No, he only gets the deferrals for years he is under contract. If he opts out after year three, he gets $30 million in deferred money, not $70 million.

Schwarber for Miller? Something like that? Soler for Chapman?
Dave Cameron
12:42
I don't think the Cubs would do Schwarber for Miller straight up, but those are pieces that would make more sense for the other team than their current one.
Might take a bigger deal to make it work, but framework makes some sense.

I know it's still far away, but with the lack of free agents In 2017 besides Bautista and encarnacion, what are the odds cespedes opts out for a much bigger payday? His walk rate is much higher and he is showing last years surge wasn't a fluke
Dave Cameron
12:42
He's opting out unless he blows out a knee or fails a drug test.

You've written a lot of dumb articles, but the one about trading Trout takes the cake.
Dave Cameron
12:43
Thanks!
Jeff
12:44
But if you don't include a young star player, why would the Angels accept the trade?
Dave Cameron
12:44
Because baseball is about putting a good team on the field, not having the best one young player you can get.

Scale of 1-10...how disappointed would you be if your kid grows up to hate baseball?
Dave Cameron
12:46
1. I am not much like my Dad in terms of interests, so I don't have much of the perspective that he has to like what I like. If he is happy listening to classic music and painting rose petals, more power to him.

Thoughts RE: Yordano Ventura? Long term is he just a rich man's Eovaldi?
Dave Cameron
12:48
I think he's better than Eovaldi, but he looks like a mid-rotation starter to me, and that's with the premium stuff. When it degrades, he might lose value fast.

Are you dreading the 9AM chat start when you move?
Dave Cameron
12:49
No, I'm actually looking forward to the ability to shift my schedule, get up earlier, and spend most of my awake time in daylight hours.

How will these recent contracts (scherzer, Strasburg) with the deferred payments after the contracts expire impact their finances to acquire talent down the line?
Dave Cameron
12:50
My guess is the Lerners are planning on selling the franchise at some point, and are hopeful that they won't be around for the deferred payment years.
Nelson
12:51
So are there only 3 teams that can afford to sign Harper? Most owners including Ted Lerner (5 billion) are billionaires. You dont think one will want to make a splash?
Dave Cameron
12:51
These guys aren't going to spend their personal fortune on their baseball teams; they run them as businesses, with budgets based on revenues and expenses.
Brett W
12:52
Why would the Yankees want to trade Miller?
Dave Cameron
12:52
If they don't bounce back in a few months, he'll have more value to a contender than he would to them.
Jonny
12:54
In light of the lack of pitching available at the end of this year, what does Matt Harvey's value look like, assuming he gets right and looks more like his 2015 version? A return like the Braves got for Shelby Miller possible?
Dave Cameron
12:54
The Shelby Miller trade was lunacy. No one is going to be in a rush to re-do that mistake.
Greg

Dave Hypothetical question, if a team were to acquire Scherzer in a trade. Would the Nationals still be responsible for the deferred money or is that something that would have to be worked out in the trade?
Dave Cameron
12:56
The deferred money accrues just like normal salary, so the Nationals would be responsible for the deferred money for the time he played for them, and the new team would be responsible for it for the remainder of the contract.

Hey Dave - How legit is Nick Castellanos? Obviously he can't keep running a .450 BABIP, but to my eyes the approach does seem improved and the quality of contact has been undeniable (as compared to past seasons). And the defense might not be execrable!
Dave Cameron
12:57
With his plate discipline, he needed the power spike to be a viable big league hitter. If he keeps the ISO over .200, he can be a nice piece.

What's your favorite bad prediction? Me, I was convinced Jon Lester would never make it.
Dave Cameron

I thought Andy Marte was going to be a superstar.

My wife and I are considering going to a fee-only financial planner to make sure we’re handling our finances smartly. It seems like the services we want will cost around $3K, which is a little more than we were expecting. We are doing most of the things on Harold Pollack’s index card, but we definitely need help with life insurance/estate planning and saving for our newborn daughter’s college. Do you think seeing a professional is worth it?
Dave Cameron
12:59
Don't spend $3k. My wife and I spent $950 for our time with a fee-only FA. I live in a lower cost in living area, so I'm guessing it's going to be more elsewhere, but it shouldn't be 3x. If it is, just spend $500 on plane tickets and fly to NC, use the cheaper ones here, and get a free vacation while you're at it.

Yes, but those deferred payments due would factor in the price they could receive for the franchise, no?
Dave Cameron
1:02
To a small extent, yes. New owners will look at the debts the franchise has, but when we're talking a few hundred million owed to players on interest-free deferrals, it's going to be a small factor. Teams are valued in the billions now, so owners won't walk away over $100M in future payment commitments.

Could the Shelby Miller trade have started out much worse for the Snakes?
Dave Cameron
1:03
Shelby Miller could have been exposed as the secret head of ISIS, I guess.

Just for reference, is it worth submitting questions after 12:30, or is the queue too full?
Dave Cameron

I looked at every question submitted today. Can't answer them all, of course, but I do try to make sure to not just answer the early submissions.
Thanks for hanging out today, everyone.
