7 probably. It's hard to overcome a 35% K rate, 2% walk rate, and 60% ground ball rate.
12:25
He's 19 yeah, but those 3 marks scream approach overhaul needed.
Andrew
12:25
Who is your all time favorite prospect that didn't pan out?
Derek
12:25
When I was a kid I though Eric Duncan was the future, lol.
Cory
12:26
When Rordvet is ready does Trevino go down or Higgy? Part 2: which would you prefer and why?
Derek
12:26
Higgy is out of options, he's not going anywhere. Trevino will stay. Ben gets optioned I think.
Cory
12:26
Who’s had the better year so far, Donaldson or Gio? Odds Gio finishes with a better year are what? That’d make Cash look pretty bad.
Derek
12:27
Urshela has a 95 wRC+ and a .057 ISO. Donaldson has a 112 wRC+ though his strikeouts are up and power is down. So, Donaldson.
12:28
I think the deadened ball may have turned Gio from a solid regular to a solid fifth infielder.
Greg Bird

Lefty Bat
Derek
12:29
Yes, you are.
JT
12:30
at what positions would those bats be expected? does changing catchers mid season sound doable?
Derek
12:30
I wouldn't think about the position. Remember, the Yankees brought in Encarnacion when there was no obvious fit. If there's a big bat out there, go get it and figure it out later.

I thought Boone was in over his head in 2018, but he's grown on me.  His style resembles Torre of not getting too low or too high at any point.  And we know how the latter was called Clueless Joe before the dynasty run.
Derek
12:31
I just don't agree at all. And I think we have to stop comparing everything the Yankees do to the dynasty years. It's been two decades, nearly three now. Times are different.
12:32
Boone isn't a good tactical manager and there hasn't been much evidence that he gets the most out of his players, especially in recent seasons.
Cory
12:32
Let’s say Judge stays healthy up puts up another 2017 monster season. Do the Yankees offer more than what they already did? Do they quickly outbid every other team like they did for Cole.
Derek
12:32
I think they'd have to up their offer. Maybe $250M over 8 or something.
12:33
Letting him go would be a colossal mistake.
Mike
12:33
How about a move for Wilson Contreras or Sean Murphy at the deadline?
Guest
12:33
They going to live with no Off all year at C because of the very noticeable upgrade in D or do you think they make some sort of move at the deadline?
Derek
12:33
These two questions go together.
12:34
The one position I would doubt a midseason trade for is catcher. I just feel like it's hard to integrate a new everyday catcher midseason.
Lonn Trosts Moat
12:34
MTPS: Pereira, Wells, and Peraza for Castillo.  Send Cortes to the pen.  Rotation: Cole, Sevy, Castillo, Monty, Taillon
Derek
12:34
Why? The Yankees don't need another pitcher and Castillo has shoulder concerns. Pass.
12:35
And that's not a commentary on the offer. I just don't see the need for Castillo at this point.
AB
12:35
Do you think that there's any realistic opportunity for the Yankees to revisit the Judge long-term contract mid-season? Or does this inevitably get pushed to next Winter?
Derek
12:36
I don't think it's impossible. If the Yankees called up his agent and offered a deal his agent felt was a good and fair offer, the agent has to tell his client.
That said, this probably goes to the offseason. I just don't think Judge's camp would totally shut things down if the Yankees had a change of heart.

12:37
Andujar > Gallo right now. How long does this have to be a thing before he replaces him on the roster?
Derek
12:37
I don't agree at all.
Andujar is a major step down defensively, and how confident are you that he's actually a better hitter?
Tyler
12:39
If IKF slows down and Volpe heats up, would you be ok with the latter taking over at SS this year?  They say AA is the level where prospects distinguish themselves.
Westchester Dave
12:39
When German comes back, who do you see as being removed from the active rosgter and from the 40?
Derek
12:39
Oops, didn't mean to pick two questions in a row. I'll answer them separately.
I think IKF will slow down - he feels like a guy with huge peaks and valleys because his performance is very BABIP luck driven. I'd be very happy to see Volpe force the issue.
12:40
Not counting on it though. Just turned 21 and getting his first taste at Double-A.
David McKay is probably at the top of the 40 man chopping block, so him.
JL
12:42
Re: Boone, I think this is selective. I agree on the tactics but there are just so many players who have played far and away the best baseball of their lives under him (DJLM, Gio, Voit, most of the bullpen, Cortes, etc.)
Derek
12:43
But those guys you cited are either credits to the front office (Voit, DJLM) or hitting coaches (Gio). Bullpen/Cortes feel like player dev wins. The team was pretty lackadaisical and had awful fundamentals 2020-2021, and to me that reflects on Boone more than anything else.
