Are there any facilities to support mental health issues or advice at the University of Leeds?
AvatarHaaroon
4:25
@Guest, entry requirements vary from university to university, so please check with any you are interested in. You don't Chemistry to study Medicine at Leeds, but if you don't have Chemistry you need Biology and Physics or Maths
Safia

What alternative degree options do you recommend to medicine? And what options are there for someone not studying chemistry interested in medicine? Thankyou
AvatarJames Leslie
4:26
@Kalbir - Hudds have 2 programmes but they start in Year 12, Sheffield have a year 13 programme (Access Sheffield)

I’ve heard about the option of a gap year, but never been told how to go about taking one if I wanted to. Would our colleges aid our UCAS application a year after leaving them in the same way they do in year 13?
AvatarHaaroon
4:27
@Safia, at Leeds you could still study Medicine if you didn't have Chemistry. You would Biology and Physics or Maths. In terms of alternative courses to medicine, it really depends on what you would like to do. There are a range of healthcare degree courses
AvatarJames Leslie
4:27
@Abigail - you would apply to uni in Year 13 and tick a box on your form that says you are having a Gap Year :)
Abigail S
4:27
Oh okay thank you!
AvatarMolly
4:28
@Abigail - absolutely. We have our student advice centre in the heart of the Student Union, and hundreds of students access this service to get advice from trained staff about a number of different issues - accommodation, academic achievement, friends and relationships, mental health and loads more. We also have a dedicated student counselling service that is accessed by many of our students - they have same day appointments for those who need them, or ones that you have to wait for if you are able. Both really great services that provide a lot of specialised help to our students every day!

what gets you UCAS points?

Do you know if the RFE summer camp is going to be digital or in person? Thank you!
hello! I'm thinking about doing the Leeds uni 'gateway to medicine' course as I fit the criteria and I was just wondering how the grade boundaries work to make you eligible for the course? Thank you!
AvatarMolly
4:29
@Vicky - tariff points are another way of assessing your A Level or equivalent qualifications. UCAS have a converter here: UCAS Tariff Points - Calculate Your Entry Requirements

When you're at Uni, if there is something you are struggling to understand, are there people to ask for help? Or do you just have to figure it out yourself?
AvatarHaaroon
4:32
@Javine, you need BBC at A-level including Chemistry or Biology at B grade. Physics or Maths must also be offered if Chemistry is not taken. In terms of grade boundaries, if you are predicted ABB or greater you need to apply for our A100 Medicine course. Further info can be found here: https://courses.leeds.ac.uk/i900/gateway-year-to-medicine-mbchb#sectio...
AvatarMolly
4:33
@Annabel - absolutely! Every student at Leeds gets a personal tutor that they meet with a few times a year to discuss their progress, but they are also available throughout the year if you need them. Seminar tutors and lecturers are also super approachable if you need help with a particular assignment or piece of work, you can either email or attend one of their weekly office hours to discuss things with them in person. Most (if not all!) unis will have very similar systems - you are expected to be more independent at uni, but that doesn't mean you're totally on your own!

If you want to do medicine, is it possible that we choose all 5 courses with medicine on our personal statement, or does it have to be different?  If yes, then would it have to be completely different courses?
AvatarJames Leslie
4:33
@Javine - in a normal year we would have opened up applications by now for Summer School but we have waited to see what was happening in the world to try and deliver the best possible experience. Although we now have the roadmap it is still uncertain whether everything will go to plan (fingers crossed) - we are now working with our Health & Safety teams to see what is possible this summer but we have lots of unknowns with the pandemic. We are planning to let you all know how summer school will work at the start of June after we have delivered May Half term events with you all (which will be online) but it is looking like our summer experience will be virtual. We are now hoping that by the time you all start Year 13 in September and with the roadmap that we will finally be able to welcome you onto campus for events and we can ditch the laptops and let you see the facilities and the people you have been working with since January for yourselves :)

Does extra curricular activities help out while applying to competetive subjects like:Medicine

If you don’t meet the entry requirements would an EPQ be taken into consideration to get onto a specific course?

Thank you
AvatarHaaroon
4:35
@Ishmal, if applying for Medicine you apply for 4 Medicine courses and your fifth choice would be something Healthcare related. You cannot use all your choices to apply for Medicine
AvatarJames Leslie
4:35
@Simran - potentially, you would be able to check by looking at the course entry requirements in detail as it will vary from subject to subject :)

I don't understand, which 4 medicine courses
AvatarMolly

Hi @Guest - UCAS isn't actually open yet for 2022 entry, it opens on the 18th May. Your school/college will need to provide you with a buzzword for setting up your account so that it's all linked together, so once they do this you'll be able to get to work. I'd say it's a little early to be writing your statement just yet - most students will start work on this over the summer holiday.

How do you know if a specific degree is the one? Are there any subject masterclasses for any specific degrees online to get a taste of what the degree would entail?

Is there any way too learn extra things not related to your course because I want to learn about handling money/finances but it’s not related to the course I want to study.
AvatarHaaroon
4:37
@Ishmal, you would apply for the course A100 on UCAS at 4 different universities
AvatarJames Leslie
4:38
@Chloe - i would recommend attending our finance and budgeting sessions on RfE but there's also a fantastic website called Barclays Lifeskills that you can access via google

@Haaroon Thank you! how about if you're predicted an ABC would you still be able to apply for 'gateway to medicine'? Also if you apply for this course and get  ABB or higher in your real A-Level exam, what would happen?
AvatarMolly
4:39
@Simran - it can be super tricky! Open days are usually the best way to find out what each course is like - ours are online this year but they still run a huge amount of live events and take lots of questions from prospective students. They would be my first recommendation to find out what a course is like. We will also be running an event in our Spring Bank events at the beginning of next month that allows you to speak to current undergraduates about their experiences, so I'd recommend that one as well!

after having a look from whats taught on a specific degree on leeds uni website, where do you recommend to go to find more detailed information on what the course covers?
AvatarHaaroon

@Javine, you're best contacting our Medicine undergraduate admissions team on this email: ugmadmissions@leeds.ac.uk who can answer the really specific questions about this course
