They signed Pillar to a minor league deal. They've been open to trades of Leody Taveras. They could just be grabbing some depth they like in case that comes together. They don't owe Pillar anything other than a handful of spring ABs.

With Manaea out now, will Stearns make a deal or wait for the deadline?
Stearns
3:30
Now that Manaea is hurt, in addition to Montas, the Mets have lost two of their top starters. Senga is a question mark and the other starters, aside from Peterson, are back of the rotation or bullpen fodder.
What moves do you see them making for the rotation? They can’t have a poor start like they did last year.

With the current injure of Frankie Montás should the NY Mets consider to contact Miami Marlins and propose them a trade involving Sandy Alcántara?

And what his cost would be in terms of prospect capital?
Steve Adams
3:30
Safe to say this is weighing heavy on the minds of Mets fans, haha

Carlos Mendoza repeatedly referenced using internal options this morning. Within minutes of the Manaea news, various Mets beat writers were citing team sources in echoing the internal mentality.

If Manaea had an arm injury that might keep him out into May/June, as Montas does, a move would feel likelier. As it is, Manaea might be back mid-April. The Mets have Senga, Peterson, Holmes, Blackburn, Canning, Megill ... they feel that's sufficient to keep things competitive until mid-April.

Signing Quintana for 25-32 starts when Manaea might miss 2-3 seems like an overreaction.

I think they should've done more with the rotation in general, but as I said when writing on the subject a few weeks back, adding another No. 4 type arm like Quintana doesn't feel like the route I'd take anyway. They need a more clear No. 1-2 type.

With Murphy out for a while would you think Huff or Stassi takes the backup job?
Steve Adams
3:34
If he's healthy, Stassi is more intriguing to me than Huff. Stassi's the better defender and has shown more sustainable and legitimate-looking success in the majors than Huff's BABIP-y results to date.
3:37
I also just can't help rooting for Stassi after the horrifying experience he went through with his son being born like 3.5 months premature and spending the first 6 months of his life in the NICU.

Both of my sons were born around the same time he was going through that, and reading about his experience crushed my heart and made me feel ill for them. One of my nightmares when we were expecting parents. And then Stassi misses the whole 2024 season due to hip surgery. Give this guy a win, already, universe.

(Of course, his son eventually being able to come home is an enormous win, but you get the general point)

Build a super-superstar by selecting ONE skill from each of five different hitters who have yet to play in a major league game.
Steve Adams
3:37
Heh, this is kind of fun. Give me a minute here
3:40
Chandler Simpson's speed
Emmanuel Rodriguez's plate discipline/pitch recognition
Roman Anthony's raw power (or Bryce Eldridge?)
Carson Williams' glove
And.....
James Triantos' hit tool?

I'm probably forgetting some obvious ones but I'm going off the cuff here, so that looks pretty dang good.
3:41
Chanduel Roeldridge-Williantos would be a dang good player, though.

Sorry to see Nick Madrigals injury. He's had a tough career thus far. Since he signed a split contract will he get major league money while he is injured?
Steve Adams
3:42
He was injured while playing on a major league contract in MLB camp. I expect he'll be put on the MLB 60-day IL as soon as the Mets need a roster spot and then, yes, be paid at the MLB rate within his contract rather than the MiLB one.

If the Twins compete this season and decide to buy at the deadline (somehow), where do they look for help?
Steve Adams
3:46
I don't really think it's a reach for the Twins to compete. I think the Twins, Tigers, Royals and Guards will all be within arm's reach of the division for much of the season. I'm more optimistic on the Twins than I am the Guardians or Royals, right now. Not by a wide margin necessarily, but I think their depth is better and the bullpen has a chance to be pretty excellent.

Their deadline targets will depend on health. It seems fair to expect one of Buxton/Correa/Lewis will be dealing with a notable injury. (If not, then they're in REAL good shape)

First base, a top-end starting pitcher or just more generally a strong bat they can plug in for semi-regular work at DH all seem reasonable -- but a healthy bit of guesswork is required when forecasting any team's deadline outlook this far out.

Can you give a breakdown of what a team must leave camp with, example, 7 starters, 11 relievers, would appreciate
Steve Adams
3:47
Most teams are going to leave camp with 13 position players, five starting pitchers and eight relievers. Some might carry six starters and seven relievers. Might see a few go with an extra bench player early on because off-days eliminate the need for a fifth starter early in the year.

Top 2 prospect debut’s you are most excited for this year?
Steve Adams
3:51
It's probably boring to say Roki Sasaki, but I'm specifically a sucker for dominant pitching, so definitely him. I love a good 1-0 or 2-1 pitchers' duel, and I'm pretty interested to see how hitters react to his splitter.

Position players ... Roman Anthony is another boring answer. You're talking 1-2 on most public rankings there, haha, but hard not to think of him.

Emmanuel Rodriguez has one of the weirder overall skill sets you'll see of any prospect, and I'm curious to watch his plate discipline in action against MLB pitchers if you want someone a little further down the list. He walked in a quarter of his plate appearances in the minors last year. What the actual hell? Ha

With Sandy Alcantara already throwing sinkers in the high 90s, what are the odds that he gets traded before opening day? Would Richard Fitts, Franklin Arias and a prospect or two get it done for the Redsox?
Steve Adams
3:53
Low. I think the Marlins recognize he's their best chance to get a comical haul, and doing that probably requires waiting until he's had a chance to build up and show sustained success and durability.

On that trade package -- not close for me. The Marlins are going to be asking about any of the big three (Anthony, Mayer, Campbell) in those talks. They can't afford to trade Alcantara for a mid-range return.
Steve
3:53
Why are the mariners wasting their window of opportunity. Last trade deadline they could have gotten PAREDES for 3B and CHISOLM for 2B along with Randy Azorena.
Steve Adams
3:56
The Mariners had about $15MM to spend this winter, and that was after they declined some club options and non-tendered some guys. I don't think ownership would've green-lighted the acquisition of three players combining to make nearly $24MM in 2025.

The Cubs also had to give up an immediate young big league hitter (Chris Morel) to get Paredes. Did the Mariners have a comparable bat to dangle?
(They did not)

Do the Reds have the best trio of SP prospects (Lowder, Burns & Petty)?
Steve Adams
3:59
I'm sure there are people in the game who'd give them credit for the top trio, but opinions vary.

Pirates (Bubba Chandler/Thomas Harrington/Braxton Ashcraft) are up there. White Sox have Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, Drew Thorpe ... I'm sure I'm missing some.

A couple of NL questions:
  1. Are any of AJ Puk, J Tinoco, T Kinley, Vodnick worth keeping/having at $10@ - (10-team league).
  2. Thoughts on Caleb Durbin?
  3. Thoughts on T Ornelas?
Ooops!  Forgot to add T Saggase - I wonder if he's a potential "stud" in the making -- they just need to move Arenado to give him a chance at PT...
Steve Adams
4:02
Tough to say without knowing the roster size, scoring format, etc. But broadly speaking, Puk could be one of the best relievers in baseball this year.

Durbin, I just have a hard time seeing him hit enough to generate the regular playing time needed to make the speed a viable fantasy asset. Ornelas feels AAA-bound after the Padres' late additions. And I don't think Saggese gets the necessary playing time with Arenado staying at 3B and the Cards thus needing 2B open for Nolan Gorman. He could bounce around, but I expect a fair bit of AAA time as well.

Happy Monday, Steve.  Thank you for another chat. Over/ under 83 wins for the Reds?    I think they will win 88 games and make playoffs.  They won 77 games last year with a lot of injuries and also going 15-28 in 1 run games. With a better manager,  healthy seasons from Lodolo, Mcclain, Fraley, and Friedl, this team will be better both offensively and defensively. Add to that the hiring of Francona, plus Greene and Elly taking the step from stars to superstars, and an overall improved roster (Hays playing with something to prove), and this is a good team.
Steve Adams
4:05
If they can get full seasons from Lodolo, McLain, Fraley, Friedl and see no regression from Greene/Elly, sure. But that's a lot to bank on. Lodolo's injury history is massive at this point. Fraley and Friedl are getting there. Greene saw a velo dip and posted a 6-7% HR/FB that's not likely to be sustained, especially not pitching home games at GABP.
Every team needs a lot of good breaks, of course. I think the Reds' group is generally solid, and the division is weak.
4:06
I like the pickup of Hays there. I prefer their end of the Singer/India swap. I love Elly. They have the potential to win 88 games, sure, but I don't think I'd predict it.

What are your thoughts on the Heaney deal? Just adding more arms or a precursor to a trade for a bat?
Steve Adams
4:07
For $5MM, adding a pitcher like Heaney is an objective bargain. I look at it more as just taking advantage of an opportunity than some kind indicator that they're going to stun everyone with a spring trade of Jared Jones or Bubba Chandler.

When an arbitration-eligible player gets non-tendered, when does their new team have to pay them as much as they'd receive through arbitration and when can they pay them whatever the player will accept?
