Will there be a Sox Fest this year?  They owe some accountability.
Tim Dierkes
11:15
I don't think that is known yet.  That would be a nice step toward accountability - take in boos and tough questions with grace.  On the other hand, I have heard Chris Getz speak, and like most modern GMs he does not say anything of substance.  But if you want to pay to yell at Sox execs, I get it.

White Sox are totally offering me a NRI at a minimum right? Former KC Royal. Longtime ago prospect.

I agree that the Sox have bigger problems than Benintendi, but what do you think about the bounce-back potential of an established quality regular in his prime who faceplanted in what his record suggests should have been a step-forward season? Is there much precedent to point to? Any salient parallels that might be predictive for 2024?
Tim Dierkes
11:17
I don't know that there was enough in his age-27/2022 season - the one with five HR - to say 2023 should've been a step forward.  It'd be hard to have expected more than a 122 wRC+ from his bat.
11:18
I'd need more time to find some decent parallels.  To your general point though, certainly players are not at all linear season-to-season and just regression to the mean says Benny is better than this.
John

Will we ever get the leap forward we've expected from Vaughn? Even the most pessimistic among us didn't expect him to get worse moving to 1B full-time.
Tim Dierkes
11:20
Vaughn is at least younger than Benny, but they both have the first-round pedigree.  It's just not really knowable how much more there is to Vaughn.  A credible 1B is going to have to draw more walks and hit for more power, to state the obvious.
Katz's guys
11:20
If Ethan Katz stays on the coaching staff, can Giolito and Flarhety come in on a package deal? If Gio comes back, I assume ReyLo has to be part of it as well.
Tim Dierkes
11:21
That'd be fun, although Gio and Flaherty do not share the same agent/agency.  Gio and Reynaldo do though, and yes, they are only allowed to change teams together.

Do the Sox pick up Anderson’s option? Also, when do you reasonably see Colson Montgomery making his debut?
Tim Dierkes
11:22
My guess on the option is no.  With Colson, I wonder if with a nice spring training they'll let him make the team, just to have some positive vibes and a shot at a draft pick.  That said he's got 37 games at Double-A so from the player's standpoint it should be mid to late summer and only if he's progressing.
Zach
11:22
Zack Greinke would fit the White Sox ideal of getting great players way past their prime (Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez, just to name two) and former Royals. Go get him, Getzy!
Chandler
11:22
Adam Frazier?
Tim Dierkes
11:23
I see him as a logical 2B target for the White Sox.

With how much Giolito struggled after being traded, do you think his value has dropped enough to perhaps set up a return to the Sox? Or is Gio on the Sox over for good?
Tim Dierkes
11:24
If I'm Gio I'm looking for two years with an opt-out, similar to the deal Carlos Rodon signed with the Giants.  I'm not sure the White Sox would like that downside risk at a high-ish AAV.

Dream with me for a second and say the Saudi PIF takes control of the Sox tomorrow. How much of a premium would it take to get Shohei to sign here instead of the teams he's typically linked to?
Tim Dierkes
11:24
I have wondering this same thing as a thought exercise.
11:25
I currently think Shohei will get around $525MM.  My gut says the White Sox situation would be so repellent to him that he'd need $700MM?
11:26
But even then, for some people and situations there is no price, right?  What's another $175 mil when you've got that much?
There's not an amount of money you could offer me to like, sell one of my kids, so I don't know that there's an amount you could offer to Shohei to get him.
11:27
Maybe an ownership stake in the team, ability to participate in front office decisions, and the signing of Yamamoto, Bellinger, and a other stars would do the trick.

what are some ss options for Sox in trades? FA market looks bare
Tim Dierkes
11:28
The trade market is just as bare.  I'm trying to find one.  Jorge Mateo?
John
11:28
Should Sox just take flyers on a bunch of injury / bounceback candidates so they can hopefully flip them at the deadline? Potentially expensive if it fails, but if it's successful, could rebuild their farm quickly.
Tim Dierkes
11:29
Yes, I think that's more viable than signing Jordan Montgomery or something.
Zach
11:30
Considering the Sox are cheap, need to fill rotation spots, and jumped at the chance to sign Mike Clevinger, could they target bringing Trevor Bauer back from Japan?
Tim Dierkes
11:31
Hmm.  Stranger things have happened.  Maybe you could argue that fans are already really unhappy, so the risk they'd be unhappier is low?  I don't know how Jerry feels about Bauer and all that stuff though.
If you are a Sox fan - would you like them to sign Trevor Bauer?

To me, immediately hiring Getz without even taking the time to interview people from outside the organization seems like laziness on the part of Reinsdorf. Is this a case of hiring from loyalty or Reinsdorf being unwilling to seriously put together a winning team?
Tim Dierkes
11:32
Jim Margalus at Sox Machine is my favorite White Sox writer.  I think he called it both lazy and arrogant.
11:34
Jim likes to cite an old Cigar Aficianado interview Jerry did: https://soxmachine.com/2023/05/jerry-reinsdorf-wont-evolve-which-is-wh...
John

Will the Sox ever make a significant investment (in both money and actually listening to) analytics? Or will we have to wait until JR no longer owns the team?
Tim Dierkes
11:34
I expect we'll have to wait.  Getz does not seem like that type of leader.

Am I THE guy or just A guy?
Tim Dierkes
11:35
Even "a" guy is kind of generous after 2023.  The dude was demoted during a meaningless September.  He's got a ways to go to become an interesting RF candidate again.  What a difference a year makes.

How many of the top free agents would the WS need to sign to be legitimate contenders?
Tim Dierkes
11:38
I think if they signed all of MLBTR's top five, they'd be a contender: Ohtani, Bellinger, Yamamoto, Snell, Matt Chapman.  Might need Montgomery as well, I dunno.  It seems like they'd need to add 20 WAR.
