If it were 2005, would Joey Gallo be a more prized player?
Dave Cameron
12:32
I don't know. Russ Branyan wasn't all that prized.

Mike Trout is the clear cut best player in baseball. Who's the second best? If Kershaw, than who is the second best position player?
Dave Cameron
12:32
Probably Machado or Donaldson.
12:33
Bryant is in there too.
It's a third baseman, is what I'm saying.

Anyone put off by Dave's snark should give FanGraphs audio a shot. For some reason his brand of mechanical, logic-driven, social ineptitude is actually charming when you hear it out loud.

Thanks?

If the Cards were to trade Reyes, how much would his value take a hit from the injury and lost time?
Dave Cameron
12:35
You're talking about a year and a half of lost production, and the risk that he doesn't come back at all, since not every TJ guy successfully rehabs. I'd probably guess he's lost something like 40% of his value.

What do definite starting players think about spring training? Do they relish every chance to tune up before the season, or do they just want to escape without injury? Totally dependent on the player?
Dave Cameron
12:36
I think 98% of players agree spring training is too long.
And not that useful.

I have always preferred known quantities vs projections so was all for Quintana for Reyes when those rumors were floated. Easy to say no in retrospect but what are your thoughts on proven players vs prospects?
Dave Cameron
12:37
There is no such thing as a known quantity.
Every player has risk. You simply are weighing the risks and rewards of every player.

Are you taking the over or under on the .272/.350/.515 Steamer projection for Eric Thames - 2.3 WAR (!!!)?
Dave Cameron
12:38
Under a bit, but not a lot.
ryan
12:38
if the Oriole's suck in the first half, what are the chances they trade Machado?
Dave Cameron
12:39
Those are the kinds of deals that usually happen in the offseason, in part because an acquiring team would want to try and get an extension done.
Or at least find out the price.

Come August, which team will be employing Jose Abreu?
Dave Cameron
12:40
He feels like a Ranger.

Miggy a HOF'er if he retired tomorrow?
Dave Cameron
12:40
No question.

Hey Dave, hope you feel better. Why is the WBC still a thing? I'd imagine most owners/front offices feel neutral to bad about it, since it increases risk of injury to players and detracts from Spring Training.
Dave Cameron
12:41
MLB has a real interest in developing the sport worldwide. The WBC is one of the best ways to do that.

More likely cause of your sickness -- exposure to toddler or exposure to tundra-like winter??
Dave Cameron
12:41
It's the kid. He's a disease factory. He goes to preschool, gets germy, comes home, smothers me with germs.
I've been mostly sick for the last two months. It's great. Kids are the best.

What do you think of MLB's process of hiring analysts through internships that turn into full-time offers? (Apparently this is how something like 75% of analysts get their jobs?) Do you agree that the practice reduces diversity of backgrounds (and therefore thought processes) in front offices? Is there competitive advantage to be had by offering better pay to analysts and thus attracting better, more diverse applicants?
Dave Cameron

I wrote about this in the 2014 THT Annual. It's a big problem. http://www.hardballtimes.com/classic-tht-annual/white-bred-major-league-baseballs-intern-issue/

Does Travis Sawchick have 2 months to live so he's writing the most awesome articles possible before he goes off into that good night? I mean seriously, he must be running a Trout-like WWAR (writer-WAR)
Dave Cameron
12:43
Travis has been fantastic. We couldn't be happier to have him.

Carsons attitude towards baseball is most similar to Dave's attitude towards ___________________ .
Dave Cameron

Snoop Dogg. (This will make sense when he posts the one we recorded yesterday.)

Sawchik is not a fan of adding the DH to the national league. Will he be fired this afternoon or did you know this about him and hired him anyway?
Dave Cameron
12:44
No one is perfect.

What position will Trea Turner be playing in three years?
Dave Cameron
