I don't think Pittsburgh is going to trade Reynolds, especially in light of the recent financial news for them. They need to keep up appearances somehow.
Sam
12:25
Do you think Yankees will expand their bench and bring up a bat like Andujar? or is the three-man bench the plan all season?
Derek
12:26
They can't go three man bench all year, especially as long as Higgy/IKF play.
They need an extra bench player to PH. Whether that's Miggy or someone else, something's gotta give. That first Jays game particularly exposed the issue.
Sam
12:27
If florial looks like a real .250 hitter in AAA, does he make sense as a bench piece? he's probably a better CF'er than anyone with the big club currently.
Derek
12:28
I mean, sure. But I am not confident in his bat at all, this year's hot start notwithstanding.
Ben
12:30
What do you think would be a realistic outcome for him?
Derek
12:30
This was a follow up re: Dominguez.
12:31
I don't think it's possible to predict a realistic outcome at this point. His variance is so, so high. The tools, exit velo, reputation etc. point to a potential superstar. The swing and miss points to a potential bust.
Anthony
12:31
Who is playing SS opening day 2023?
Derek
12:31
Putting me on the spot here. I'll say Volpe
Al
12:32
Nestor - Taken out too soon?  Seemed a bit ticked off.
Derek
12:33
Tbh, I was watching the Nets last night while periodically flipping back to the Yankees, so I didn't see this in real time. I think it's fine not to push Nestor though, especially with such a strong bullpen behind him.
Sam
12:34
This is a tough one because the answer is probably "it's something behind the scenes fans can't know" but why does it feel like the yankees have been so much better on finding later-round draft picks/smaller money IFA's than first-rounders and big $$ IFA's? Yanks seem to have improved (maybe) w/ Volpe and sweeney (big maybe) but it's been an issue for years..
Derek
12:36
I think it's a huge credit to the player development staff, in particular. I'm also going to guess that the Yankees spend much, much more on scouting at the amateur levels than other teams, which goes a long way in unearthing sleepers.
Plus, I'm guessing they have a good amateur analytical model. It's why they picked Sweeney, who I think is going to be a great hitter
Did you guys see this last night? Let me share. Sounds so good:
Billy
12:37
Chapman still looks great despite his age. Yanks have never not had at least one big-name, high-salary RP.  Do you think they'll extend him?
Derek
12:38
I think the days of big RP contracts for the Yankees are over. It's not efficient as long as Hal wants to stay under the tax + the player development staff keeps getting the most out of big arms.
Josh
12:38
Only five games in, but the RISP numbers are once again alarming. Is this something to be concerned about given the previous 2 seasons and the fact that the roster hasn't changed much? Or just a small sample size blip?
Derek
12:38
Too soon to worry about.
Sam
12:39
Do you think German is a better No. 5 starter than Cortes? I understand cortes has more versatility, but don't we want the best starters going?
Derek
12:40
I think Cortes is better. German gives up too many HRs, and who knows when he'll be back anyway with this shoulder problem.
I'm not expecting a traditional fifth starter from the team this year, btw. Could be a lot of tandem starts, especially if someone like Schmidt continues to look good.
Anthony
12:41
Does Taillon walk after this year? If so, who do you sign to take his spot in the rotation?
Derek
12:41
Yeah, I don't think he's back. The Yankees will look for their next 4+ service time starter via trade
That's not to say they shouldn't bring him back, but I think it's reality.
Dan
12:42
What does Cortes have to do make you a true believer that he’s a bona fide starter that should remain in the rotation?  I assume if he repeats last year (sub-3 ERA) over 200 innings that would obviously do it, but where’s the line?
Derek
12:42
Feels like today is turning into Nestor Cortes chat, lol
12:44
I don't know if there's a line in the sand, but there's certainly no reason to take him out of the rotation in the near future.
Sorry that's not the answer you're looking for.
I need to refill my water, back in a minute.
Anthony
12:46
Any chance Boone doesn't finish his contract? One could only hope.
Derek
12:47
Certainly there's a chance. Cashman's contract expires this year, and while I'd be stunned if he leaves, it's not impossible. And if there was a new head of the FO, they'd probably want a new manager.
Dan
12:48
Barring an unforeseen injury / trade, is Hicks the odd man out come playoff time with the Towers outfield plus DJ + Gleyber in the lineup?
Derek
12:49
What if DJ or Gleyber hit like last season
12:50
Sorry, hit enter too soon. What I'm saying is: DJ or Gleyber could be the odd man out themselves, not just Hicks.
Sam
12:50
Is the fantasy infield Sweeney at 3b, Peraza at SS, Volpe at 2B and Wells at 1B? Of course Ben Rortvedt at catcher. And Presumably DJLM would still be bench rotation guy. The way the yankees are built - do you see this sort of rotation as the goal for the org (no FA's/no trading prospects). (I know the likelihood of all of them hitting at the same time or at all is like 1%)
Derek
12:51
I can't imagine the organization actually is planning on this. Even if they like to say how they are waiting on X prospect all the time, they are still realistic. At least one of those guys will fall short of expectations, get traded, etc.
