this is @ haroon in particular because i'd appreciate a POC perspective, any tips for convincing traditional parents to let you move out to Uni? my South Asian mother is very against the idea and it's never been done before in any of my family

@Molly yes thank you. That's good to know

For the people who are wanting to study law is there work experience involved in the course? Thanks.
AvatarMatthew

Hi @Eleanor. That really depends on a number of things...what your main areas of interest are, what you're hoping to go on and do afterwards... Obviously the more narrow you go, the narrower your options will be afterwards (no bad thing if you have a career path in mind), but if you do something too general you may struggle to know exactly what to do afterwards. If you're unsure at this stage though, it's probably best to keep your options open with something more general.

@Amy - there is an option at Leeds to undertake a Year in Industry, which is a full 12 months out of your degree between second and final year to undertake one or more work placements, usually between 3 and 12 months each

What if we ant to change the course I'm doing when I get to uni.
Amy F
4:26
How many people usually live in a uni flat together? Or does it differ?
AvatarMolly
4:26
@Anon - best bet is to attend loads of taster sessions and see what you can get a feel for! They're super different courses, so you need to think about whether you want to go  down the essay-writing and reading/researching route, as you would be with Law, or if you'd rather go into STEM and be more patient focussed. Both are hugely time-intensive and competitive courses at uni, so you do need to make sure you're making the right choice for you!

Hi! I was just wondering if you have any info about what studying psychology at leeds would be like?
AvatarHaaroon

@Anon, I’d make a list of the main concerns your mother/parents have of you moving out. And I’d sit with them and address them, for example is your family concerned about late nights etc. I’d focus on the positive side of things, such as being closer to university/less commuting, the fact that you are an adult, you’re mature etc. Also try and understand your parents point of view, they are more likely to be worried so my main tip would be try and ease their nerves and focus heavily on the positives of moving to university.
Get your parents to engage with projects, there is a lot of information out there for them. For example: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/info/128011/parents_and_carers/277/supporting_y...

@Amy F - it really does differ - at Leeds we have flats for students that contain anything from 4 students to 12! in Year 13 we will start looking at accommodation :)
AvatarMolly
4:28
Hey @Caitlin - are you coming to our Global Perspectives in Psychology event next week? This would be a great way to get a feel for Psychology at Leeds - we've got some current UoL Psychology students booked to work that event as well so you'll be able to pick their brains!
AvatarMatthew
4:28
Hi @ R.B. That's perfectly possible, provided you meet the prerequisites for the other course and you apply within the deadline. I changed from BA French/Economics to straight French in my first year for example. That said, you shouldn't rely on being able to do this and the course you choose should be something you really want to do.
Amy F
4:30
Thank you James and does it get decided randomly who you’ll be sharing the flat with?
R. B
4:31
Do we get train passes for leeds
AvatarMatthew
4:31
Hi @R.B. What do you mean?
R. B
4:32
Like for travel fees
Caitlin T
4:32
@Molly Yep i'm going the Global Perspectives in Psychology event! I'll ask more questions then, thankyou!
AvatarMolly
4:33
@Amy - not completely random, but there is an element of that! You apply for accommodation and at Leeds can select various criteria to prioritise - such as being on/off campus, noisy/quiet, single/mixed sex, specific religious conditions etc, and then the Uni allocate you to a flat with other people based on the things you have prioritised

Will events be less accessible once they're in person? I really like how with the current system I'm able to watch multiple lectures from my home without too much worry about times and travel. I understand the desire to take things to Uni, but I also really do prefer this way of doing things. Will there be a middle ground in the future or is it either entirely online/entirely in person?
AvatarMatthew
4:34
The University won't make any provision for your personal travel to and from campus @R.B.

After looking on different sites, I found that some engineering courses at Leeds (ie aerospace) have entry requirements of A*AA (or similar), with an A* in maths/physics. With the reduced offer from A2L, would this become an AAB or an A*BB?
R. B

Amy F
4:36
Thank you Molly
AvatarHaaroon
4:36
@Guest, it would become AAB from A*AA for Engineering
AvatarMolly
4:36
@Anon - this is a great question. Do you mean specifically for RfE or for life in general?! I think a blended approach will certainly be the case for quite some time - lots of our academic departments here at Leeds are finding that it's much easier to book external speakers with them being online, and I think they're looking to continue this if they can, so I think this will apply to a lot more things in future too
AvatarMatthew
4:36
The best way to answer that is by looking in the student programme description @R.B as this was written by the person leading the session!

Accommodation wise, up to how many people could be sharing one living quarters? Is it cheaper to live with other people or more expensive?
