There's another door though. Maybe the Yankees unlock something offensively. Not saying it will happen, or that they deserve the benefit of the doubt, but they've done it with poor offensive profiles before. I've been meaning to try to dig into the underlying data myself to see if there's anything worthwhile there.

In any case, he's a BABIP driven low OBP guy which means it probably will feel like he's hitting better than he actually is because he'll probably manage a 270 batting average.

I've been thinking about the JD trade, do you think the Yanks saw him as a fallback DH option with DJ at 3rd and Gardy (eventually resigned) as the 4th OF if Judge was out for the vaccine mandate?

No, I don't think that was the motivation. They like his offensive profile and think he'll help change the team's attitude.

How can they sign Judge to an extension without knowing about how the Vaccine mandate is going to play out? Do you think it's likely they'll make vaccination a condition of the extension?

Can they even make that a condition of a new deal? I mean yeah, I'd want to know how many games he could actually play in before signing him.

Problem is no one knows when/if the mandate will be lifted. The easiest route is for Judge to just get vaccinated if he hasn't already. There's a lot of money on the line for him if he doesn't and the mandate stays in place because the Yankees could withhold pay and not allow him to accrue service time. I
