The white Sox are not really moving from Chicago are they?
Tim Dierkes
10:52
I need to brush up on the latest moving threats.  Generally speaking, until we stop giving owners public money for stadiums (stadia?), they're gonna keep going back to that well.  And part of the standard playbook is to threaten to move to Nashville or wherever.
10:53
Neil deMause's Field of Schemes website comes highly recommended: https://www.fieldofschemes.com/
Neil's takedowns of new stadium renderings usually have me laughing out loud
Trevor
10:53
Who are 2 pitchers you could realistically see fill out the Sox staff in 24?
Tim Dierkes
10:54
I suppose I can make two guesses from that big list I put up earlier.  One issue is that I don't have any history with Getz to know what he goes for.
10:55
I'll say Michael Lorenzen and Jakob Junis.  Junis for the Bannister connection maybe?  I assume they worked together

Do the White Sox think about bringing back GiO and Lopez? How about Madrigal?
Tim Dierkes
10:57
Of those three, Gio seems the least likely.  If I'm Gio I think I want a fresh start in a more pitcher-friendly environment even if it's without Ethan Katz.
10:58
Also, if you're looking for a Jack Flaherty connection, Katz was HS pitching coach of him and Gio: https://twitter.com/whitesox/status/1396955171557679104
Flaherty is a Boras client, it's worth noting.  He's about to turn 28 and we are thinking about putting three years on him.  I think Anthony is a proponent of that.

Given his past production, isn't $14 million worth taking a shot at keeping Anderson and hoping for a bounceback season?
Tim Dierkes
11:00
It's not crazy to think TA can be worth the $13MM net option price in 2024.  But I also think both parties should move on.  There's not much in the 2023 season that inspires confidence in TA.
John
11:00
It's a shame JR wants the team to compete quickly. Robert's value will never be higher and Cease still has trade value (though it would be defensible to hold him until the next trade deadline to see if he can come closer to his 2022 performance).
Tim Dierkes
11:01
Just coming out of a rebuild, going right into another one is just such a bad look.  Not that this White Sox team is good at PR or anything.  Robert is the main reason to watch the team currently.

11:01
Do you have any idea how angry fans are that we are keeping Grifol?
Tim Dierkes
11:02
I'm not sure if this is a rhetorical question?  Pretty angry.  And not conducting a real GM search is such a missed opportunity.
John
11:02
I disagree with the article's suggestions for BP help. If there's one thing the Sox do better than average, it's finding scrap-heap relievers and making them decent, even solid. I don't expect the team to compete next year, so I think they should focus on finding these relievers and flipping them at the deadline to further build their farm.
Tim Dierkes
11:03
I can think of Gregory Santos, but what would be other recent examples of the White Sox turning scrap heap relievers into something good?  But I wouldn't say I was recommending those higher-priced RPs.  More saying that if that's where Getz shops, those are the guys.  I would indeed recommend scrap heap shopping, given that the team is likely to be bad next year.
Realized I didn't really address the ideas of bringing back Reynaldo or Madrigal.
11:04
Yes - trading for Madrigal makes a lot of sense to me.  Cubs don't need a 2B and he's miscast at third.
I think Reynaldo will be fairly popular, but if I'm wrong and he takes two years, I don't see why not.  They had some success together.  Not sure what the player wants after being on three teams this season.
John
11:04
I like the hiring of Barfield and am hopeful Bannister is capable, but why on earth would the Sox hire Watson? The Royals' rebuild failed even harder than the Sox' did, so why are the Sox poaching Royals personnel as if they were the Rays or Dodgers?
Tim Dierkes
11:05
This is a safe space for venting.  I don't think we have come up with a good reason to poach Royals personnel.
John
11:05
Tim Anderson should be let go. I know the Sox are better when he plays well, but he seems like such a me-first clubhouse cancer that a reset without him feels necessary. Any chance the Sox can get rid of all their clubhouse cancers in just one offseason?
Tim Dierkes
11:06
I'm always hesitant to label players as clubhouse cancers.  I do sense that TA is not well-liked around the game, but I'm not sure I've seen his teammates go on record with negative stuff about him.
Fair to say this player comes with baggage, though, on top of a really bad season.
And lengthy injury history
John
11:06
Are you expecting bigger seasons from Moncada and Bummer, given they're going into contract years?
Tim Dierkes
11:07
I expect a better year from Bummer, because he's not 6.79 ERA bad and there are some good things in his profile still.  But I don't think the contract year theory has been proven.
Andrew C
11:08
Will Dylan Cease be moved? How much would he be worth?
Tim Dierkes
11:08
I lean toward no, if the team has designs on being decent next year.  I suppose they could exchange him for two MLB players and make the case they're in better shape as a team.

I'm playing with my offseason armchair GM Sox plan :-)   One idea - Hendriks option for $15m makes sense to pick up because the alternative costs the same, just over a long period. Is there a chance that they pick his option up and can make him a bullpen coach-type while he stays on the IL?
Tim Dierkes
11:11
That's an interesting idea.  I think a more likely path might be to decline the option to spread out the buyout, and then do a new two-year deal with him if they want to have him for '25.

11:11
Do the Sox man up and eat the cash with players like Moncada, Eloy or do we have to sit and watch them half ass it (when they are actually healthy enough to play) for another year.
Tim Dierkes
11:12
Eloy I think is moveable without eating cash.  Moncada probably not, even in a really bad position player free agent market.  Maybe see if he can have a nice first half.
Jerry Reinsdorf
11:12
Why dont I like to spend money on top tier free agents?
Tim Dierkes
11:13
Jerry doesn't do enough interviews to be able to dig into that.  It is because he didn't like how Albert Belle worked out?  He's always been on the side of player salaries being too high, and that dates back more than 30 years.

My chats are not sending for some reason?
Tim Dierkes
11:14
They are sending!  But I look through and publish questions and then you see them here if I do.
