Maybe! I do think they try to protect their draft picks next year to have all the ammunition to trade up for a top tier quarterback. But I do think they would like an earlier (or at least an additional) pick on the second day of the draft!

Which RB’s 3rd Rnd & after do you feel are likely targets for the Steelers?
Christopher Carter
1:54
I think both the Ohio State RBs are too high for that. But I think Dylan Sampson, Damien Martinez, DJ Giddens and RJ Harvey are all really good targets.

Chris, the national pundits all predict the Steelers will take a QB, while the local journalists believe a Defensive Lineman will be taken in the first round. Are you more plugged in, or just more logical?
Christopher Carter
1:59
I'd say the plugged in is part of being logical. Pay attention to what's been done closer, which is the advantage we have as local reporters. We can mull over information, tempers, and know things that national reporters don't have time to deal with because they're dealing with the entire league.

Thanks for your answers to my questions.  Drafting a QB is harder than ever because most college teams don’t run pro style offenses.  The QB in many cases are only told to make one read and then check down or run.  In many cases, they don’t have to go through their progressions.  NFL defenses are WAY more complex, plus the speed of the game is so much faster.  Am I missing anything?
Christopher Carter
2:01
No problem! And I'd say you're spot on! Everything is bigger, faster and more complex, and that has a bigger impact on QB than any other position.

Who do you think the backup QB would be if AR doesn't sign and they go with Mason as the starter?
Christopher Carter
2:01
Whichever rookie they draft. I like Will Howard for that role. Maybe they use the third round pick on the position and get Tyler Shough.
TX Pressure
2:01
Cmon Chris this drafting is easy!  I was on nfldraftbuzz.com draft simulator and moved down four times and picked up Nolen, Egbuka, and Harmon at the top of the 2nd!
Christopher Carter
2:02
TX you got it man. I have never pulled a haul like that. Somebody get this guy a job in a front office.
TX Pressure
2:02
Fans assume Steelers will always have winning record, this year I don't see it.  Think they are prime for a down season but also prime for a top pick next year.  Do you think the FO and Khan are drafting this year to prepare for next year and the QB class next year?
Christopher Carter
2:03
I do think this year is setting up to be challenging to get there. I do think all the moves being made are setting up for them to be able to swing big at QB next year.

Didn’t the Steelers cut Ogunjobi?
Christopher Carter
2:04
Yep! Saved decent cap space too.
TX Pressure
2:04
I think more emphasis needs to be on the O line, don't know yet what we have in Jones and Fautanu off major injury.  Need to draft an OT by Day 2, not just for this year but to prepare for next year.  This line does not have much depth.
Christopher Carter
2:05
No space to get OT day 2. But a Logan Brown type on day 3? Sign me up. Be on the lookout for a day 2 guard though.

Hey Chris - how about this for a scenario? Sanders as QB in this draft. When MT's contract is up, Deon takes over as coach. Steelers would certainly be entertaining!
Christopher Carter
2:06
Didn't Sanders just sign some super contract to be at Colorado? I don't put it past Deion to make moves, but I don't think this would be it. Also don't think they want Sanders at QB in the first.

Thanks for the chat CC! After reviewing the Best and Worst case scenario mock drafts published here recently, which does your crystal ball tell you is more likely?
Christopher Carter
2:07
Of course! I always try to fall somewhere in between those. I do think they will have 2 of the 3 DTs they need available to them. So I guess I'd lean more to the best case.

Do you believe Aaron Rodgers signing with Steelers or retiring has any effect on their draft strategy?
Christopher Carter
2:08
Just got done listening to him on Pat McAfee. I think he signs with the Steelers. Sounds like he's got a lot going on and he's been upfront about it. As long as he's healthy and knows he's got a starting spot, I think he'll play.
NY Steel

What is Pickens’ trade value? I think something between pick 60 and 80.
Christopher Carter
2:10
That's tough. He hasn't blown up yet but has top 5 WR potential. But he's on the last year of his deal. So, I'd say, closer to 80, maybe even later. I've gotten the sense they won't be trading him unless it's for a mid-to-high second at the lowest.
NY Steel
2:11
What would a trade down to the high 20’s net the Steelers? A 3rd rounder?
Christopher Carter
2:11
That's about the compensation I see fitting.
NY Steel
2:11
How do you rank the QBs going into the draft?
Christopher Carter
2:11
1st RD: Ward
2nd RD: Sanders
3rd RD: Milroe
4th RD: Shough, Howard, Dart
Aces High
2:12
If Grant and Harmon are gone at 21, would you try to trade back, reach for a QB, or go WR or DB with the pick?
Christopher Carter
2:12
Depends on the WR/DB there. If Matthew Golden, Will Johnson or Jahdae Barron are there, I'm taking one of them. If none are there, I don't care about these quarterbacks. Trade back.
NY Steel
2:12
Why did the drafting with Tomlin and Colbert become so average in Colbert’s last decade?
Christopher Carter
2:14
My theory is when you look at the picks they made, they began to go away from BPA and more for team specific need. Artie Burns was a very aggressive play to fill the biggest need on the team at cornerback, as was Terrell Edmunds at safety. Neither were valued there. Throw in a Devin Bush injury, Najee Harris and Kenny Pickett and you've got 6/8 drafts with first rounders who didn't become franchise players. Normally, that dooms a franchise.

For Sanders, isn't accuracy, intelligence, and pocket presence and calm under pressure the most important thing?  They say he can make all of the throws in NFL.  If he is sitting at 21, that has to be a consideration?
Christopher Carter
2:15
Accuracy, for sure. But part of what I think he will struggle with is the NFL levels of pressure, timing and speed. Many of Sanders' best moments are sandbox types of plays that won't fly as much in the NFL. I just think the talent he brings to the table won't allow him to do that as much since he doesn't have elite arm strength, size or speed.

Chris, team could go in many directions this year's draft, how many starters do they need to get out of a draft for it to be considered a success?
Christopher Carter
2:16
It always varies. This year, I'd say 2 considering their picks. In general, you'd like 3.

Hi Chris, I think the Steelers should double dip at DT with this deep class.  My hope is Harmon and then a big, 2-down NT type in the mid rounds.  If they were to select Grant instead, what type of DL would make sense on Day 3?
Christopher Carter
2:17
Agreed! Honestly, look at Derrick Harmon's teammate Jamaree Caldwell. Good fit as a run stuffer. If they go Grant, get a pass rusher. My latest mock for the PG had them taking Ty Robinson out of Nebraska in the 7th. He has the second most pressures of an interior DL behind Harmon.

how likely is a double dip at DL? They seem to be doing a lot of homework on guys like Jj pegues
