Yankees Outlook '23

Would Torres for Lane Thomas be a feasible trade? Seems like it would solve both teams’ areas of need.
Mark P
3:20
The Nationals aren't really trying to win in 2024, so they have no need for one year of Torres

There is no single player who fits what the Yankees need more than Ohtani. LHB, top of the rotation starter, revenue generating popularity. Tell me the Yankees won't sit out his free agency like they did Harper, Seager, Machado, and Correa????
Brian
3:22
Any chance the Yankees go all out on Ohtani?
Mark P
3:23
Ohtani is such a special player that the Yankees will surely go after him.  Whether they're willing to outbid what will be record offers from multiple teams remains to be seen.
Or, of course, whether Ohtani has an interest in being a Yankee

Will the Yankees prioritize left-handed hitting this offseason? The lineup balance has been terrible for years now. Rizzo coming back adds one lefty. I could see Kevin Kiermaier until Dominguez is back. There needs to be more.
Mark P
3:27
The right-handed tilt of the lineup has been one of the biggest head-scratchers in baseball over the last few years.  It's not like teams can't succeed with a righty-heavy lineup, but even with a team like the Astros, their LH bats are big boppers like Alvarez, Tucker, and Brantley.

Relying on basically just Rizzo doesn't make much sense.  Austin Wells is an important player in this regard, because he can step up as a good regular immediately, there's another quality LH bat for the lineup

Please tell me cashman won’t trade him, he’s been one of our most productive players. What are the chances they resign him and what would it cost? If they trade him what would they get in return?
Mark P
3:28
MLBTR's Anthony Franco recently looked at how Torres' trade market could shape up, and the answer might be....not as much as you'd think
As for re-signing Torres in free agency, it's doubtful due to Peraza and Volpe

Have you ever been to Yankee Stadium, or New York?
Mark P
3:29
I've been to NY a couple of times, awesome city.  I saw a game at the old Yankee Stadium in 2007 but I haven't been to the newer park yet.

Do the Yankees get keirmaier for center field and at what cost? He seems like the only option if they don’t land bellinger
Mark P
3:30
Kiermaier might have put himself in position for a multi-year contract, which the Yankees might be a little wary about signing.  But, if he's open to one or two years, I agree, he makes a ton of sense for their needs

yankees need a good homerun celebration to get back on track any suggestions

In a tribute to former Yankee employee George Costanza...

Whenever a Yankee players hit a home run, he should stand at one end of the dugout and suddenly shout "fire, FIRE!"  Then he should run to the other end of the dugout, theatrically pushing teammates out of the way, until the player makes it down the other tunnel.  Bonus points if the Yankee hire actors dressed as a clown and as an old lady for the player to also shove out of the way during the journey

Volpe for Pfaadt?
Mark P
3:33
Arizona already has Jordan Lawlar on the rise

Will the Yankees actually play the kids for a full year in 2024 (i.e. guys like Peraza, Wells, Dominguez when healthy, Pereira, etc.)?  What is a realistic option for them to keep the seat warm in CF until Dominguez gets back?
Mark P
3:36
As much as the Yankees could or should show faith in their prospects, making them ALL everyday regulars carries some obvious risk. This is a team that still wants to contend, and has no patience for bridge years or "step-back" years.

That said, taking the pulse of Yankees fans....would you be okay with such a season?

Does Michael King end the 2024 season as the Yankees 2nd best SP behind Cole?
Mark P
3:38
I'm a little biased by this as a Jays fan, since King basically pitches like Greg Maddux every time he faces Toronto.  But King has a lot of potential, and I fully agree with the Yankees' plan to at least stretch him out and give him a full shot in the rotation

Do you think part of the calculous for keeping Boone is that if they DO fire Brian after 2024 they want the new GM to be able to hire a new manager?
Mark P
3:41
This is a possibility.  Again, by all accounts Steinbrenner has full trust in Cashman, and there isn't any indication that a firing is imminent even in another year's time.

The Yankees went through a rough stretch without Judge.  How different do you think the season would be if he stayed healthy all year? How does that impact planning for next year?
Mark P
3:43
What seems positive about this situation is that the Yankees seem to recognize that their issues ran deeper than just injuries.  If Judge had been healthy, it's quite possible they would've ended up in the playoffs.  But, it doesn't seem like NYY is chalking it up to bad luck and moving ahead with the same old strategies.

Best-case scenario, missing the playoffs ends up being a wakeup call for the organization

I realize that a trade of six years of Dominguez for one year of Soto might be unwise, but in the sense that it would give the Yankees a head start in extending Soto next offseason, could such a trade be justified?
Mark P
3:45
Dominguez's injury might make such an offer impractical from the Padres' view. As promising as Dominguez is, San Diego isn't going to be keen on the idea of moving Soto for a guy with coming off a TJ surgery
Judge's Jury
3:46
What are the chance they go ahead and do a complete tear down? Release all the aging contracts- LeMahieu, Stanton, etc. and basically tank and make plans to go after certain high level younger free agents in a year or two? Sacrifice one year entirely to not have to patch work it endlessly.
Mark P
3:47
Next to zero that they embark on such a teardown.  It kind of makes sense on paper, even at the cost of a year of Judge/Cole's primes.  But the Yankees might think they're an internal correction (whether it's figuring out the analytical element, or getting better health, or having a rookie or two break out, etc.) away from being right back in the mix next year

1-5 give us LH bats that make sense to acquire
Mark P
3:49
Kiermaier, Brantley, Heyward, Pederson, or switch-hitter Candelario
Mike King
3:49
Do you think the Yankees are making a mistake in converting Mike King into a starter?  The Red Sox tried this with Garrett Whitlock, and he got hurt as a starter.  Maybe leave King in the role he's already excelling at?
Mark P
3:49
This is a fair point, and King's ultimate role might hinge on whether or not the Yankees get another starter in the offseason (especially if it's someone big like Yamamoto).
3:50
In a sense, there's no real harm (apart from injury risk, of course) in at least trying out King at a starter, since he can always fall back on relief work
Ben
3:50
What are the odds keynan middleton returns???
Mark P
3:51
Pretty decent.  He wouldn't cost a ton, and (though every player says they love their team) Middleton said he loved playing in NY.

IF (big if) Trout was made available, would The Martian, Thorpe, Peraza, Pereira, and Brito be laughed at or taken seriously?
