I remember Lindsay Adler writing about Tommy Kahnle's red bull habit. If you were a ML baseball player, what caffeine habit would you develop out of necessity/boredom?
Derek
12:23
I already drink a lot of homemade cold brew on a daily basis, so I think I'm already set.
Jeb
12:24
Have there been statements about Schmidt's role this year? MIRP, perhaps?
Derek
12:24
He's got two more minor league options left. I think they'll keep trying him as a starter.
Duffy
12:25
Spring Training is a liar, but Wesneski looked like he had really good stuff the other day. Do you think he factors in this year? He seems to be moving through the system quickly.
Derek
12:25
His slider is nasty. It's very possible - he's rule 5 eligible in the offseason so he'll need to be put on the 40 anyway.
The Perezident
12:26
Any hopes for Deivi this season?
Derek
12:26
I'm not counting on him for anything in the majors, just hoping he can sort things out in Triple-A.
Michael

Given the team we have right now, was the biggest mistake not even trying for Scherzer / Rodon? I can talk myself into the defensive and offensive talent spread across the team and roll w/ the prospects in the wings, but pitching is still pitching and there are so many questions in the rotation this year and next
Derek
12:29
Scherzer would have been awesome, but I get not doing that deal. I'm not upset about Rodon either really. The biggest mistake will always be not signing mid-20s stars like Correa/Seager, and instead centering the offseason around two mid-30s corner infielders.
Doug
12:30
If Gardner doesn’t come back is it because the Yankees don’t think he can contribute? Or Hal has reached his spending limit?
Derek
12:30
Neither, actually. I think they believe Locastro can probably perform similar to Gardner for less.
Ed
12:31
Why is Andujar still a Yankee? Is it upside? I still don't see a reason to keep him.
Derek
12:31
Kinda shocked me that they didn't non-tender him months ago. I'm not sure what exactly he's gonna do this year, because he's positionless and hasn't hit or been healthy since his rookie year. I guess he'll be on the bench to start the year, but why?

The ghost runner is going to back but only for this season? Makes no sense except as a way for them to back door it as a permanent fixture. Is this a red line for you? Is banning the shift a red line for you?
Derek
12:33
I'm not a big fan of the ghost runner but I can live with it. I'm fine with limiting the shift too. I wouldn't outright ban it, but if you can keep infielders in on the dirt, for instance, I think I'd be open to that.
Sam
12:34
If Judge does not get vaxxed do you think they sign conforto?
Derek
12:35
No, and there are rumors that Conforto isn't vaccinated either, so he wouldn't help if the mandate is in place.
Duffy
12:36
With arbitration beginning to wrap up, do you think we see another flurry of moves this weekend/early next week?
Derek
12:36
Eh, I don't necessarily think so. We're two weeks away from Opening Day now and I just don't see many more trades happening aside from minor ones. I'm sure more free agents will come off the board though, that's a given.
Chris
12:37
How much stock do you put into the quotes coming out from players on everyone wanting Gardner back? There's been a lot of talk about this teaming needing to have more "fu*k you" energy, which is supposed to be addressed by the addition of guys like Donaldson. Seems to me like there could be value in the continuity and leadership of Gardner, but it also feels like that roster spot could be put to better use.
Derek
12:38
I don't think they will change the front office's mind, if that's the implication. Of course they're going to say they want him back.

Baseball Reference's Similarity Score says that Aaron Judge's best comparison through his age-29 season is Brian Giles. His two most similar batters overall are Cody Bellinger and Kyle Schwarber. Does this pass the eye test?
Derek
12:39
Giles was a really good player, underrated for his time probably, so sure? I guess the batter similarity depends on the season we're talking about, because it's definitely not recent Bellinger.

What's the over/under that 4 of the 6 teams in the 2022 playoffs are the Yanks, Sox, Jays, and Rays?
Derek
12:41
There's definitely a nonzero chance of that happening, but I also wouldn't bet on it. Would have been the case last year though.
Steven Tydings
12:41
As a pinch-running enthusiast, how excited should I be for Tim Locastro to potentially make the Opening Day roster?
Derek
12:42
Very? Haha. No shortage of guys to PR for late in games, whether it's Stanton, Rizzo, Donaldson, etc.
Jeb
12:42
90wrc+ and avg or above avg def at ss would be a GREAT start for Peraza, no?
Derek
12:43
Yes, but moreso if the defense is as advertised.
Eric
12:44
Why hoard prospects like Wells who likely won't stay at catcher and Medina who might end up as a reliever?  Seems to me like these are guys they should give up before their value plummets.
Derek
12:44
Is their trade value all that great in the first place? Those two feel more like secondary pieces in a big trade rather than headliners.
12:45
Not saying they are bad prospects or anything, but I don't think they fetch as much as you might think.
Anthony
12:45
Hot take - make home runs count as only 0.5 run. A solo homerun is 0.5 runs. A grandslam would be 3.5 runs. Other sports have tiered scoring (field goal compared to td, dunk compared to 3 pointer). This could help encourage more small ball and create more action. You cant sit around and wait for a home-run. It would reward teams for baserunning, situational hitting, things that the game wants more of. Thoughts?
Derek
12:46
That's a wild one. Way too drastic for me.
Duffy
12:47
David Freitas' bat is projected to be above league average by ZiPS, what do you know about his defensive ability? Is there a chance he is the starting catcher?
Derek
12:49
I'm not putting much stock into that projection. He's had some really big seasons in Triple-A, and maybe the Yankees think they see something, but I don't think he's an above average hitter. No idea about the glove but I am guessing the Yankees think it's good enough to be the team's 3rd or 4th string catcher, depending on how they stack him up against Brantly.

The Yankees are really banking on their player development tunnel to build an infield of Sweeney, Volpe, Peraza, and Wells--aren't they? Has it improved all that much to be doable, or are prospects still suspect until proven otherwise?
Derek
12:52
I know they've talked up all of these guys a lot but I don't think they're planning on an entirely internally developed infield. Some of these guys will not pan out or will be parts of trades. The Yankees are always going to talk guys up.
Jon
12:52
I kind of feel bad for IKF.  If he struggles, fans will want Volpe or Peraza.  If he gets off to a hot start, fans will think he's the savior and will be disappointed when regression kicks in.
