based on matchup. Or figuring out which category(s) you need to prioritize.
12:05
For the moment, Kremer's not too far off Taillon - low K rate, low WHIP, modest ERA expectation.

Thank you for the chats and articles this year.  I am chasing saves in the stretch run.  Finnegan was fun yesterday, wasn't he?  Who do you see as next up in that mess in DC?   Also, Hughes or Wick for the Cubs?
Brad Johnson
12:07
Meltdown aside, Finnegan's still the guy. They *might* consider Hunter Harvey if only because he's club controlled and has that pedigree.
12:08
Carls Jr., Cishek, and McGee are all mercenaries. So there's no evaluative/developmental purpose to using them as closers.
I think it's both guys in Chicago. They're more appropriately cast as middle relievers.
12:10
Keep an eye on Manuel Rodriguez. Usually has completely busted command, but everything else is high leverage-ish. Could turn into something vaguely like a right-handed Gregory Soto.
12:11
That's a very loose comp, I want to emphasize. Just pointing out the command aspect is liable to betray you from time to time.
FantasyFanatic

Hi there, Im in a VERY deep dynasty league with a lot of bench spots for prospects. I can keep 9 of the following, who should I keep? I am in no rush for MLB ready guys, want the guys who will be the best in 2-3 years. (its a points league where hitting/pitching is a 55/45 split): Kelenic, E. Ruiz, L. Patino, Taj Bradley, Kyle Harrison, Bello, Tovar, Frelick, Dominguez, Crow-Armstrong, Priester, G. Williams, H.Brown, O. Martinez, Campusano, Jesus Sanchez
Brad Johnson
12:12
I get a chuckle from the many definitions of "deep dynasty" out there.
12:14
Let's see, I love pitchers with Bello's profile - loosely 2021 Brady Singer to Sandy Alcantara for the range of outcomes. A high floor profile that doesn't give away much ceiling.
12:15
PCA looks pretty exciting to me. Especially irl. I think he's a 5 win player in the making. Kevin Kiermaier with more power.
12:18
Tovar, Taj, Campusano, Harrison are check marks imo. Harrison has good ceiling/hype but there's considerable bust risk too.
So... 3 more...
12:19
I assume that's Jasson Dominguez. Might as well keep him even if it's just as trade bait.
12:20
I love Frelick, but the fantasy profile isn't particularly huge. Better OBP player too.
Let's cross him out.
I'd also scratch Orelvis and Sanchez.
And I've been on this for 10 minutes :)
12:21
Let's move on, you can justify any of the remaining picks imo.
Pitcher Predicament
12:21
Which pitcher would you keep, assuming equal late-round value (standard settings plus pitcher losses, so W/L/K/ERA/WHIP): Dustin May or Logan Gilbert?
Brad Johnson
12:21
Dustin May
12:22
The losses actually matter. Pile up Dodgers and you auto-win the category.
12:23
Gilbert's a good pitcher, but he's trending mid-rotation at the moment. More Chris Bassitt or Zac Gallen than a true top-tier ace. May still has that ceiling.
Gilbert's a really nice asset too though.
Desperate for Saves
12:24
Was really excited when Quijada got a save chance yesterday. Not so happy when he gave up back-to-back home runs.
Brad Johnson
12:24
Such is the challenge with dumpster diving saves.
Even the "good" ones like Jonathan Hernandez and Kyle Finnegan are liable to melt.
Hell, I still don't know what happened to Josh Hader. And he was a top 40 pick.
Rickey's limo
12:25
Somehow, I ended up with Jadiel Sanchez (LAA) in my farm system. Is he worth holding onto, or is he just another 5th outfielder whose career Rookie-level and A-level BA is .248?
Brad Johnson
12:25
See, this is what I think of as a deep dynasty decision point.
12:27
Quickly refreshed myself on the scouting report. Yea, he's a medium-probability backup outfielder. Might need a breakout or two to really crack the Majors for more than a few PA here and there.
12:29
It's not a bad foundation for a baseball player, but he'll need to add traits that aren't yet in evidence if he wants to matter. Players do that all the time, but our role as scouts and/or data aggregators (i.e. me) is to focus on what's already there and what is most often achieved from that starting point.
All of which is to say, I'm not optimistic.
Reynolds Rap
12:29
Where does Bryan Reynolds rank in a full, healthy season moving forward?  This season has been hard to judge because of a couple slumps and injuries.  I don't watch many Pirates games and I can't see anything special in the numbers, but the league clearly values him very highly with all the trade chatter over the last couple seasons.  Does he enter 2023 as a top 10 fantasy OF in your view?
Brad Johnson
12:30
Top 10 is a bit ambitious imo. But only a bit. Somewhere around OF15 imo.
