top starting pitcher you could see Sox realistically pursuing?
Tim Dierkes
9:49
Pablo Lopez
Rick Hahn
9:49
How long do I keep my job if this rebuild fails to get us beyond the first round?
Tim Dierkes
9:49
Even with Reinsdorf's legendary "loyalty," I'm a bit surprised Hahn still has his job after 2022.
Moncada
9:49
Is Moncada a potential trade candidate and what kind of trade value does he have?
Tim Dierkes
9:51
Going to be 28 years old, possible 3 years of control at high salaries, projections range from replacement level to a 4-5 WAR player.
9:52
That's...really tough to peg, value-wise, since the variance on what he might do over the next 2-3 years is so wide.  I think someone would be willing to take on the money and send over either non-top 100 type prospects, a similar disappointing veteran, or some combo of the two.
Scott
9:52
Are the White Sox really going to let Jose Abreu go? Tough to say they are competing while dumping their best player. I don't like the idea at all
Tim Dierkes
9:53
This impending free agency seems a lot different than the last one.  They know their outfield defense was terrible last year.  A lineup with Abreu, Vaughn, and Eloy in it puts one of those guys in a corner OF spot, so I guess they think letting Abreu leave is the only way to not repeat that.
I suppose you could re-sign Abreu and trade Vaughn.  I doubt that's their preference
Leury
9:53
What would it take to trade Garcia? 2/11M left and a ton of young utility INF in the org seems like an obvious trade to me
Tim Dierkes
9:53
I think it'd take eating half or more of the contract
who wouldn't shock you
9:53
as the opening day left-fielder?
Tim Dierkes
9:54
Benintendi, David Peralta
Are they counting
9:54
on Colas to be ready for RF? that still leaves a gap in LF... and Roberts can't stay healthy. What's the plan?
Tim Dierkes
9:55
I think the safe plan is to acquire two decent OF from outside the org.  Not sure they'll do it.  They are stuck with Pollock at $13MM
John
9:55
How much better shape would this team be in had they signed Harper in his FA year? They’ve spent the same amount of money per year on other players.
Tim Dierkes
9:55
So much better, but with Harper earning $25MM and still being awesome, you can make this argument for many teams.
Jeff
9:56
Is it safe to say that buying out a player's arbitration-eligible years in order to gain a couple extra years of would-be free agency isn't the greatest of ideas? Moncada (bad, injured), Robert (injured), Eloy (injured), Jimenez (injured), Anderson (injured)... I think I see a trend.
Tim Dierkes
9:57
I think on the whole, these deals have been a positive for teams.  I should also note that I thought these were smart moves when the White Sox did them.
Pretty sure they'll still come out way ahead on TA, even with injuries.  I can see Moncada possibly being a miss, and it's too early to call on Robert and Eloy.
9:58
Question would be if there was some way to know how injury-prone Robert and Eloy would be, and if the team is at fault for some portion of the IL days.  There is still time to fix this.  These guys are not old.

How can you possibly say the white sox should go for it in '23? They underachieved greatly due to poor depth and have shown huge flaws. Your goal should be to win a World Series not just get into the playoffs, this team showed they can't compete with the likes of the Astros, Dodgers, and even Yankees. Why would you not try to rebuild the right way? Get fresh faces in the front office and build it back up again. This core can not win built this way and there is no clear path in free agency to get there
Tim Dierkes
10:00
That logic doesn't make sense to me, especially in an October where the Phillies are in the World Series while the Dodgers and Mets didn't reach the NLCS.  Your goal actually should be to just get into the WS, because the winner of that tournament, is waaaay less predictable than people think it is.  I think some of the early exits this year were a good reminder of that.
Hahn did pretty well in his last rebuild, but hasn't put the right pieces around the young core.  Mostly just throws money at relievers.

Luzardo for Eloy? What say you?
Tim Dierkes
10:03
I suppose it could work as a swap of two players who both have significant injury concerns.  I feel like the Marlins have enough of this type of player, the poor fielding corner OF who needs to be at DH.
Aaron
10:03
Holy cow all these messages are people absolutely panicking. Chill the hell out everyone.
The Ghost of Bobby Thigpen
10:03
With Keuchel and Abreu off the books, wouldn't the White Sox best use of resources (assuming they aren't going to sign Nimmo or Rodon), be to use one of Sosa/Rodriguez/Romy at 2b, Colas in RF, and try to get Conforto on a pillow deal for LF, and someone to eat some innings in the rotation (Quintana, Manaea, etc.)?
Tim Dierkes
10:04
Instead of "best," I might say "most likely?"
MacD
10:04
Tim, I think the Phillies would disagree how much of a difference the manager makes!
Tim Dierkes
10:04
See, I actually don't think this proves anything about Joe Girardi or Rob Thomson.  I think that's just the easy narrative.
10:05
TLR was bad, most new managers would be better.  But this stuff is always overstated in the media
Jeff
10:05
What are the chances Hahn/Kenny pull a similar move this offseason like they did after the 2004 campaign (Carlos Lee for Podsednik and Luis Vizcaino), in order to get a more versatile offense/defense? If likely, who would be an ideal trade target (both outgoing and incoming)?
Tim Dierkes
10:07
This one's a little tough to figure out on the fly.  But I suppose it would be trading Eloy or Vaughn for a good defending OF.  Like, I dunno, Cedric Mullins or someone.
Kyle
10:07
outside of getting great health and career years from multiple players in 2005, the white sox have never been close to a world series. Why do Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn stay with no question's asked. Why? They have never proved anything to keep their jobs
Tim Dierkes
10:08
That's how Jerry Reinsdorf operates.  Loyal to a fault.  If you're old enough to have enjoyed 2005, then be happy you got one.
Of course, I am not saying you shouldn't hold the team accountable or hope for another.  More that the "low expectations" guy from earlier in this chat has a point
Dan C
10:08
Let’s be honest:  RF will be Colas in 2023.  Pollock’s going to opt in and man LF, Eloy should DH or even get reps at 1B.  Does this make Vaughn trade bait to get a solid 2B (Ketel Marte/Jazz Chisholm)?
Tim Dierkes
10:09
I assume the Sox still love Vaughn and want to see how he does at his natural position.  I can't really see trading him and letting Abreu walk, although I guess Sheets could play 1B.
