Derek

Hey everybody, happy to be chatting with you again. My daughter's now two weeks old, I'm on parental leave, and we have some semblance of a routine now, so I'm feeling pretty good albeit still sleep deprived. Let's talk Yanks.
Hornick
12:02
Do you have any solutions to beef up the bottom third of this order? Higgy is who he is, and IKF just looks like he's pressing.
Derek
12:02
Barring a trade, not right now. I'm not convinced Peraza is ready just yet, and Volpe needs a little more time too. I guess Rortvedt *maybe* can be a boost over Higgy, but I'm not holding my breath.
Mr Rogers
12:03
How bout our old friend Andrew Heaney throwing 4.1 scoreless for the dodgers....how!?
Derek
12:03
Hahahahaha.
12:04
Hey, maybe that means the Yankees were on to something with Heaney, but just couldn't unlock things. It's also just one game. Keep in mind that the Yankees *may* have tried to fix Heaney midseason last year, but perhaps it was a lot easier for the Dodgers to do this in spring training. But again, we're talking about one game.

If Judge walks at the end of the year, do the Yankees use the $ to sign Correa or Trea Turner?
Derek
12:04
I would hope so, but I wouldn't count on it.

12:05
At what point do we start believing in Nasty Nestor as an established and effective starting pitcher?
Derek
12:06
I believe he's a good pitcher, but likely better off as a swing man. I like his versatility more than pitching every fifth day, but so far he's proven he can hack it in the rotation
Iron Mike
12:07
Do Hick's career splits back up my theory that he should abandon lefty hitting and become a full-time righty? His swing is so much more fluid and consistent as a righty. As a lefty all he seems to do is be off balance and pull the ball
Derek
12:07
I remember him being a better RHH in his Twins-days and I believe in his first year with the Yankees. I'd have to double check though, give me a second.
12:08
Interestingly he has been a better LHH (114 wRC+) than RHH (99 wRC+) with the Yankees.
David Williams
12:09
IKF doesn't even pass the eye-test defensively, and he's an automatic out at the plate. When do the Yankees pull the plug? and what do they do? Promote someone or turn it over Marwin?
Derek
12:10
Like it or not, I think they're going to ride it out with him at least a few months. Peraza will have to force the issue, and so far, he's hitting 227/227/409 in five games at Triple-A this year. Volpe isn't off to a hot start either.
Marwin is definitely not the answer as well, btw.

Tampa’s Statcast data tells me The Martian’s plate discipline borders on nonexistent.  Should they sell high on this kid and get some value before the hype completely deflates?  It’s pretty alarming how little clue he has, exit velos notwithstanding.
Derek
12:12
I'm not too worried about walk rate, but the strikeout rate is definitely alarming. I'm not sure he fetches much in a trade right now anyway.
Dansby SwanSong
12:12
Dan Szymborski at Fangraphs picked Higgy as a breakout hitting candidate.  It's not based on spring training, but rather his exit velocities.  Do you buy it?
Derek
12:12
No.
12:13
He's just not a good hitter. He has no discipline. Yes, there's raw power there, but that's really about it.
beewilly
12:13
who is the first Yankees pitcher to go six innings and when will it happen?
Derek
12:13
Whoever is lined up to face Baltimore on Friday. Is that Monty?
12:14
I'd pick Cole, but who knows what sort of pregame festivities will affect him tonight
Dan
12:15
Prediction time:  are IKF and Higgy still the starters by September?
Derek
12:15
IKF no, Higgy sort of, but in that platoon with Rortvedt.
Kevin
12:15
How does the midseason trade market look for catching?
Derek
12:16
Willson Contreras is going to be the big name, I think. I'm sure we'll hear about Sean Murphy, but Contreras seems much more likely to be moved.

12:16
When Rortvedt is healthy, will he go to AAA or replace Trevino?
Derek
12:16
I'm guessing the Yankees will let him run a full rehab stint in the minors, and if that goes well, he takes Trevino's spot.
Aaron
12:17
Assuming that they heat up and prove themselves plenty capable of mastering AAA in the near future, when do you see the likes of Peraza and Cabrera being called up at earliest? When do you expect them to be brought up otherwise (again, assuming that they prove themselves ready in the next month or so of games)?
Derek
12:18
I think Cabrera is the first one up if one of the current infielders gets hurt. Peraza needs everyday playing time, and while that would be nice for Cabrera too, I don't think he has a future as a regular with the Yankees.
As for Peraza, I'd say June the earliest if he starts hitting better and IKF continues to stink.
Billy
12:18
You mentioned Peraza may not be ready this year. Is the 2nd half of this year at AAA really going to make a difference as a prospect?
Derek
12:19
If he's not hitting, then more time is warranted in Scranton, no? If he's raking, then yeah, no need to keep him down.
Ben
12:20
Do you think the hype around The Martian is too high given his lack of production?
Derek
12:21
The hype has always been way too high (and unfair to him). The comps he got before he had a professional at bat were insane.
Billy
12:21
Hypothetically, if Judge has a healthy season and finishes top 3 in MVP voting, how much more could he get on the open market versus what was already offered to him?
Derek
12:22
I didn't like that the Yankees publicly aired their offer, but I do think what was offered seemed pretty reasonable. I'm not so sure how much more he would actually get. Maybe he'd crack $250M?
Eric S
12:23
What about a trade for Brian Reynolds-solves the CF issue as I don’t think Hicks survives the season without injury and isn’t as good anyway ?
