I've seen a lot of conversation about the second base redundancy with people thinking they'd move Gleyber, but do you think there's a chance they could move DJ instead? Not sure if he has a no-trade, but aside from his positional flexibility (which IKF now provides and Gleyber does to an extent), you end up keeping a much older player on the downswing of his career. Gleyber's cheaper with just as much potential to improve on last year as DJ imo.
Derek
12:28
I think it would be hard to, but I'm with you on this I think. I'm a little more optimistic offensively about Gleyber than DJ. Not many teams are gonna want to take on DJ's contract given how uninspiring his 2021 was, plus his age.

What do you think of the state of the bullpen. Seems nearly set, but I think we could use another right-on-right guy for TOR
Derek
12:31
I'm not worried about the bullpen at all actually. I think it's in good shape.

Re: Gardner re-signing... Is there really room for 6 OF on the active roster?
Derek
12:32
I wouldn't rule out a Gallo trade just yet, so if they do re-sign Gardner, keep that possibility in mind
Terry
12:32
What happens if Judge/Rizzo don’t get the shot? Is this enough to sink Judge in NY.
Derek
12:33
Assuming status quo at Opening Day, it's a big problem, but Judge has a ton to lose and I'd have to think he'd give in. Otherwise he's risking free agency pushed off another year, and he's not exactly young anymore.
Mike
12:35
What is more likely: Yankees playing in the WC round or the Yankees streak of finishing above .500 ending?
Derek
12:35
I'd be stunned if they didn't finish above .500. I know we're not happy with what's gone on over the past few days, but this team is still too good not to win 90+.
Ron
12:36
Can you explain the logic of hugging every prospect?  I just don't get it.  The Braves and Jays weren't afraid of losing a few for established players, but this team was?
Derek
12:37
I don't think this is totally fair, the Yankees traded a good amount for Gallo. Trading Alcantara was a lot for Rizzo, even.
I'll quickly interject with this rumor:
12:38
Had a bunch of questions about SP targets in the queue, so I think that kinda helps answer those questions.

I'm sure I'm wrong, but the Donaldson trade is giving me flashbacks of Youkilis and Hafner days. I'm wrong right?
Derek
12:39
Yeah, you're wrong. Donaldson is actually still very good in spite of his age.
Joe
12:39
Between the two A’s pitchers in the rumor, do you prefer one much more then the other?
Derek
12:40
I lean toward Montas. Extra year of team control, and I worry a little bit about Manaea because his velocity seems to vary a lot start to start
Bart
12:42
Who would be the best/most likely starting pitchers we could get for Voit/Gleber?
Derek
12:42
I'd lower your expectations on a return for these guys. I think the Yankees will be hard pressed to get much in return
GrouchoNYY
12:43
Wilson Contreras a possibility on an expiring contract? Voit or Glaybar to the Cubs
Derek
12:43
Again, same deal here. Not getting Contreras for either of those two.

The Yankees have some really bad optics of late, huh? That first homestand could get ugly. Fans are seriously not happy.
Derek
12:44
I feel like you/we could be overestimating how many fans actually are mad. The blog/Twitter, as much of a following as we've gotten, still is in the minority of fans I think.
Billy
12:45
Barring a trade, someone needs to be DFA'd for Rizzo. Is there anyone above Andujar or Florial on that totem pole?
Derek
12:45
They might just put Ridings on the 60 day. He still hasn't begun throwing.
David
12:46
Think we see any IKF at catcher?
Derek
12:46
In an emergency maybe. He hasn't caught since 2019.
Andrew
12:47
I read that George IV(Hank's son and the Boss's grandson) has stepped back from his racing gig taken a position in the organization.  You have to believe he has to be frustrated by Hal's frugality and will try to make that be known.
Derek
12:48
Saw that too, but I don't know of any evidence that he's frustrated or can wrestle control away from Hal.

I think the Yankees are better than last year with Rizzo and Gallo for full years Severino back and a new third baseman shortstop catcher. If they do nothing else, do you think that they are better than the other three contenders in the division? It’s possible for the fourth best team in the east right now.
Derek
12:51
I still think they're better than Boston and Tampa, but I can't confidently say the same about Toronto. Things could change if Freeman lands in Boston.
Ted
12:51
Will Gil be the 5th starter given the injuries to German and Taillon?
Derek
12:51
It actually sounds like Taillon will be ready right away, which is surprising. So if all else remains the same, Cole/Monty/Severino/Taillon/Cortes looks like the starting five right now
Zach
12:52
How much longer do you think Cashman stays on his job?  This will be year 25 and his contract runs out after this season.  A change has to happen eventually.
Derek
12:52
I think his contract is over at the end of this season. I feel like it'll either be now or a decade from now, but nowhere in between.
John
12:55
Who plays more innings this year for the yankees, Higashioka  or Rortvedt?

My money's on Rortvedt because he's a left handed batter, but Higashioka has the better track record.
Derek
12:55
I'd guess Higashioka even though he's on the weak side of the platoon. But good grief, please trade for a catcher. This tandem will be awful offensively.
Billy
12:57
Thoughts on Laureano? He'll miss a month due to PEDs but maybe that'll reduce his cost.
