With the news that Cashman's contract is expired, what is the next course of action?
Darragh McDonald
4:07
Everything I've read suggests that this is not an issue.
The same thing happened in 2017.
4:08
Cashman's contract expired but he just kept working until a new deal was worked out in December.
All the NY media people seem to be assuming that will happen again, or something similar.
What time on 11-4?
4:08
You never post times
Darragh McDonald
4:08
Sorry about that. It can be hard to pin down sometimes because we're also covering breaking news at the same time.
4:09
I had intended to do this chat this morning, but then I had the Rizzo and Severino news to write about, among other things.

Fernando Tatis in pinstripes next year... Why not?
Darragh McDonald
4:11
Tatis has a full no-trade clause.
Besides that, I doubt the Padres would move him while his value is at a temporary low. It would make more sense to let him come back and prove he's still really good.
4:12
And his full no-trade becomes a ten-team no-trade in the last few years of his deal. Easier to trade him then, theoretically.
Set an alarm for 2029.

Given age/injury do you think Matt Carpenter gets a major league deal?
Darragh McDonald
4:12
I think so, yeah.
He was just so good when healthy, someone will take a flier.

I read somewhere that Donaldson's 2024 option vested if he got traded but I haven't seen this on any trusted sites. Do yo know if it did or not?
Darragh McDonald
4:13
Let me check on this, but I don't think it's that it vests. It's that the numbers change.
4:14
"One-time assignment bonus: $2M paid by acquiring club, with 2024 option becoming a $16M mutual option with a $6M buyout, payable only if declined by the club."
So, the 2024 club option is now a mutual option because he was traded from the Twins to the Yankees.
4:15
And I guess he already got a portion of his buyout.

This is probably going to be the most asked question of the chat: what’re your thoughts on IKF, do you think he’ll be starting next year or should a guy like Peraza or Cabrera overtake him?
Darragh McDonald
4:16
I think it makes sense to hang onto IKF. If one of the kids takes the job by Opening Day, he's a fine utility guy to have around.
If not, he can hold the job until Pereza/Cabrera/Volpe take it.
But if they really believe in the kids, they could also move on.
We saw the Astros believed in Pena enough to just let Correa go.
4:17
But they at least had Aledmys Diaz around for emergencies.
The Catfish
4:19
Would the Yankees entertain trading one of the young Shortstops?
Darragh McDonald
4:19
I would guess that's more of a long-term thing.
4:20
They'll have 2023 to see if anyone takes the job. If, say, Peraza seems like your everyday shortstop, maybe Volpe could become a trade chip, or the other way around.

When will MLB discontinue the soft salary caps and be more like the player friendly NFL?  It’s not our fault lesser cities are tryna compete with us!
Darragh McDonald
4:21
A new CBA was just agreed to in March and the luxury tax lines moved up a decent amount.
Cashman
4:22
What do the Yankees do with DJ and Gleyber? Trade gleyber for a starter and let DJ play 2nd?
Darragh McDonald
4:22
I think it makes sense to keep DJL in the utility role where he plays almost everyday but you can give him a break if you need to.
4:23
He's going to be 34/35 next year and there's still three years on his deal after that. Probably want to do some "load management," as they say.
Bob Dylan
4:24
Brian Cashman: No world series since 2009. Prior teams ( '98,99,2000) were constructed mostly by Stick Michael. Does he deserve a new contract, as, the Yankees consider the season a failure if no World Series?
Darragh McDonald
4:24
Big fan of your work, Mr. Dylan.
4:25
As to the Cashman thing, like I said before, they've been above .500 every year since 1992. I think that says more about his performance than the lack of titles.
Ross
4:25
I know Trevino won a GG, but him and Higgy were pretty poor offensively. Do you think the Yankees make a trade for Sean Murphy?
Darragh McDonald
4:25
I can see Murphy, sure. He's good on both sides of the ball.
