Hey all, thanks for coming by. Before we start, just wanted to apologize for no DoTF this week. I was not able to do it this weekend and couldn't get coverage for me. We'll try to pick it back up next week. With that out of the way, let's chat.

Given that Cortes and Severino likely are pitching under innings limits of some sort, what moves do you expect aside from German coming back do you expect the team to make if all else goes well come trade deadline?
Derek
12:03
I don't think either are under innings limits. Sevy has a club option for 2023 and I imagine the Yankees want maximize what they can get from him this year. As for Cortes, I don't expect him to rack up some big innings count. How many pitchers even reach 150 IP nowadays, anyway?
12:04
I really expect a bat or two before a pitching addition, anyway.

Hi Guys, I am confused by Boone's use of Chapman after he said that he will be used more in non-save opportunities this year, but then, he has only pitched twice this month.  What gives?  Thanks, Jerry

Beats me. Thought so too.

With the way that pitchers are throwing today, the umpire's job is harder than ever. However, it seems like 80% of the missed ball/strike calls are when the umpire calls a ball a strike. Could that be another major reason that offense is down? Will roboumps help?
Derek
12:06
I really doubt umps are to blame for offense much at all. It's the fact that pitchers are better than ever and the ball is dead.
Roboumps might help in a sense that it'll allow teams to not worry as much about defense behind the plate, so offense for catchers theoretically should improve and thereby lengthen lineups. I don't know how much of a difference it will make otherwise, though.

When do the Orioles become a team to consider? Rodriguez, Rutschman, and Hall probably all are in MLB this year. Henderson and Cowser next year and their current MLB roster isn't as bad as it has been recently.
Derek
12:08
They look better this year but there's a long way to go. They need to be more aggressive improving externally as these top prospects come up. If the Correa rumor was remotely true, that would be a good sign for them.

I know it’s more than 2 months away but what do you think we’ll look to do at the trade deadline?   Upgrade at catcher or center field?
Derek
12:10
Bat first. I've been saying I don't think a midseason catcher upgrade will happen because of the challenge to learn a new staff and build that rapport, but the offense from Yankees catchers has been sooo bad. 29 wRC+ bad, 3rd worst in the majors.
I'd like a CF-capable bat too.

IKF has stopped hitting.  Isn't it likely this is who he is?  A .250 hitter with no power who plays good defense?  If so, it it enough or should we upgrade by the time the trade deadline rolls around?
Derek
12:11
I think he's a guy who will go on wild BABIP streaks of virtually all singles.
Which is fine
12:12
As long as the rest of the lineup holds its own, and maybe they get one more deadline bat.
Tim
12:13
SSS, but Dominguez had a nice week.  Is he elevating more now?  Hitting hard groundballs has been his issue.
Derek
12:13
I haven't taken a close look at what he did last week, but groundballs and strikeouts are what will hold him back.
12:14
Be right back, switching laundry.
Andrew
12:16
What's the squad's biggest need right now?
Derek
12:16
Another hitter.
12:17
OF, IF, C, whatever. I know the offense as a whole has been good but I still worry about the 8/9 spots.
Greg
12:18
The team is on a 117 win pace now.  I expect some rough patches to come up.  Would 95 be expecting too little at this point?
Derek
12:18
They'd need to go 74-59 to win 95, or a 90 win pace over 162. Seems pretty doable to me.
Stephen
12:19
Which in-season call ups (if any) do you expect to potentially cause Boone to make decisions about playing time? It seems like there are already 4 outfielders and 5 infielders who need/deserve regulars reps.
Derek
12:20
Right now it doesn't look like the obvious position player prospects (Peraza/Volpe) close-ish to the majors are going to force this issue. That can change with time, obviously. If anything, I could see Donaldson losing PT to Gleyber/DJLM, though that's a little different than what you asked.
Dansby SwanSong
12:22
It's still early, but Johnny Lasagna hasn't looked right.  Should he be getting more low leverage spots until he figures it out?
Derek
12:23
The stuff still looks great, but the strike throwing has been an issue. Walk rate is way up, in zone rate way down. I could see a case for working the kinks out under less pressure by elevating Holmes, maybe. But I'm not worried yet.

12:23
Who do you think makes the All Star game at this point? Judge for sure, but who else?
Derek
12:23
Cortes and Rizzo are on the right track.
JJ
12:24
I know it is hard to change catchers in the middle of the season, but there was a discussion on BBTN that Contreras will definitely be moved. Any chance the NYY pursue him, or do they stick with their three in-house options?
Derek
12:25
There's definitely a chance. I think they are hoping to try Rortvedt as soon as he's healthy though before doing that.
Not that I would have high hopes for him either, but the bar is so low offensively for Higgy/Trevino. At least Trevino's defense has been really good.

12:26
Dead ball in the minors too?  It seems like many big hitting prospects are struggling (Volpe, Cruz, Moreno, etc.)
Derek
12:27
I'm not sure what's going on with the ball down there, but Volpe has been way better since a rough start. He's at 239/403/500 (155 wRC+) with more walks than strikeouts since 4/20
Stan
12:28
Waldichuck has taken the minors by storm.  Are you buying him as a top pitching prospect in the farm?
Derek
12:29
He definitely belongs in Triple-A. Dude's got 40 Ks in 23.2 innings with Somerset after tossing nearly 80 innings there last year. Anyway, that doesn't answer your question. He's been a noteworthy prospect in the system since at least last year. There's some relief risk though because his control isn't that great, but still - he should at the least be a late inning reliever.
Andrew
12:30
The catching situation still concerns me.  The A's have Murphy under control for a few more years and Langeliers in AAA.  How about a prospect for prospect trade of Peraza for Langeliers?  Trade value simulator says it's a fair deal.
