At the trade deadline, which teams are most likely to be out of contention and have a starting pitcher or LFer who could be acquired for Gleyber Torres?
Darragh McDonald
11:23
Torres is a bit tricky because he's a free agent after 2024, so a rebuilding team won't have much interest. That would limit the Yanks to a contender-contender trade, like the Bader-Montgomery deal.
Those can certainly happen but I think it's more likely they strike separate deals.

I am a die-hard Yankees fan and I honestly think our season COMPLETELY hinges in injuries. Between Stanton, Rizzo, LeMahieu, Rodon, Sevy, Cortes, and Montas, we could EASILY be the best team in baseball and...we could also miss the playoffs. Am I right in thinking that the injuries play this bid a role?
Darragh McDonald
11:25
Yeah, this is my thinking as well. Lots of talent but the error bars seem to be wide.

11:25
what are the odds they just extend gleyber?
Darragh McDonald
11:26
I would bet against it. I think the plan is for Peraza/Volpe to take over the middle infield.
11:27
Torres is already making 9.95 million this year and will get another arbitration bump next year. He might not be worth too much more than that. Phillies declined a 17 million option on Segura, for instance.

New York winning the East, or will there be more competition this year?
Darragh McDonald
11:29
I think the division is the strongest in baseball, personally. All five teams are at least half decent. Yanks could certainly win it and are probably the favorite, but it won't be easy.

Hats off to the Yankees for giving Volpe a shot right out of the gate this year. Not every organization would have the guts to try it.

We're starting to see more of this with the new CBA. The Mariners got an extra draft pick because they promoted J-Rod last year and he won Rookie of the Year. This season, we've seen Volpe, Jordan Walker and Oscar Colas get Opening Day nods. But I agree it's great to see.

At this point I am open to a minor deal in Scranton?  How about a reunion?
Darragh McDonald
11:32
I feel like this would have happened already if he were open to it.

Is it fair to say yanks want to compete Mets want to win regardless of cost
Darragh McDonald
11:33
Feels like an oversimplification to me. Every team has a budget. The Mets didn't get every free agent they wanted.
I believe they're the top two payroll teams right now, so they're both trying really hard to win.

Anyway I can get traded to the Yankees this season? I heard that Oswald Peraza kid in a package could be available for the Pirates?
Darragh McDonald
11:35
I would be pretty surprised if they traded Peraza.

Should the Yankees trade Donaldson or Hicks what do you think they could get in return?
Darragh McDonald
11:36
I think the Yanks would be happy to trade them but neither has much value right now, given their contracts.

Sevy last year here ?
Darragh McDonald
11:37
It is the last year of his deal, so it's certainly possible. I could also see a scenario where he gets a QO and accepts because he still wasn't fully healthy.

Is it really Clarke Schmidt Breakout SZN?
Darragh McDonald
11:39
I can see it, sure. He's got good peripherals in the minors.
Always gets healthy amounts of strikeouts and ground balls.

MLB wants to shorten game times yet the new rules, i.e. fostering more offense via no shifts, larger bases, etc., seems to be at cross purposes. More runs and longer innings = longer game times.
Darragh McDonald
11:41
I think MLB would be fine if the new rules resulted in similar game lengths, but less dead time and more action.
However, all the minor league data seems to suggest that the rules will result in overall game times being 20-30 minutes shorter, on average.
The Poll

Anyway we can vote on who’s winning the AL East in 2023?
Darragh McDonald

I feel the Yankees will run away with the poll, but let's see.

Montas was clearly damaged goods and Rodon is already hurt. Something to worry about with the team's medical evaluation or do these things just happen?
Darragh McDonald
11:45
I don't know if there's enough for a worrying pattern there. Rodon has always had some injury concerns that every team knew about, but he still got lots of interest as a free agent because he's very good. He's hurt now but it doesn't look like he's going to miss the season or anything.
Nats signed Strasburg right after he just won them the World Series and he's been pretty useless since. I think signing any pitcher to a big deal comes with this kind of risk.
