Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 10/29/24

What does a move for Sonny Gray look like for the O's? Seems like the contract escalating and him being another year older should downplay the return a bit, unless the cards eat some cash.
Darragh McDonald
3:51
Yeah, the deal was backloaded. He only made 10MM this year but then it goes up to 25 and 35, with a 5MM buyout on a 30MM club option.
So the trade value right now is negative, meaning they would have to eat money to get anything of note.

I love your podcast! Do you think Bmore sticks with Holliday at 2b or is he a trade chip?
Darragh McDonald
3:52
Thanks!
I'd be shocked if they gave up on him now. He's still not even 21 years old.

Is Bieber healthy enough to count on? I thought his TJS would be a mid season type thing.
Darragh McDonald
3:53
He had TJS in April so it's possible he's back by June or something like that.
Corbin Burnes
3:54
Soto aside, do I get the biggest FA contract?
Darragh McDonald
3:54
I think so, yeah.
McFly
3:55
Did you expect the Yanks to be so docile in the WS?
Darragh McDonald
3:55
Any team can look bad in a three-game stretch.
Skip Schumaker

Where am I managing next year?
Darragh McDonald
3:55
Doesn't seem like he'll get a managerial job. There are only two vacancies right now: the White Sox and Marlins.
He just left the Marlins and is reportedly out of the running for the Sox.
3:56
If he wants to coach next year, I
Oops.
I'm sure he'll have offers and could do the interview circuit again a year from now.

Do you think Detroit works out a long-term deal with Tarik Skubal or do they just enjoy his last two years of control before he becomes a free agent?
Darragh McDonald
3:57
He's a Boras guy, so I'd vote against a long-term deal.
Boras guys do sign extensions sometimes, but it's rare.

Give me a good same game parlay for tonight's game.
Darragh McDonald
3:58
You don't want my advice. I'm real bad at betting.

Does Brent Rooker remain an Athletic?
Darragh McDonald
3:58
I'd guess so. If they wanted to deal him, they should have done it at the deadline.
3:59
They have essentially no money on the books, so they don't need to move him for financial reasons.

Competition for Corbin Burnes will be fierce IMHO. LAD, NYM, NYY, BOS, HOU, SF, WASH maybe and more. Probably not AZ. Your Thoughts Please?
Darragh McDonald
3:59
I doubt Houston will be in on him. Dana Brown said they will need to be "creative" with the budget this winter.
4:00
But the others are all possible, sure.

Thanks for stepping in on short notice. How much prep do you guys do before running one of these Q&As?
Darragh McDonald
4:02
These days, with the chat link going out in the Opener, I think Steve looks at them throughout the day and thinks about his answers before launching into it. But he's usually covering the news as well, so it would depend how busy he is with writing up waiver claims or signings or whatever.
Hipolito Pichardo

Assuming the Cubs use their prospect pool to bolster the rotation, who is realistically available outside of Crochet
Darragh McDonald
4:03
We are going to be publishing a list of top trade candidates once the WS is over, but some plausible SPs are Jesus Luzardo, Sonny Gray, Fedde, Montgomery and more.

What is taking Buster Posey so long to find a GM? I know he is diligent by nature, but the off-season could be starting tomorrow.
Darragh McDonald
4:04
Lots of teams don't have a GM. I don't think it's a big deal.
Front offices consist of dozens of people with titles that are all sort of meaningless.
4:05
Assistant GM, vice-president of player acquisitions, whatever.
Grimace
4:05
Think the Mets make a move for Sonny Gray?
