Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by. I am starting to get a baseball itch but things are looking pretty bleak, huh? Anyway, let's talk some Yankees baseball, labor negotiations, or whatever else is on your mind.
1:01
Oh, and please send us your mailbag questions (viewsfrom314@gmail.com) so we can run it again next week.

If Cashman chooses to stopgap SS and not make other material improvements to the offense this season, it would appear that management is shifting its championship contention window down the road by a few years until Volpe is ready. Why would Aaron Judge not view this as management taking a mulligan during his remaining prime years and be motivated to walk at the end of the season?
Derek
1:03
Judge has said that he's wanted to be a Yankee longterm, so I don't necessarily think that would change anything. Keep in mind that our definition of contending (World Series title) is a lot different than what Hal seemingly feels (just get to the dance), so I don't think the team will be bad enough for Judge to suddenly think this is a bad fit for him.

Maybe overly optimistic, but I see we have 2 1 starters (Cole and Severino) and 2 #2's (Montgomery and Tallion).
Derek
1:04
I'd say you're overly optimistic. Cole is an ace, yes. Severino needs to re-establish himself now that he's healthy as ace-like or a great #2. Taillon has #2 upside I suppose, but realistically he's a 3/4, alongside Monty IMO.

Would the yankees really trade Jasson for Matt Olsen?  With Volpe and Peraza off the table according to reports, its hard to see how else it would get done.
Derek
1:06
Is Peraza off the table? I haven't read that. In any case I don't think the Yankees are trading Jasson either. His value took a bit of a hit this year, so while he's still a very exciting prospect, it's too soon to move on.

With the season likely being 150 game or shorter, does a shorter season help this current roster?
Derek
1:07
I am starting to feel pessimistic about a full 162, but there's still some time to get this done and have an abbreviated ST (four weeks or so). I suppose a shorter season would help as it would mean guys who replace injured players (i.e. whoever takes Taillon's spot to start the season) would play less.

How big of an issue is allowing trading of draft choices in a new CBA , and if allowed, do you think it would have an immediate impact on future trades? thnks
Derek
1:10
I don't think it's a hot button issue at all. I'm not recalling hearing anything about it either. I don't think the value of, say, a first rounder would be quite as much in a trade as we'd anticipate. It's not going to be like getting a 1st in the NFL or NBA, where those guys have an impact right away.

If you had a $300 million payroll for the Yankees how to you spend what's left (yes we all know they aren't going to $300 million)?
Derek
1:12
Definitely signing Correa, for one. Extend Judge now. Sign Freeman while they're at it. I think that would push them right up against 300.

Hi Derek. Which member of the 2009 Yankees felt most like a character out of a Faulkner novel?
Derek
1:13
Does it make me look bad to say that I don't think I've read a Faulkner novel? Pretty sure I haven't.

Realistically , what would you like to see the Yankees do after the lock out ends (Correa, Freeman, Rondon, Marte all wearing pinstripes not happening) ?
Derek
1:15
I don't think it's totally unrealistic that one of Correa, Story, or Freeman signs here. I'm holding out hope. A Bryan Reynolds trade would be nice. Just please, no Andrelton Simmons at SS, which seems annoyingly possible.

Do you see Carlos Beltran's gig as a possible audition to be the next Yankee manager if they say fail to make the playoffs?
Derek
1:18
I don't think it's an audition. Unless Hal makes a 180 after this season, Cashman will be extended and Boone's already under a new deal.
It is an opportunity for Beltran to get back in front of public, issue an apology for the Astros scandal, and perhaps remind people why he's such a good candidate for another team, though.

Am I crazy for thinking there's a long term path for the Yankees to flex their financial might WHILE adhering to hypothetical luxury tax constraints? We've allocated some ~$40-50M per year to the pen over the past several years. Allocate those funds elsewhere while going full Rays on the pen, and things look a lot different. Chapman and Britton combined for 0.4 WAR last year.
Derek
1:21
I think we will see them cut back on bullpen spending now that they have gotten a really good handle on pitching development internally. Nonetheless, as long as they adhere to the fake cap, they will always be constraining themselves from fully flexing their financial might.

Based in current rosters, ZiPS projects the Yanks to win the East with just 90 wins, one game better than Toronto and two games better than Tampa Bay.  Do you buy it?
Derek
1:23
The win totals seem a little low to me, but I do think the division is a toss up right now among all of the non-Orioles teams

Have there been concerns that an abbreviated ST may lead to injuries, especially with teams not having contact with players and knowing how they are staying in-shape during the offseason?
Derek
1:25
There are concerns, for sure.

What is the most aesthetically pleasing pitch in recent Yankees history? Dellin's curve? Andrew Miller's slider? Mo's cutter? etc
Derek
1:26
I love a good backdoor curveball taken for strike three. Some good ones in mind include Moose and AJ Burnett. Dellin obviously had those too.

Do you think that Hall of Fame players who were very batting average focused (Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, Ichiro, Rod Carew, etc) would have still made the Hall if they played under the current rules with the shifts and analytics?
Derek
1:27
Yes, definitely. Were any of these guys actually super pull happy? Feels like they'd all still cruise to 3k hits.
Juan
1:29
Say Cashman is let go or retires at the end of the year. Who would you like to see as next GM/PoBO?
Derek
1:31
Uhh, this is a tough one. I'm not really well versed on who the up-and-comers are around the league.
Rachel Balkovec has expressed interest in a front office or GM role down the line. Maybe they are grooming her for that in the future? She's got the on field experience, is going to manage this year, is really well liked by her players, and is analytically inclined too. Seems to check a lot of boxes to me.
Rob
1:32
What is the argument for keeping Cashman beyond 2022 other than continuity?  Seems like many teams have surpassed the Yankees and this FO needs a reset at the top.
Derek
1:34
Be careful what you wish for. I also don't think that the Yankees are being lapped by the field in terms of the FO. They have massive scouting and analytic departments, have gotten really good on the player development side. If there's a criticism, maybe it's not being aggressive enough in the trade/free agent market, but that does link back to Hal's mandate.

Do you think Carlos Beltran is a good choice for YES? I watch via MLB-TV (live in Oregon now) but I'm still annoyed by the Astros cheating. How will NYC viewers feel?
Derek
1:37
Seems like a good choice to me. Long playing career at a high level, well liked by teammates, etc. I also don't feel like folks have ire for Beltran in the way they do for Altuve, Bregman, etc. He should still address it though.
1:38
He could be awful. As Mike Axisa wrote recently and I agree, Tino Martinez was dreadful in the YES booth, and I don't know that we'd necessarily have expected that from Tino. So, who knows.
TLDR: we'll see?

Sign Rodon, pretty good staff, Cole, Sevy, Monty, Nasty Nestor, Taillon ?
