Trade Rumors Front Office Fantasy Chat with Brad Johnson: 9/8/22

Brad Johnson
12:31
And yes, he's hard to evaluate.
12:32
The power's up enough this season to be exciting (roughly 30 HR pace), but I'd rather have the missing .047 points of batting average.
If he ever combines this power and 2021's AVG, then he's going to win some fantasy championships.

What's the story on Garrett Whitlock? Brilliant in relief all year until mid-August rolled around. All of a sudden, he can't be trusted. Will Boston put him in the rotation next year, or try to see if there's still a closer inside him?
Brad Johnson
12:32
It's unclear. I suspect he'll be viewed as depth with a preferred role as a multi-inning reliever.
12:33
The high leverage kind
I think we're just seeing a blip right now, possibly related to fatigue and/or health.

Brady Singer is driving me nuts with his inconsistency. Brilliant one outing; the pits the next. It's not like he's a rookie anymore. Is inconsistency his future, or just a speed bump?
Brad Johnson
12:34
He's Kyle Gibson-redux
So yes, plan for inconsistency.
Out in the Outfield
12:34
Looking for a decent last outfielder, AL only OBP. Options include Drew Waters, Nick Pratto, Sam "Pinch Hit Walk" Haggerty, Myles Straw, Jake "Rake" Cave, some Oakland call-up whose name I refuse to learn...
Brad Johnson
12:35
I'd go for Pratto in OBP. He's been hitting mid-lineup too, and it's actually a good offense unlike some of those others.
12:36
Now, if you need to prioritize R/SB rather than HR/RBI, then you might consider Waters or Straw.
Oswald(o)
12:36
I like this Oswald/Oswaldo situation in NYC. Oswaldo has scuffled, but are you holding because of the lineup?
Brad Johnson
12:36
It depends on league depth/opportunity cost, but I can't say I see Cabrera as a starter. Not even really a second division guy.
12:37
He's a perfectly fine bench piece.
And, sure, he's only a couple sharp adjustments from jumping to a 2.0 WAR profile. Presently, he's rep level irl and a scrub fantasy.
12:38
Peraza's the real deal, though not as real as Volpe.

I’m in an AL-only, deep keeper league. Standard Roto.  Due to injuries, I’ve been able to pick up Josh Naylor, Vinnie Pasquantino and Tristan Casas, and using the corner position, I’ll probably be able to add Jung. Can’t keep all of them. Likely only two unless one is DH eligible. How would you rank them?
Brad Johnson
12:39
Vinnie P, Jung, Casas, Naylor
With the caveat that Naylor is the highest floor play for 2023.
Angel forever
12:39
I’m looking a Mickey Moniak to make a big Angel impact as he gets off the IR.   Am I California dreaming?
Brad Johnson
12:39
Yea, I think so.
12:40
My base fandom is Philadelphia (grew up going to 60+ games a year at Veterans Stadium) so I maybe have the jaded Philly perspective on Moniak.
12:41
There really isn't a lot of tangible reason for excitement. I'm kinda hoping for a Tyrone Taylor-like career which... isn't great. He put on a show in Spring Training this year, but so did Pedro Severino and dozens of other mediocrities.

12:42
Is Hunter Brown the real deal? Is he going to be a fantasy stud or just a flash in the pan?
Brad Johnson
12:44
I can't exactly tell, but I *am* optimistic about this one. I don't necessarily see a stud. Logan Webb-ish feels like the upside, and even that's a stretch since Webb has a fantastic changeup and Brown's really a sinker + 2 breaking balls guy.
12:45
The three-pitch repertoire gives him a little more flexibility to find future relevance than two-pitch types like Singer and Brad Keller. The other thing to watch is his command which has improved but is still viewed as minus.

In a 13-league, NL only, 12 categories format, we spent much of this season at or near the basement. In our league, the team with the worst record has to buy lunch, during the auction, for all members of the league, which is expensive and embarrassing! At any rate, my son and I continued to "trust the process" and look at players' projections and history. We have now climbed to fifth place, with a shot at third! How do you advise fantasy players to resist the urge to trade and give up on the season (which I have done MANY times!) and realize the numbers eventually will accumulate, if the talent is there?
Brad Johnson
12:47
Even if the talent isn't there, the mere act of trying for 6 months can accomplish amazing things in fantasy baseball. Can't tell you how many times I've had a dreadful team through May and finished in the money. And I haven't truly high-efforted any of my rosters since ~2015.
12:48
Effort today also improves your play next season, even in redraft leagues. You learn more strategies and tactics, develop better player knowledge, and you're more likely to notice your opponents go-to strategies.
12:49
The more data you have stashed in your brain, the easier this is.
(stash enough, and you can write a couple thousand words per hour of chat!)
12:51
As an aside, my personal goal for next season is to go full effort on a couple rosters. One dynasty, one vanilla 12-team mixed. Going to farm everything else out to co-managers for a year. It's been too long since I've been able to focus on 1-2 leagues rather than 10-20 at once.

Finishing 7th in my league (H2H categories with OPS and WHIP), so turning attention to possible keepers - how do you evaluate someone like Cedric Mullins, a SB specialist who doesn't really help or hurt you anywhere else?
Brad Johnson
12:52
My preferred strategy for H2H (especially auctions) is to load up on aces and guys like Mullins who can help consistently capture SBs while nudging you to some other offensive category wins.
12:53
So... I very much like Mullins for H2H. SBs are often an easy-to-claim category.
Last Q in the queue. Any buzzer beaters?

12:53
I have too many good SP's on the IL. Who are some good pick ups?
Brad Johnson
12:54
Without knowing your league depth, I'm liable to shoot too high/low.
