I can't seem to get work experience and I need it for the course I thinking of attending. I'm not sure what to do?

If you missed the deadline to book in for freshers week what can we do to make up for it? Will we get the chance to do it some other time or can we do something about it now?
AvatarMolly

Hey @Karolina - there is a dedicated careers centre at Leeds, they offer things like mock interviews, CV and cover letter help and employability workshops, as well as having an online list of internships and other paid opportunities you can apply to with Leeds' partner companies and institutions
4:10
@Karolina you can also get help from them after you graduate if you need to!
AvatarJames Leslie
4:10
@Guest - if you email reachforexcellence@leeds.ac.uk and let us know what you would have signed up for we can see if we have any spaces left :) alternatively, our next events after Freshers will be at Easter

Hi, I missed the initial induction day could you tell me a bit more about the summer school please
AvatarHaaroon
4:10
@Rahima, you can do virtual work experience if you are finding it hard to get face to face work experience We'll be offering lots of help through the year through events and emails signposting you to further information

Thank you @Molly

I have a question about accommodation; When you apply for student accommodation, do you have any control over who your roommates are? (For example, if 2 friends both got accepted to Leeds, is there any possibility of sharing accommodation, or would it be more sensible to privately rent elsewhere?) Thanks.

Will we be able to visit the campus when the lockdown restrictions are eased
AvatarMatthew
4:12
Hi @Ethan. Good question. The best way is to start adjusting bit by bit as soon as possible during your A-level study. Try to start taking more responsibility for your learning and be more independent if you can. Maybe start researching a topic area on your preferred course...that way things won't seem as much of a shock when you make the transition.
Abbie S

What would you say is the best thing about the University of Leeds?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:12
@Sundus - we know how important it is for people to access face to face activity and visit universities. As soon as government guidance allows, we will be able to re-open. It may take us a little longer to organise visits again as we have now been working from home for nearly a year but we are a face to face scheme so as soon as we can, we will welcome you to visit!

Hi @Amy - the summer school is a 5-day 4-night residential on campus at the University of Leeds. You stay in halls, attend loads of academic and personal development sessions, as well as fun evening activities too! Last year's summer school still went ahead despite the 'rona too - we moved online and everyone still got the chance to attend lots of different events and fun activities with us :)

Do you think RFE would be able to do some focused sessions on food and cooking at Uni for the first time?
AvatarHaaroon
4:13
@Guest, there isn't any guarantee who your flat mates will be. You may be able to state your preference as to which friends you'd like to share with but again there isn't any guarantee you'd get placed together. Yes, you can rent privately in your first year.

Is living alone at Uni a viable option? What are studio flats really like?
Mehroz S
4:14
Meaning the apprenticeship through university which would result in a degree by the end of it
AvatarJames Leslie
4:14
@Anon Yes we do offer events on cooking and first year uni. its part of Get Set For Uni Part 3 in October when you are in Year 13 and really starting to think about getting ready for uni :)
Amy F
4:14
Thank you @Molly , sorry my message sent twice
AvatarMolly
4:15
@Mehroz - your schedule on a degree apprenticeship varies depending on the company and the year of study you're in. Typically you might be in uni 2-3 days a week and working the rest of the time
AvatarMatthew
4:15
Hi @Abbie. That's a really good question and a hard one to answer! I'm sure each of the team would have a different answer, but I'd probably say one of the things I like best is the campus. It's a really cool place to spend the working day and there's always loads going on. Plus, there's loads of green space to relax in when the sun is out!
Zara M
4:15
Hi, If in March all RfE events take place in person will it follow a similar schedule to February's freshers week in terms of sessions on offer?
AvatarMolly
4:16
@Mehroz - we've previously had RfE sessions from PwC about their Computer Science degree apprenticeships, and are looking to do so again, so if this is up your street please keep an eye out!
AvatarHaaroon
4:16
@Anon, yes living alone is an option. It's unlikely we the University of Leeds would have studio flats, we currently don't have any and don't see this changing. You would have to rent privately for a studio flat. Studio flats may be expensive compared to student halls but it's personal choice

Hi, does studying a year abroad increase tuition fees?
Eleanor W
4:16
Do you think it is best to choose a course that is very specific or one that covers a wide subject area?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:17
@Zara - each event block is different but will always have a mix of the different colour categories of events we run. You can expect to see more academic tasters in areas that might not have been covered already. Sometimes we also run repeats or similar sessions in popular areas. We will also have Part 2 of some events as they follow a suite. for example Get Research Ready has 4 parts across the 2 years and Get Set For Uni has 3
Mehroz S
4:17
@Molly oh right that makes sense and thank you!
Mohammed W
4:17
Can i just ask where do you place the code in the email is it the subject?.
Rahima Begum
4:17
For the cooking events, for food we're taught to cook what if you have food restrictions or things you can't eat.
AvatarJames Leslie
4:18
@Rahima - we wouldn't force you to eat anything you didn't want to or couldn't - don't worry!
Ruqqaya B
4:19
what does and doesn't count towards event attendance?
AvatarHaaroon
4:19
@Mohammed W, you can put the code in the main body or the subject
AvatarMolly
4:19
Hey @Karolina - it actually reduces them for the year that you're away, but it also means an extra year of your course. You still just pay tuition to Leeds, not to the institution you're studying abroad at, so it's not like doing a whole degree as an international student if that makes sense?
