Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 12/26/17

He's never done it before (or even close to it), and last year only 15 SPs tossed 200 innings. I wouldn't hold your breath.
Work-related phone call, sorry for the multiple interruptions in this chat.

Why Napoli and not A-Gon?
Steve Adams
4:34
Napoli still showed power, is revered for his clubhouse presence, hits right-handed which fits their roster better.
4:35
Frankly, after 2017, I'm not sure why so many people seem keen on their team signing Gonzalez. "Degenerative back condition" in a 36-year-old 1B/DH that was limited to 275ish PAs doesn't pique my interest much

Logan Morrison gout to have a job in 2018 or us he another Chris Carter?
Steve Adams
4:36
LoMo is way better than Chris Carter. He'll sign somewhere -- probably for multiple years still. At a certain point, AL clubs without a set DH will jump into that mix and shuffle him between 1B/DH, I'd imagine. Plus the few remaining teams with an actual 1B opening all still make sense.

How about Jed Lowrie to Braves for insurance on that young infield?
Steve Adams
4:37
I don't really like the idea of the Braves giving up any sort of prospect for a one-year rental.
White Sox
4:39
Any major moves, or just 1-year reclamation projects that can hopefully be flipped at the deadline (i.e. Swarzak last year)?
Steve Adams
4:40
I don't think they'll do anything too big. The Castillo deal seems like it'll be their biggest signing unless they can line up something that aligns with their competitive window -- convince the Marlins to part with Yelich, for instance.

Do you know of any free agents that are leaning toward retirement? Who do you think will retire if they're not signed by opening day?
Steve Adams
4:42
R.A. Dickey has basically said there only like 3 teams he'll pitch for, as he wants to be close to his Nashville home. I'd imagine a lot of older guys will consider it if they don't get a decent MLB offer -- Bautista, Grandy, Colon, Grilli, etc... some may just not want to sign a minor league deal if that's the best option.

Do you think there is any chance of J.D. Martinez taking a big but back-loaded contract?  It seems the Sox don't have the kind of room to avoid the second luxury tax threshold ($237M) unless they can get the first year for a lower rate and pay for it later.
Steve Adams
4:43
The luxury tax is calculated based on average annual value, not present-day payroll.
JDM could sign for 8/200 and agree to a $1MM salary in 2018, and it'd still count as a $25MM luxury tax hit.

All things considered, is this the worst offseason you can ever remember? Excruciatingly boring.
Steve Adams
4:46
Nah -- Stanton trade, Ohtani-mania, there've been some fun things here and there. The 2009-10 offseason was a trainwreck. We had Matt Holliday, John Lackey and Jason Bay atop our free agent rankings, and it was rubbish beyond. Randy Wolf was in the top 10! (Albeit on the heels of a very good year)

Are GMs colluding to not overspend this year to try and control the costs of next year's free agents?
Steve Adams
4:47
I think teams are just generally more patient and generally more wary of exceeding the luxury tax now that the penalties have increased. I also think there's more of a sense among data-driven front offices that a guy's value is what it is, and there's no sense in getting into a bidding war that'll take his price well beyond that point.
That may not have been the case in recent years.

This offseason is so boring that I'm following a Steve Adams chat.
Steve Adams
4:48
This may or may not be Jeff. I truly don't know.
I'm guessing it is.

Interesting idea here, trade for Machado, then trade Trevor Story to recoup some cost. Get a draft pick in 2018. And Brendan Rogers takes over after Machado?
Steve Adams
4:49
I like the idea of Machado in Colorado, but I don't think they're going to pony up from the Marquez/Gray/Freeland group in which the O's would express interest.

Greg Bird will make a foooool of you! He's poppin 40!
Steve Adams
4:50
Greg Bird could hit 40 homers and still not be as good as Bellinger, who walked at a 12 percent clip and also played quality outfield defense in addition to solid work at first base.

It seems like the Abreu talk is all but over. Is it safe to assume he’s staying?  What about Garcia?
Steve Adams
4:51
Seems like the ChiSox are likely to hang onto him. I can't see anyone paying a huge price for Avi and his .390 BABIP

4:51
Hi Steve, can you beat Charlie Adams 1-1 in basketball? Also, do you think the Twins make another upper level bullpen move after Duke and Rodney?
Steve Adams
4:54
Watching a game of 1-on-1 between my younger brother, he of former HoopsRumors.com fame, would be an amazing exhibition of clumsiness, awkwardness, and putrid ball-handling/shooting.

I think I'd win though.

I also think the Twins have room for more 'pen additions, yeah. They have tons of intriguing young options but few have really solidified themselves. I think they could add another righty option and still fit in Hildenberger, Pressly, Duffey and Busenitz on Opening Day, with other young arms forcing the issue as the season goes on

Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? What do you see the Brewers doing the rest of the offseason?
Steve Adams
4:54
Of COURSE it is.
4:55
Brewers could still add to the bullpen, and I think there's still an easy spot to upgrade at second bas.
base, even.

Have you ever played Strat-O-Matic Baseball?

Grew up on it.
