I think they'll be at the table, sure. Some people say Ohtani prefers West Coast, but I'm sure he and his reps will say he's open to signing anywhere. No reason to close off any bidders.

Volpe’s final 2023 numbers?  I worry about that BA..  .250 in the minors.

I wouldn't focus on batting average too much. He hit 21 homers last year and also walked at a good clip. For a 21-year-old at Double-A and Triple-A, he seemed to do very well overall.

Why are they averse to the luxury tax? Their billions in profits isn't high enough? And taxpayers paid for the stadium.
Darragh McDonald

Yeah, the luxury tax thing feels arbitrary. Going over the last line leads to extra taxes but doesn't cost draft picks or anything like that.
But I guess every team has to set a line somewhere.

Is a trade before tomorrow’s opener in the works?
Darragh McDonald

Boone's comments are weirdly kinda noncommittal on the final roster spots, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were working on something.

Why didn't the Yankees re-sign Chad Green? He's been so good for them and didn't sign for much help me not be upset about it
Darragh McDonald
11:52
Well, it might be the luxury tax thing. The Yanks are really close to the line that they apparently don't want to cross. Green didn't cost much but it's still a 4.25MM CBT hit.
11:53
I agree that Green is pretty underrated.

Instead of a trade, is a Britton reunion in the works?  If I'm not mistaken, the roster spot is for a 13th Pitcher, no?
Darragh McDonald
11:53
I don't think they'd sign Britton and just add him to the big league roster right away. He'd probably need some kind of spring ramp-up.
11:54
He had a few showcases and no one has signed him, so, maybe he still hasn't got his stuff all the way back? I don't know.
It's hard to believe that he would still be out there if he looked like the Britton of old.

Any under the radar LF or SP additions (besides Reynolds and the Brewers pitchers) we should be keeping an eye on?
Darragh McDonald
11:57
I don't know about under the radar, but there are certainly other SPs who should be available at the deadline. Boyd and Lorenzen from the Tigers. Maybe Giolito if the White Sox are struggling. Same for Bieber and the Guardians. Rich Hill, Vince Velasquez, Marcus Stroman, Sean Manaea, Ross Stripling, Alex Wood. It all depends who's selling.
Getting Chris Sale from Boston probably won't happen, but that would be fun if it did.

While adding Rodon is exciting (even as he's an injury risk) it seems like the Yankees punted on the real weak spots on the roster (LF, 3B). I'm dubious that this team is really substantially better than last year. Am I wrong? Was this a case of upgrading where they could because they couldn't find an upgrade they liked for their real positions of weakness?

It's true that the roster is going to be fairly similar, apart from Rodon.
12:01
But it's reasonable to expect that they'll get some kind of boost from within, either from Volpe or Peraza, depending how things go. And Rodon is a great addition if he's healthy.

Okay, I have to get back to the main site, unfortunately. Sorry for all the questions I didn't get to. This was easily the busiest of all these chats I've done.

I hope you're all excited for the season to start tomorrow. I know I am. I think it's going to be fun, especially in the AL East.
